eva1984··on The STEM Crisis Is a Myth (2013)
But it is also very difficult to hire a qualified candidate. There is also data suggests that SDE's salary has been hiking for several years in a row and beyond inflation rate. If there is no shortage, how so?

https://www.fastcompany.com/3051405/the-future-of-work/the-2...

I don't think paying 110k+ in Bay Area for a entry level is unfair, but from what I can tell, my company has a hard time finding one candidate and often the ones we like also get multiple offers and prefer big companies like Google/Facebook, etc.

Yes, 'qualified' is very subjective standard, however, if you ask 5 experienced people, their opinion towards the same candidate barely changes dramatically from one and another, it is either unanimously yes/no, very rarely in between.

So, I think yes, there is a lot of STEM students, but how many of them actually have actual engineering skills is question left for debate.

eva1984··on Amazon soars to more than 341K employees, adding 110K people in a single year
And Trump will stop this, at some point, single day delivery will be banned.
eva1984··on Amazon soars to more than 341K employees, adding 110K people in a single year
Majority of them are in delivery.
eva1984··on How Immigration Uncertainty Threatens America’s Tech Dominance
> The U.S. owns the cloud with AWS, GCP, and Azure, but if other countries can't use their services due to US government overreach, then I'm sure strong competitors will pop up elsewhere.

This is a very good point. Add on to this, tech industry among some of the businesses that benefits most from an open global economy, and would hurt most from Trump's protectionism.

For example, Google has over 90% market share in certain european countries, and EU is viewing the new administration more and more as a threat, isn't that dangerous to have someone you don't trust control your entire internet industry? I believe both European governments/society will now be more motivated to push the agenda to grow local competitors that works better for them.

eva1984··on Silicon Valley is making plans to move foreign-born workers to Canada
Not attractive, and language problem.
eva1984··on Apple Reports Record First Quarter Results
They have updated for a while. The demand was accumulating before that. One time thing.
eva1984··on AI Beats Four Top Poker Players
> So the question is, how does an average joe hacker like me exploit and leverage this wonderful thing called deep learning? I'm not interested in reading PHD papers with advanced calculus.

Well reading paper is a must to get to deep learning. Those papers may not be that math heavy once you are used to it. Most of the time, it is about network architecture and loss objectives.

eva1984··on Billionaire Is Reported Seized from Hong Kong Hotel and Taken into China
Yes, this is in fact not news. And I don't think it has anything to do with Trump whatsoever
eva1984··on Welcome, ACLU
Free speech, not free from other people's disagreement. The color of your previous comment pretty much speaks for itself.
eva1984··on New H1-B Visa bill doubles the salary requirements to $130K/yr
I kinda of figure what you mean by 'barely-living', is actually worry free living style(good housing, close to workplace, go to decent places for dining/partying) in SF/NYC. And yes, 130k may knock the door for that standard, but not quite there.

But saying 130k is 'barely-living', if not bad wording, is close to insulting, and helps little in the conversation.

eva1984··on New H1-B Visa bill doubles the salary requirements to $130K/yr
It is not. I am lost of what 'barely living' here means.

130k is totally decent, however it is also not rare. For entry level job to big companies/good startups, the market price is between 110k-120k, and it usually takes 2 years or so to bump up your salary to 130k level(one raise is good enough), assuming you are a reasonable(above average but maybe not excellent) engineer.

So, no, I completely disagree with this 'barely living salary' bullshit, it makes us software engineers look like spoiled ungrateful whiny babies. Not GOOD!

eva1984··on Trump’s Next Move on Immigration to Hit Closer to Home for Tech
H1B needs reform no doubt. But I remain vigilant to see exactly how Trump administration is enforcing their agenda.

Worst case, I would go to another country or go back home, which will be hard in the beginning but will be fine over long term. As a decent and confident developer, it is not hard to find jobs around the world. There will be more opportunities for other countries if US fails to attract and retain the smart people from all over the world.

Stay strong and curious, people!

eva1984··on Ask HN: Is it ok that founders are taking to social media about politics?
You can post your opinion on social media to state you are not in line with your founder and he/she doesn't represent you.

If your company would fire you for this, then it means you and your company doesn't fit, in a mutual manner.

eva1984··on First they came for the Iranians
Saudi is a big buyer of US weapons. Considering how hard Trump tries to please and borrow influence from military, I doubt he is going to do anything about it.

Race and religion matters, if you are not in the league, you better make sure you have power or money, or something to offer. At least to me, that is what Trump believes.

eva1984··on Testing Ads in Facebook Messenger
Thx. But many of those are counting on ads too, like Twitter/Snapchat/Allo(maybe). I figure SMS might be my the only choice out there though.
eva1984··on Testing Ads in Facebook Messenger
Eww. Any replacement suggestion? Paid/subscription app is welcome, too.
eva1984··on Deep learning algorithm diagnoses skin cancer as well as seasoned dermatologists
It is related. When the diagnosis is much cheaper and doesn't require that much of a long wait, people will be much more tolerant towards it.

And I don't why you bring up the spokesperson stuff, it doesn't need to.

eva1984··on Deep learning algorithm diagnoses skin cancer as well as seasoned dermatologists
Cheaper, more cost effective for sure.
eva1984··on Show HN: Bitesnap – Deep Learning Meets Food Logging
How accurate does this predict...carbs? And how does it handle the different amount? Like different cup size?
eva1984··on Deep learning algorithm diagnoses skin cancer as well as seasoned dermatologists
> That said, the obvious concern would be the extreme cost of a false negative

Probably not. People won't go to doctor unless they sense something wrong with their body. So it is actually filling the void here.

On the other hand, false positives will cause a bigger problem, because swarm of people will get triggered by the fear of cancer, and hospital might not handle the sudden surge of traffic for treatment.

eva1984··on Deep learning algorithm diagnoses skin cancer as well as seasoned dermatologists
Well, with DL powered algorithm/device, people can pretty much practice self-diagnosis, and only under circumstances, where the model is predicting a higher risk, they can go to clinic to get the human treatment.

Overall AI will ease the demand for human doctors, maybe not overnight, but gradually yet quickly. Cheaper healthcare for all, thinner salary for doctors, I will say not a bad deal overall.

eva1984··on US pulls out of Trans-Pacific Partnership
Which is how it should be. Why a trade deal whose members are mostly Asian countries, excluded the largest economy in that area, and who in fact being the biggest trade partners of those countries? China should be in the center of such deal, not being excluded from it.
eva1984··on US pulls out of Trans-Pacific Partnership
Which might not be true. If the deal doesn't benefit the country, guess what will happen? Just don't sign it. Most of the TPP countries didn't have a bilateral agreement with US at this moment, so it is the status quo.

And since Trump's government is backtracking to protectionism, manufacturing jobs will less likely be delegated to countries like Vietnam, and countries like Japan doesn't have its back from US to confront China(Abe must be scratching his head right now, lol), I think it is much less appealing for those countries to hand over domestic control over regulations in exchange for something lesser.

eva1984··on San Francisco Asks: Where Have All the Children Gone?
Same. This is precisely the wrong way to approach equality: make everyone equally poor. Education is to educate people, why would SF's authority feel the need to regulate what and how much amount people should be educated?

This feels so authoritarian for a city that is branded for liberalism.

eva1984··on The declining authority of statistics and the experts who analyse them
Statistics never changes, what changes is the people who interprets them. So if there is anything to blame, elites should blame themselves because people don't want to believe their interpretation anymore.
eva1984··on Uber Hires Former Google Search Chief Amit Singhal as SVP of Engineering
I don't think this is going to change anything though. He is just one person.
eva1984··on WeChat's App Revolution
TL;DR, the mini program is basically WeChat's own chrome web store, web app with proprietary API to interact with WeChat.

Didn't know why this is hyped so much, and there is nothing revolutionary about this. It makes the Chinese internet even more becoming WeChat's own walled garden.

eva1984··on PyTorch – Tensors and Dynamic neural networks in Python
No, there is already no escaping from CUDA, so it is already a monoculture nevertheless.
eva1984··on U.S. sues Oracle, alleges salary and hiring discrimination
Too early to call. Let the court decide. Point is, the outcome will be significant. If Oracle wins, the diversity initiative that some mainstream media are pressuring to tech companies will take a blow.

On the reverse side, an ethnic quota system is likely to be adapted by other large tech companies in order to avoid lawsuits.

eva1984··on U.S. sues Oracle, alleges salary and hiring discrimination
I mean the accusation itself. Whether it is true or not, we will have to see. It is going to be very interesting.
