And you highlight probably the biggest issue with indiegogo's approach. Keeping money tied up while waiting for the project is pretty bad.
etherealG··on Datomic Pro Starter Edition
valuable software isn't always easy and quick to pick up. simple things can be difficult to familiarise yourself with.

learning the value of functional style took ages for me to grok, but it's been one of the biggest values ever.

i find it a little ironic considering one of the first and best talks i've seen from hickey is 'simple made easy'. you'd likely learn a lot from a watch of that, or perhaps more detail about datomic in any of the talks on datomic.

etherealG··on Baretorrent: minimalist open-source Bittorrent client
Thank you so much. I've been looking for this exact thing for years, but never had the time to make it myself.
etherealG··on C--
it mentions c-- as a scripting language, i'd guess they're different things.
etherealG··on Apple Just Cannibalized the MacBook Air
ah, i see, didn't realise the inbetween scaling was blurry. on the 15 i find the inbetween scaling pretty good myself.
etherealG··on Apple Just Cannibalized the MacBook Air
huh? the pro has more pixels, and you can scale the ui up/down as you prefer. i'm pretty sure you get way more effective screen space at the highest density setting.
etherealG··on What happens when a language has no numbers?
In science approximation is so common there's a required notation for experimental measurement for it. Perhaps they're just accept that sooner than us.
etherealG··on A negative captcha
that's true, but this form of captcha is more user friendly, as the user isn't even aware it's there.
etherealG··on A negative captcha
been doing this for years, the way we handle it is to hide the element via javascript. then most screen readers won't "see" it, but generic form bots aren't that smart.
etherealG··on A negative captcha
the first rule of negative captcha is...

been doing this for years, works wonderfully.

etherealG··on Wikipedia Will Fail in Four Years (2006)
why not report him to the wider wiki community. it seems prudent to crack down on this kind of behaviour for all our benefit.
etherealG··on H2 {position: sticky} [video]
mind explaining what you mean by behavioral markup?
etherealG··on H2 {position: sticky} [video]
i think the correct fix for this is for the browser to realise that some of the height is obscured by position:fixed elements, and only scroll the rest of the height on a page-down keypress. a javascript version of the same wouldn't be possible, so yes, this can help. whether it's implemented like that yet i'm not sure, perhaps open a bug with webkit / gecko if not.
etherealG··on How I Make A Living Using GameMaker
sorry but i disagree, gunpoint is brilliantly fun.
etherealG··on [dead]
sorry to say, and maybe i'm the exception, but my marriage seems to have more fire 5 years in than when it started. every day i feel more.

i'll count myself lucky i guess.

etherealG··on Should you build it if nobody comes?
i try to either get paid to build something, or build something i personally need. either way, i get something out of it :)
etherealG··on Doing Good in the Addiction Economy
i think you miss the point of advertising something as addictive. it can have a positive spin. addiction can be understood as something so enjoyable you would want to continue to do it as a regular activity. if that thing isn't bad for you, then it's a good thing that it's addictive.

if i told you excercise was addictive as a selling point, would you say that people shouldn't exercise because it is addictive? i think it's clear that addictive activities aren't necessarily bad just cause they are addictive.

people should focus on the positive impact an activity has. if it's strongly positive, then addiction to it isn't bad at all.

etherealG··on Hacker News: Best
how does best differ from the homepage? not sure i get it.
etherealG··on Reading Other People's Code (2012)
"Only thing you can be sure of is the source." not sure that's even true: http://cm.bell-labs.com/who/ken/trust.html
etherealG··on What's That Programming Language?
wow, that's quite hard :)
etherealG··on Ghetto Tracker - A rating system to help people avoid the bad parts of town
not sure this is the best idea. often people's idea of a bad area doesn't reflect the truth. what about using police data instead?
etherealG··on Show HN: From hack day to Minority Report style browsing in two weeks [video]
not that i think the leap has this method of input just right yet, but the extra dimension of movement definitely should allow a lot more complex interaction with just 1 hand theoretically. i think that at least answers why you would want such a thing.
etherealG··on Nidium – A new browser engine
is this any different from what mozilla are doing already with their open source engine? why separate yourself from that? is your code available? if not why not?
etherealG··on Dark Patterns - User Interfaces Designed to Trick People
i don't think so, there's no real malicious intent there. perhaps you should consider why you don't get more signups after a demo instead, i would expect more. maybe it's a good thing to get less signups with the demo button where it was, because signups that don't actually use the service are basically the same as a demo anyway.
etherealG··on Pressy: the one-button Android controller
custom actions like this for your hardware buttons should work with the existing buttons without the need for the hack. holding power on with some custom roms can be configured to have the flashlight on while it's held.

would be nice if an api for these buttons existed in the android sdk. anyone know if it's there?

etherealG··on 0 to 60 in One Second: Fusing WebGL, CSS 3D and HTML
how did you get that view on the page? mine seems to be off screen on load and scrolling up doesn't have the same nice pan.
etherealG··on 0 to 60 in One Second: Fusing WebGL, CSS 3D and HTML
i feel your pain. wish more companies had the foresight to use webgl, and focus on proper graphics coders not just 'html5' when all they really mean is gradients and rounded corners.
etherealG··on Discovering Sketch
is there no form of bitmap editing at all?
etherealG··on How the Robots Lost: High-Frequency Trading's Rise and Fall
in your example you left out the person that paid for the lemonade. they lost. i think in an idealistic value system, all value is exchanged not created, a lot like energy in physics. not that i'm saying that's a good model for economics, but it's a valid high level thought, and one i think the original poster might have in mind.
etherealG··on Andrew Ng and the Quest for the New AI
thanks very much for pointing this out, joined the class now, hope i can catch up
