etherealG··on Perl code that is syntactically correct only on Fridays
One realises that one’s time is relative anyway and any universal time is just one’s own will to join a collective agreement that one doesn’t have to abide by. Then one puts this notion aside and prefers not to worry oneself with such things.
etherealG··on Hoax email blast abused poor coding in FBI website
and now you just described every dev ever becoming more of a lawyer than a dev. why would we want that?
etherealG··on Willingness to look stupid
Actually data shows that adults are way better at learning languages than children. Children just have 100s of hours of doing nothing besides learning languages so they succeed faster in calendar time. If you spent all day every day learning a language you’d be way faster at it than your kids.
etherealG··on The FDA wants you to be able to buy a hearing aid without a prescription
I’ve spent hours trying to find a review of transparent mode on AirPods or any other similar transparency modes with regards to reducing wind noise amplification while still allowing sounds of cars etc. through. I’m looking for a good solution to listening to music while riding a bike that’s safe but better sound quality than bone conduction. Sadly I can’t find any objective measurement of these combinations of noise cancellation and pass through. I can’t even find a review that mentions if this is how pass through is meant to work vs just passing along all sounds. If the latter then wind noise pass through sounds like a good way to completely ruin your hearing. I guess these days all we can find is marketing and reviews that amount to puff pieces with rare exceptions.

Would you be willing to give a personal experience? Have you tried transparent mode in windy conditions?

etherealG··on Amazon Shuts Down NSO Group Infrastructure
I’m sad to see you being downvoted. I agree completely. Somehow the richest company in the world paying for this burden on us all is a bad idea :/
etherealG··on Tim Cook’s Fortnite trial testimony was unexpectedly revealing
I liked one of the answers in another thread, “did you go to the arcade as a kid?”. I think as children we enjoy fantasy and are more able to suspend belief to take part in it. Games almost all have some fantasy wrapped around the mechanics. A part of the fun is maintaining that fantasy. For many people, the exploitation loop costs little enough that they don’t mind paying it to maintain the fantasy and enjoy the game. If it’s below some threshold of acceptable spending for them, they still take pleasure in playing.

You could take money out of the equation, for an example like amateur chess. To get good you have to practice. Practice takes time. Time is finite. Why does some crazy good amateur haches player bother to I c’est so much time to get that good? For some arbitrary score on chess.com, but why? Because they enjoy it, even if it’s another hamster wheel.

etherealG··on Google Removed ClearURLs Extension from Chrome Web Store
Except remote code execution wasn’t the reason google claims to take the add on down... come on, it’s a clear conflict of interest, and they could have easily asked to remove remote code execution possibility instead.
etherealG··on Cookie Consent Speed Running Game
I disagree, every company on the top fines list has more money in proportion to the fine than the examples the parent comment gave, except maybe the bank. These fines are so tiny no one will ever care about user privacy or data security.
etherealG··on Cookie Consent Speed Running Game
I assume the contractual obligations have to be with the subject
etherealG··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
Is that easy to do? I thought WhatsApp didn’t allow api access.
etherealG··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
Sounds great! Let me know when you’ve built it so I can try it out :)
etherealG··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
I’d love to switch to telegram, but their default messages aren’t even end to end encrypted. And secure messages are not available for groups. So it’s not a great option for privacy actually.
etherealG··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
Exactly, the usage of iOS in some countries is high, and that’s where WhatsApp didn’t win as the most used chat.
etherealG··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
Thanks for the positive outlook among many negative ones :) I hope we can find a good alternative in the market. Anyone know of alternatives that allow end to end encryption with group chat support so far?
etherealG··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
Sadly the law is written in a way that let’s the optional part be disregarded if the business considers the data that’s being shared necessary to run its business model... and advertising companies like Facebook will argue all data can help them sell ads better or for more money, hence all sharing of data shouldn’t need to be optional. This has yet to be tested in court, but both google and Facebook have taken this approach in their implementation of gdpr, leaving us wondering what the point was anyway... law without teeth :( the eu should have already slapped down google hard for their lack of an opt out, but it’s been years and still nothing. Seems the law makers aren’t really on the side of privacy after all.
etherealG··on Slack is down
Actually that’s the same with slack, each slack server has a unique url too.
etherealG··on Google illegally spied on workers before firing them, US labor board alleges
It's only that way if you think of money and time as equivalent, which I assume from your tone you do. For many parents, time with their child during those early months is invaluable, and no money compensation can compare, so it's not really a viable option for them to "get theirs" while you don't "get yours". I think collective bargaining could solve this better by asking for an option to either have the cash or the time... but getting only cash is also saying to parents "fuck you, getting mine", just with the added "and you get it too, even if you don't want it".

Overall, I think grouping together to have a more powerful negotiating position is better for the group as a whole... It's a classic Nash Equilibrium problem, and obvious to many people that grouping together even if you don't want the exact same things is still better.

I'm not sure why people who advocate for staying "alone" in your negotiation think that the outcome will be better by leaving the employer in the state of having more power in the negotiation by you being alone. Can you explain if you see it as better for any reason other than that you prefer to "have yours" even if "yours" is more for you at the cost of less for us all?

etherealG··on DigitalOcean App Platform
True, but at while later of “tech” is useful to you? I often solve problems with only google sheets. Why bother with an app if you don’t need it. Same for other layers of “infra”.
etherealG··on You've only added two lines – why did that take two days?
Actually the correct fix is correctly flagging the field as a password field, which fixes the capitalisation problem on iOS and Android.
etherealG··on Germany's data chief tells ministries WhatsApp is a no-go
An anecdote from South Africa: SMS was charged per message at very high rates. MMS even higher. Mobile data, while expensive too, was much cheaper per message. Also, free wifi was quite common in many urban areas. All this at a time when WhatsApp was much much simpler and easier to use, with good UX. The person to person advertising for WhatsApp at the time was “it’s free”, which while not 100% true factoring in mobile bandwidth, it was effectively true since mobile data and WiFi was at least 1 or 2 orders of magnitude cheaper than SMS or MMS.

That stayed true for a few years, and so WhatsApp became the de facto standard for messaging.

I can’t speak for other countries but in South Africa that’s why. And the rest is just networking effects.

etherealG··on Apple, Google ban location tracking in apps using their contact-tracing system
Actually I think the comparison is a good one, but mostly due to governments acting in their own interest rather than the interest of the people :)
etherealG··on Shirt Without Stripes
But the algorithm wasn’t programmed to act in the customer’s interest. It was programmed in amazons.
etherealG··on Shirt Without Stripes
But it’s not a search tool. It’s a make Amazon money tool, as all their tools are. I think you misunderstand why amazon build these tools if you think they are to make your life easier in trying to locate things to buy on their site. That’s a happy coincidence. They build them to make money.
etherealG··on Hardware Microphone Disconnect in Mac and iPad
Look for details of the audio processing in the tech specs. Even better, check a good reputable review site like headfi.
etherealG··on Hackers Were Inside Citrix for Five Months
Not sure if that was an intentional mistype of "sweat spot", but given your description of their competence level I read that as a word play on sweating due to the nervousness of their code being ready to blow up vs. "sweet spot" meaning the good balance between cost and value.

Very clever :)

etherealG··on Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2020?
While I agree supplementing with cycling or running is great, on the boulders if you’re too “top heavy” try focusing on “wobbly” problems more. Find a gym with a slab wall, and practice balance style climbing where you don’t need strength in the arms & shoulders. Doing that regularly will balance out the legs portion easily if biking or running isn’t your thing.
etherealG··on Mastercard Bans Automatic Billing After Free Trials
Sorry to hijack the top comment, but can the title here be changed please to reflect the reality of the situation. Mastercard are not doing what this title says.
etherealG··on IRS Tried to Hide Emails That Show Tax Industry Influence over Free File Program
Totally agree, it seems crazy that my country of origin can figure out how to have a free online filing system and the US can't. Not sure how to characterise the problem, since corruption isn't a simple enough measure, we have tons of that in South Africa too. It's complicated I guess.

Also, please stop using outdated terms like "third world countries". The world hasn't been broken up into 2 different brackets of income for a long time. See https://www.gatesfoundation.org/Who-We-Are/Resources-and-Med...

etherealG··on AirPods Pro
Perhaps the reason for that is it’s been tested on Safari on an iPhone but not on Firefox on a fast desktop processor because the method used to animate is something fast in 1 browser but not in the other. Perhaps your comment didn’t consider that Apple’s marketing team only cater to their existing core demographic most likely already using an iPhone and not interested in the product at hand. But most of all, you didn’t bother to consider the software stack that had a huge impact on performance. And neither did Apple.

yes, but the point is that spammers can easily modify that part of the address to make the filter stop working.
