esoterae··on Systemd, ten years later: a historical and technical retrospective
> Again, I’m not saying that systemd is perfect but that most of the complaints tend not to acknowledge the many problems it solved

It solved nothing but the problems made up to justify its existence. And the ones those faux solutions created downstream. Boot ordering problem? Feh. What a gaslight fest. All caused by chasing 1.2s faster boots. What a colossal waste of everyone's time. This is the same cancer that Shuttleworth tried to foist on everyone with that UI abomination. Servers are desktops are laptops are tablets are phones!

esoterae··on Systemd, ten years later: a historical and technical retrospective
The conventions "Do one thing and do it well", and "Don't break the user experience" are not threadbare or shabby. Not UNIX nor its derivatives did spring fully formed from the foreheads of K̶n̶u̶t̶h̶ Thompson or Ritchie; it was written as a series of counterpoints to the prevailing designs and implementations of the day.

To us the ashes of our ancestors are sacred and their resting place is hallowed ground. You wander far from the graves of your ancestors and seemingly without regret.

esoterae··on The SIR Model of Epidemics
Just following up to point out the subsequent publication of the existence of a report by US intelligence services indicating a massive cover-up of actual SARS-CoV-2 involvement statistics for Wuhan and across all of mainland China.

I submit https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/ez13dv/oc_... as illustrating my earlier point.

I also submit https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3871594

esoterae··on The SIR Model of Epidemics
These are all countries with aggressive health programs developed in the aftermath of SARS and honed by H1N1. You're comparing apples and oranges not only in terms of border controls limiting ingress after recognition, but also SARS-CoV-2 first outbreak appears in the middle of a dense urban population. That initial outbreak was then allowed to gain a foothold as the government wrongfully silenced the people calling for help, vs. these three having aggressive policies to prevent suspect cases from entering the country on top of aggressive screening and testing policies spread across the urban lifescape.
esoterae··on The SIR Model of Epidemics
Don't assume the data going into this model has anything to do with reality. There's a very, very good reason that the China data almost perfectly fits a curve. That's because they used a quadratic equation to generate the data.

The lines of hundreds/thousands of people waiting to recover the ashes of relatives from several cremation facilities, along with the documented arrival of roughly 45,000 urns to Wuhan alone belies the rotten data that even now claims only 3,300 total deaths in .cn

esoterae··on Linus: Don't Use ZFS
Sort of. But no snapshots.

Wanna use LVM for snapshots? 33% performance hit for the entire LV per snapshot, by implementation.

ZFS? ~1% hit. I've never been able to see any difference at the workloads I run, whereas with LVM it was pervasive and inescapable.

esoterae··on If 'Big Tech' Is an Antitrust Problem, Why Are We Ignoring Telecom?
Again with comparing apples and basketballs.

There are alternatives to Google search. I used them before Google existed. I still use them today, when I want to. I have the choice, which is exactly the difference between the telco monopolies and this tempest in a teapot about Google.

esoterae··on If 'Big Tech' Is an Antitrust Problem, Why Are We Ignoring Telecom?
You never used the old long-distance telephone system, did you? The only thing that was gold plated were the executive bathrooms at AT&T.
esoterae··on If 'Big Tech' Is an Antitrust Problem, Why Are We Ignoring Telecom?
And what % of people that actually have alternatives like FiOS (unlike me) don't subscribe to comcast? Saying 50% of subscribers in Comcast's footprint is prevaricating about the bush AF. Why, you ask? If 50% of potential Comcast subscribers have an alternative to Comcast, that would mean 100% of people with an alternative are taking advantage of the free market. Which would mean that 100% of the people remaining are likely forced to subscribe through a lack of access to alternatives.

I don't even have working voice cell coverage at my house, much less data. Again, almost certainly due to a an entrenched monopoly limiting the market outreach of competition, and thereby obviating the requirement that they themselves perform adequately enough to retain customers.

Q.E.D.

esoterae··on If 'Big Tech' Is an Antitrust Problem, Why Are We Ignoring Telecom?
I have comcast service in one of the most dense urban environments in the US.

I have no alternative. I am being bled dry because there is no competition of similar service.

Please, if you're going to compare things at least stick to fruit. This is apples and basketballs.

esoterae··on Don't panic and keep forking Debian
I take issue with your hypothesis.

Tablets and chromebooks have already been around for several years. Why do I still use a desktop for work? Why don't I just ssh everywhere from my eyepad?

Because they suck at making me productive.

Desktops and actual laptops are not going anywhere, because they run fully featured OSs that people can contribute to, not some nasty walled garden of corporate shrink-wrapped ToS turds and ignored pull requests (if you're so lucky to even come within barfing distance of a FOSS component on lobotomy-hardware).

Look, IBM started predicting the death of the desktop, what, 20 years ago? 30? It's not going to happen. Then laptops came around. They're gonna kill the desktop! O noes! Not gonna happen. Ultrabooks are gonna kill laptops! Yeah, maybe.. Depends on how much they wind up resembling good laptops.

Starts to sound pretty familiar after a while.
