esaym··on Doom Captcha (2021)
Funny. I made a captcha challenge of calculus problems for a comment section on my personal blog page. But 5 years after college, I couldn't remember how to even do them myself so I changed it :-/
esaym··on Baltimore's Key Bridge struck by cargo ship, collapses
>entails shutting down the engine and restarting it in reverse. This can be done with a two stroke engine.

Funny, I was starting a 2 stroke chainsaw a couple of years ago. I yanked the cord, it kicked back, pulling my arm back down but the saw started up and ran anyway. But it would not cut at all. I killed it and restarted it and noticed the chain going the other (right) way and it was now cutting fine. It has started in reverse the first time!

Simply skimming their resume would probably weed out 50% of that. A better way is to have a few simple questions on the application, like "Where do you see your career in 5 years", "We use Django here, what are some things you don't like about it", etc. With that, just "skimming" will weed out 90-95%. That said, now that everyone will just pipe that to chatGPT, not so sure how any private interview questions or projects are going to work out.........
esaym··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
A "heatpump" is an AC with a reversing valve. Yes you can just get a reversing valve and have some hack cut and solder it in for you. I'd assume any normal contractor would charge $1000+ for that job though. It would take multiple hours for a tech when instead he could make multiple house calls in that same time (and possible making more money doing house calls). So that is why you won't find someone to do it. It make no sense. Right now on ebay you can get a "Goodman 4 Ton 14 SEER Heat Pump" for $1800 delivered to your doorstep.

Oh and I guess another thing a heatpump has that an AC doesn't is a defrost controller board. You'd need one of those too.

esaym··on Mozilla's new Firefox Linux package for Ubuntu and Debian derivatives
Perhaps I'm missing something, but like 6 years ago, I downloaded firefox on linux from mozilla which came as a tar file that I extracted into my home directory and made shortcuts to. It has been working fine and auto updating ever since

I don't see what the point of this is.

esaym··on Firefox Developer Edition and Beta: Try Out Mozilla's .deb Package
Like 7 years ago I just went to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ and hit "Download". I got like a tar archive that I uncompressed into ~/firefox. Made a short cut to it on my tool bar. It has been auto updating fine ever since.

esaym··on Six Great Features with the Upcoming Linux 6.6 Kernel
I don't know the exact rule, but "abstraction layers" for a driver are disallowed. I believe it was AMD or ATI that added a new driver for a device, but they basically just took the code from their proprietary driver, and then put an "abstraction layer" in the middle. That did not make the kernel overlords happy and that version of the code was never merged.
