erosenbe0··on AMD Zen microarchitecture and Intel's Ocean Cove patent
Just to be clear, in the US you must be an inventor to file. You can't take someone else's invention, once publicly disclosed, and then patent that within the one year period. But if two people have same invention the first to file usually has precedence.

Of course in practice there are thousands and thousands of trash patents but technically those are the rules.

If first person has proof through dated notebooks, schematics, or internal documents they would likely be fine. However, second person may still have valid patent to assert elsewhere if there was never anything qualifying as public disclosure by first entity. Particularly under current doctrine.
erosenbe0··on Exit interviews are a trap
The main one I can think of is companies altering their return to work posture after having an exodus of employees who did not want to return under stated terms. This sort of thing is rare though as it needs to be simultaneous, consistent feedback that is actionable.
erosenbe0··on Exit interviews are a trap
Even internal-only whistleblowing on non-safety things like IP issues or quality can be risky.

In theory you are helping by making them aware non-publicly. But if profits are good they may want to keep these things quiet and unresolved.

With unemployment at ~4% unethical people just want to continue guzzling unethical money until snot hits the fan -- when product or service collapses under the weight of the problem then get a new job at same pay. They don't want to fix anything even if long-term its a big problem. OTOH, when employment is 9% then it isn't a sure bet that equivalent job is available, and scammers need to adapt faster.

erosenbe0··on Exit interviews are a trap
Sure -- in healthcare people say things like "I think new job's approach to managing patient outcomes has the rigor that I prefer" or "I think my new gig professes to emphasize xyz more than this job, and I think that is a better fit for me."
erosenbe0··on Exit interviews are a trap
I've never heard of eligibility for rehire being given in an external reference. There is no purpose for that other than to get sued. But it may be in the file easily accessible for internal use only.
erosenbe0··on Exit interviews are a trap
No way. My people leave because they gain skills and go to FAANG or fintech for way more money than we can offer.
erosenbe0··on The Uselessness of Phenylephrine
Sure but I would not equate with coffee which empirically we know can be well-tolerated by most of the population basically from birth to death.

Adderall (dl mixture) is just not the same. We know Adderall tends to exacerbate acne and some forms of dermatitis but we don't know how much. We don't know if the pupil effects contribute to driving incidents. We don't know if dry mouth from Adderall is worse for dental health than the dry mouth that some people get after heavy espresso or other stimulating substances, like pseudoephedrine. We don't think the risk of paranoid behavior is high but it is higher than coffee, of course.

And of course some not insignificant portion of the population can tolerate coffee or pseudoephedrine, but we're not too sure about Adderall. Schizophrenic, bipolar, OCD individuals, those with tics, tachycardia, etc, need to tread carefully with stimulants, even maybe sudafed.

erosenbe0··on The Uselessness of Phenylephrine
This is really good news but hardly a comprehensive meta analysis over thousands of infants.
erosenbe0··on The Uselessness of Phenylephrine
That's dangerous to think it's the same as coffee. You can have a daily coffee when pregnant but we don't know about a daily dl-amphetamine. Not even close to the same side-effect profile. Coffee doesn't dilate your eyes, for starters. It's just not the same as a dopaminergic

One time I rented a unit in working-class neighborhood for 6 months and not surprisingly the amount of junk mail was half what I was used to.
erosenbe0··on Reinstating our SAT/ACT requirement for future admissions cycles
'Heart set' attitude is irrational.

The most successful people I know as a class are the ones who turned down Harvard or MIT and went to a state school or somewhere private with incentives instead.

Granted, nobody does this anymore because credentialism is now an uncontrollable monster.

erosenbe0··on Nvidia Hopper GPU Architecture and H100 Accelerator
The situation is that various Australian companies (think Kangaroo) and DISH network already have Hopper product lines and Nvidia didn't care about getting into a legal kerfuffle and used the name anyway. As to whether Hopper's estate was consulted I don't know.
erosenbe0··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
I mean private universities too. They take loan money and are also exempt from massive amounts of property and sales taxes. Administrators are getting wealthy financed through public debt at all levels.
erosenbe0··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
The US system is clearly worse and inefficient. Even a GP doctor doesn't finish basic training until about age 30. The whole medical education process has ridiculous amounts of time off -- just wasting human potential -- coupled with redundant learning. It culminates, however, in three years of anachronistic and unnecessary shift work that is a disgusting way of discriminating against pregnant and nursing women by making them work 24 hours at a time. And yeah, they can take time off, but what if they have a baby every year and are never willing to work 24 hour shifts?
erosenbe0··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
Note: 4 years of college is probably 2.5 years of school, not 4. It runs 36 weeks a year and unless you are doing something rigorous, it mostly doesn't require a 40 hour week, except in short bursts.
erosenbe0··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
Correct, we can't realistically untether higher education from public dollars, so the public should get to exercise more oversight.

Whether it is the loans or the reduced property taxes, the public is always footing part of the bill.

erosenbe0··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
Gross oversimplification. In 1960s when states funded a higher proportion of things, students in wheelchairs might have no place to pee and women were not guaranteed same opportunities as men.

Even into the 1980s buildings were simple brutalist concrete dungeons and A/C was not an expectation; there was no campus IT; no plethora of career placement systems; counseling office; Title IX compliance office; free medical clinics; fancy rec centers, and numerous other amenities.

Not just insurance model. 1/3 of the population is on government funded insurance and we still have a mess. Healthcare is polluted up and down with regulation that tends to maximize profit or create rent-seeking.
erosenbe0··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
Unfounded. There are billions more literate people than in Einstein's day.

What are these r registers for AArch64? Author hasn't likely bothered to run any of the examples through an actual 64-bit ARM assembler. Dubious.

Agree, just saying vehicle emissions are part of the picture and more work needs to be done on air quality.
erosenbe0··on When Double Precision Is Not Enough
It's a bad idea, or okay as an informal thing! It is just using the result that Log10(2^53) is 15.95 to say that 53 bits has 15.95 digits of 'information.'
erosenbe0··on US schools can subscribe to an electric bus fleet at lower prices than diesel
This is an important point. I live in Illinois which is over 60% carbonless mainly through aging nuclear investments. It would be naively optimistic to suggest that marginal demand will be only 40% fossil fuel since the nuclear will not be replaced.
erosenbe0··on US schools can subscribe to an electric bus fleet at lower prices than diesel
One problem is that 'diesel outages' on school nights are extremely rare or nonexistent. Maybe deliveries are late or pumps break but it seems like a solved problem. Electric trains are also a solved problem and are hardened from many power outages too.

Whereas some work needs to be done to harden the infrastructure at the school district level to avoid electric bus outages.

erosenbe0··on US schools can subscribe to an electric bus fleet at lower prices than diesel
I have found measuring in typical American neighborhoods that PM2.5 is raised the most when people burn wood for recreation or heat in the evening. It is much higher in the evening with a few neighborhood fire pits than during rush hour with a few diesel vehicles around.

This is also when residents have asthma symptoms too. To be fair they are more likely to be home.

So it is not cut and dry but if possible I would love to get rid of vehicle emissions as some particulate is too fine to measure.

erosenbe0··on US schools can subscribe to an electric bus fleet at lower prices than diesel
The biggest source of particulate in my neighborhood as in most is recreational wood fires, where they allowed. The diesel schoolbus is nothing by comparison. Actually the fires are not allowed but people do it anyway and you need a drone to find them.
erosenbe0··on US schools can subscribe to an electric bus fleet at lower prices than diesel
Nope, about 1/3 of Americans have Medicaid or Medicare. At least 6% of all gdp is government dollars in healthcare, probably more.
