erjjones··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Making promises.

When my child would ask to do something or desire something I might have said, "Not today but I promise in the future ...". Often I would never follow up on those.

Now, I am more inclined to say, "I will do my best to make that happen" or something along those lines but no promises.

erjjones··on Facebook-owned sites were down
Does everyone just buy in that this is just a network change gone wrong? OR could they be mitigating a breach/hack? OR could it be some other theory?
erjjones··on Stack Overflow sold to Prosus for $1.8B
You know Prosus will get all their money back and then some . time to build a new one [thinking face...]
erjjones··on How I remember what I learn
As I "favorite" this thread, so I can reference it later to learn how to remember better ;)
erjjones··on Ask HN: What is your favorite motto?
"Inch is a sinch, yard is hard"
erjjones··on Ask HN: What is your favorite motto?
"When normal sense makes good sense, seek no other sense."
erjjones··on It's Time to Build for Good
.. and there was a time to not build for good??
erjjones··on “Just walk out” technology by Amazon
It will be interesting to see what other types of new technology (good & bad) emerge from this.

Such as: New rfid (or image) spoofing tech, etc.

-or-

Stories "Just walk out" store forgot to activate rfid tags on some product and customers walked out w/ (x) number of items for free.

This will be interesting to see how it plays out.

erjjones··on Microsoft REST API Guidelines
Ideally, they wouldn't re-invent the wheel again and just stick with the ODATA protocol. They already have the platform to do so - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/odata/resources/roadmap
erjjones··on Instagram Has a Massive Harassment Problem
> I don't necessarily have a perfect solution all lined up

The "metaverse" . Where you can be what you want people to see w/o others knowing what you are. #highfidelity

erjjones··on Multiple gas explosions and fires in Massachusetts
Does anyone know how you could go about installing your own regulator at your house on your gas line?

Would it even be able to mitigate something like this?

Curious..

erjjones··on Nation’s top three most expensive places for renters: all in Bay Area
> At what point do we collectively decide, you know what, this is ridiculous.

I would say things are at that point. So move to a different city. Success != The Valley

erjjones··on Facebook confirms that it tracks mouse movements
I could see using this for fraud detection and then kick off a 2FA flow if it couldn't verify.

However, most biometrics aren't the best single line of verification. You still have to add a backup verification of some kind.

Examples, I was working on my car all weekend and my hands have new calluses on them and my finger print is off. I got a new keyboard and my typing pattern is different, etc.

erjjones··on Gitlab is not the only GitHub alternative
GitLab has taken a good amount of funding. Which means they will sell out eventually and the ones concerned about big brother taking over will be right back in this discussion again.

https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/gitlab-com

Some type of crowd funded federation needs to be created and owned by all of us if we truly want out from under this type of concern.

erjjones··on Microsoft Is Said to Have Agreed to Acquire GitHub
Right click and publish to Azure. For the win!!
erjjones··on How to get rich without getting lucky
If you were to take a random room of people. Reset all of their incomes to square one. In a few years the same people that were rich to start would emerge "rich" again.

Some people are willing to be disciplined and motivated to change. While others talk without the walk.

erjjones··on Ask HN: What tools do you use to automate your business?
I did something similar to this in my startup days, it was called "FORMS". This is where you take a particular focus for each day of the week.

- Monday: Finances - Tuesday: Operations - Wednesday: Research & Development - Thursday: Marketing - Friday: Sales

This allowed me to focus ON the business vs. IN the business.

erjjones··on Oracle owns “JavaScript”, so Apple is taking down my app
There is always elder law! #saulgoodman
erjjones··on Ask HN: How to self-learn electronics?
Sparkfun.com is a great spot to buy and learn. They have several YouTube channels, one in particular "According To Pete" is a great set of videos to learn the ins and outs https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9EF3C374FD903ACE
erjjones··on I gave Amazon a key to my house and regretted it
Out of curiosity, which insurance did you end up going with?
erjjones··on A basic income could boost the US economy by $2.5 trillion
Instead of a basic income, why not make the first $1,000 each month of taxes owed exempt.
erjjones··on Facebook Says It’s Policing Fake Accounts, but They’re Still Easy to Spot
Crowd source this problem. Add a report fake account option. If so many (x) number of different IP address, etc. report it, sandbox that account. Simple.
erjjones··on Amazon Key is a new service that lets couriers unlock your front door
Ideally, the cubbie would work like a PostOffice drop box and have a way to insert packages at will with out a code and then the owner has a key to unlock the cubbie.
erjjones··on A crashed advertisement reveals logs of a facial recognition system
Retailers also use your MAC address from your phone which is always being published unless you take precautions.

erjjones··on How Uber Used Secret “Greyball” Tool to Deceive Authorities Worldwide
I don't understand why it was so difficult for officers to find a Uber driver? Why didn't they just stand outside a bar at 2am?
erjjones··on Ask HN: How should Twitter win back Wall Street
I would definitely like the idea of being able to add a private channel whenever I wanted one. Something like #{myusername}-private-{whatever} and then I could approve or add users to the channel
erjjones··on Ask HN: How should Twitter win back Wall Street
So add "veets", video tweets
erjjones··on Ask HN: How should Twitter win back Wall Street
What about adding some kind of market place on their platform?
erjjones··on Ask HN: How should Twitter win back Wall Street
So in essence you end up with the #channels being filtered by third parties? How would those third parties get noticed. Would Twitter offer them some kind of sub domain or special alias?
erjjones··on Ask HN: How should Twitter win back Wall Street
Would you foresee the "pro" level to add in controls to minimize the "abuse" issue that Wall Street often points at?
