ericpruitt··on U.S. postal inspectors shut down website selling counterfeit postage labels
Funnily enough, I've run into long time eBay sellers that don't seem to realize this, either (assuming they're not just lying). I've given neutral feedback to people that complained about how I was jeopardizing their shop by ruining their 100% positive feedback rating, and I have to explicitly point out that their rating was unchanged.
ericpruitt··on U.S. postal inspectors shut down website selling counterfeit postage labels
> Note that they’ve sold so much that even 1k neutral ratings are barely registering - they have “100% positive feedback”

I'm pretty sure eBay's neutral ratings never impact the positive feedback rate regardless of how many you get.

ericpruitt··on I turned Jev into a (lousy) chatbot
It's the digital equivalent of Morty speaking with the death crystal: https://youtu.be/YjepJlvkdKs?t=51. The crystal shows him how he will die, so he iteratively determines his speech based on whether he sees himself dying with the life he wants.
ericpruitt··on Brood War Bench
Link to the video for the curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vsTqNwHquE . I would note the bot is not APM limited, and comments suggest (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vsTqNwHquE&lc=UgxBrY4CkuZx7... , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vsTqNwHquE&lc=UgyZ0XVFDqzJT...) it's likely using map hacks, both of which make the bot significantly less impressive.
ericpruitt··on T. Rex Had a Body Temperature of 97 Degrees
A lot of monitoring software defaults to displaying hardware temperatures in Celsius regardless of the locale, and I've gotten so accustomed to knowing what a reasonable temperature is for different components that I personally never change the display units.
ericpruitt··on AWS says it can't restore some data from mideast facilities struck by Iran
That would be a legal nightmare. They don't necessarily know what customers' data residency requirements are.
ericpruitt··on Factoring RSA 260
Yes. Most cloud provider bill based on wall clock time rather than core time, so you don't get a discount for the machines being idle.
ericpruitt··on A Million Falcons Went Missing. Here’s How They Were Found
I have uBlock installed, and I got an overlay wanting me to enter my email address to read the article.
ericpruitt··on Single log line is 49KB+ (ext4) / 110KB+ (btrfs) of systemd-journald disk writes
Because you become responsible for feeding and taking said care of horse and dealing with any technical debt associated with it. If someone submits code to a project that I maintain that's going to make my life difficult in the future, I'm not going to accept it.
ericpruitt··on OpenAI Adopts Google's SynthID Watermark for AI Images with Verification Tool
Just because something isn't perfect doesn't mean it's not useful. I've already seen posts online that were able to be proven as falsified because someone ran the images through Google for SynthID checks.

> How old is photoshop and why is it exempt?

For one, it's not developed by Google or OpenAI. The barrier to entry to making realistic but deceptive images with Photoshop is far higher than with AI, and there are already techniques that can, imperfectly, be used to detect the use of traditional image editing.

ericpruitt··on Migrating the main Zig repository from GitHub to Codeberg
Amusingly, this post violates Zig's own code of conduct: https://ziglang.org/code-of-conduct

> Examples of behavior that contribute to creating a positive environment include:

ericpruitt··on Mullvad: Shutting down our search proxy Leta
Just a warning that some of the search header images are NSFW. After seeing that they were randomized, I starting going through them and got a dildo for one.

EDIT: They've got them listed under an open index on https://4get.ca/banner/ if you want to see them all.

ericpruitt··on Show HN: Moon Phase Algorithms for C, Lua, Awk, JavaScript, etc.
I adapted the same moonphase logic for the status line program I use with dwm. Did you run into any discrepancies with using January 0 vs December 31st? Some of the translations of Walker's as noted in my comment at https://github.com/ericpruitt/emus/blob/ea059239845ee6d57614... seem to produce differing results.
ericpruitt··on When your last name is Null, nothing works
It's also a dangerous one. For example, are a number of variants of "a" that are different characters in Unicode but are often indistinguishable in most fonts and/or at small font sizes: https://util.unicode.org/UnicodeJsps/confusables.jsp?a=abcde....

AMA? How about, why do you have a fake moon in your backyard?
ericpruitt··on RISC-V HiFive Premier P550 Development Boards with Ubuntu Now Available
SiFive sent out an email on about the 32GB boards:

> The Grinch struck a little early this year. While the 16GB HIFive Premier P550 boards are in stock at Arrow.com and available now we were so excited to tell you the news we pushed the send button too soon. If you tried to order a 32GB board after yesterday's announcement our distributor is not quite ready. Our sincerest apologies to any of you who experienced difficulties and for multiple emails. We expect this problem to be solved in the next few days and we will send an update as soon as the 32GB boards are available. Thank you for your patience.

ericpruitt··on Lesser known tricks, quirks and features of C
I'm getting the same error. This appears to be the article in question: https://github.com/Jorenar/blog/blob/gh-pages/_posts/2023-02...
ericpruitt··on Aerc: A well-crafted TUI for email
If anything, I feel it's the other way around for Mutt. I've been using Mutt for at least 10 years using local mail storage almost exclusively that entire time, and I've never found it to be cumbersome. I tried IMAP at one point, and I was not a fan.
ericpruitt··on US judge throws out FTC's ban on non-compete agreements
> I can see maybe 1 year or 2 years working for a direct competitor, but 10!

But even that can easily be unreasonable on its own. For example, think of people working at places like Google, Unilever or some other large entity with its hands it every industry you can imagine because just about everyone is their direct competitor in some industry or another.

ericpruitt··on SCIM: Ncurses based, Vim-like spreadsheet
Could you explain what made you prefer visidata over SCIM?
ericpruitt··on A market mystery: Why do capers come in such tiny jars?
This amuses me because I tend to use a fork even though I have spoons that can fit in my jars specifically to strain off the brine. I usually use capers to make salmon and cream cheese bagels, and I don't like drippy bagels.
ericpruitt··on The xz sshd backdoor rabbithole goes quite a bit deeper
> Is not possible the attacker simply took over the account of some one genuinely getting involved in the community either hacked or just with $5 wrench and then committed the malicious code ?

Given the behavior of the accounts that applied pressure on the original xz maintainer, this seems unlikely to me.

ericpruitt··on New Ultra Fast Lossless Audio Codec (HALAC)
Being open source doesn't mean you have to accept contributions from other people.
ericpruitt··on Par: Paragraph reformatter, vaguely similar to fmt, but better
Fellow Mutt user, here. I have an AWK script I use to filter my messages before displaying them that has logic for wrapping while respecting ">" indentation among other things. I would be interested in know what your "par" invocation in Mutt is.
ericpruitt··on Google ending Basic HTML support for Gmail in 2024
I use Mutt almost exclusively, but I still use the Gmail web interface to write emails from time to time for this very reason. If you want to send emails verbatim, you can use Mutt's bounce feature, but that can confuse the recipient since bouncing leaves the original headers in-tact, including the "Date" header which means the email might not appear at the top of the user's inbox.
ericpruitt··on No_color
It's a common standard for UNIX environment variables to be treated this way, and it greatly simplifies the logic needed to handle the value. Here's how this can be simply implemented in Python:

    if os.environ.get("NO_COLORS"): ...
In POSIX shell:

    if [ "$NO_COLORS" ]; ...
or, when nounset is used:

    if [ "${NO_COLORS:-}" ]; ...
Adding sentinel values when you only need a true/false indicator just complicates things.
