In our projects we only enable squash merge in GitHub and the PRs can have any commits you want. The squashed commit includes link to PR, and PR has detailed summary (which wouldn’t be practical in the commit message).

In any case, pain and other conscious beings are as real as it gets, so no matter how brief one lifetime is, you can have a real impact by making it better for those around you.
How come there are seemingly zero tests for what’s essentially critical infrastructure?
How do you make sure things keep working? How do you prevent regressions as team members change and tribal knowledge and intuition is lost? How do you ensure all future humans working on the project can make meaningful changes with confidence?
May sound like an ignorant meme, but if they’re really so smart and similar, why can’t they build cities or create cultures or do anything better than just survive?

It’s easy to shoehorn any number of plausible theories, but how do we know one evolutionary theory is the correct one?
Sure, I understand the "elegant" aspect, two symbols are shortened to one (although I'd argue that's not that important when it comes to clarity and legibility).
But every time I read "unless" in code it's quite jarring. I have to consciously translate it to "if not", and even then seeing the "unless" keeps tripping me off, perhaps because it's awkward in English to start a sentence out of the blue with "unless".
Seems surprisingly defensive to not be in favor of a small change that eliminates an entire category of confusion and improves accessibility.
Why not both? You can have a hard-ass culture of relentless insistence on highest standards and a good ambiance within the team.
