enahs-sf··on Stripe Press
I thought this when i saw that giant draggable globe visualization on their homepage. Just thought of the sheer man-hours that must've gone into something so intricate and was so taken aback. They've got some really talented folks working over there.
enahs-sf··on Pausing “Instagram Kids” and building parental supervision tools
Now that most of them are the hyper growth stage, you’d think they could figure out which growth hacky things they could turn off and still retain users.
enahs-sf··on Building apps in minutes, not months
I think the day where Figma emits styled React components is closer than you think, but the jobs are safe for now.
enahs-sf··on HTTP Status 418 – I'm a teapot
Reminds me of the twitter "Enhance Your Calm" 420 status code in lieu of 429.
enahs-sf··on Amplitude (YC W12) IPO S1
At one point our mixpanel bill was more than our AWS one. No one said enlightenment would be cheap. Amplitude went after Mixpanel on pricing first. They basically offered 10M events free for startups.
enahs-sf··on Amplitude (YC W12) IPO S1
The analytics space did not work out the way I expected. I remember the dark ages of google analytics where you couldn't granularly segment your data.

Then came Mixpanel with a product that worked well but had a critical flaw around tying back user profile data into event segmentation. That spawned off a number of competitors: amplitude, heap, etc.

Also the rollup product, Segment which basically put the fear of god in these companies' sales teams because switching costs were essentially negligible.

where Mixpanel began as the clear market leader, amplitude caught up. So began a race to the bottom for lowering the cost per event tracked as well as an arms race of features. Oddly enough, all of these companies are YC backed, and yet in competition with one another.

This space in general has changed the way we build products to be more rigorous and analytical about the features we create and meticulous in our execution with respect to our users. Congrats to the Amplitude team on their work up to this point and their execution that has lead to this IPO.

enahs-sf··on Welcoming our first riders in San Francisco
I guess all that driving around the avenues in the middle of the night paid off.
enahs-sf··on Show HN: Judo - Build Native App Experiences with No Code
If you thought they were overreacted about leg grabs, wait until they see this.
enahs-sf··on Launch HN: Senpai.gg (YC S21) – Personal gaming coach for PC gamers
Love the senpai/kohai reference in the name.
enahs-sf··on UCSF Launches Translational Psychedelic Research (TrPR) Program
I love that the acronym is tripper.
enahs-sf··on Scenarios in which Tesla FSD Beta 9.0 fails
I think we're beginning to see the true endgame to Tesla's strategy. Elon initially said first you build the prototype to raise the capital to finance the expensive car which you build to fund the mid-priced car which you scale to build the cheap car. In reality, we're still at step two which is the expensive car and the R&D to build the real thing.

As a model Y owner, I'm quite skeptical about this generation of vehicles being able to truly hit the mark on FSD.

enahs-sf··on Peter Thiel turned a Roth IRA into a $5B tax-free piggy bank
Forgive my ignorance but I was under the impression this was startup founders standard operating procedure.

1. Form a C Corp

2. Grant founders shares at $0.000x/share

3. Early exercise all of said shares at basically nothing

4. Make 83(b) election to IRS

5. Take advantage of long term cap gains and qsbs

I’m sure plenty of folks in this forum have done similar things, the only difference is mr. thiel put it into his Roth account, essentially betting on himself and it paid off big time.

enahs-sf··on Peter Thiel turned a Roth IRA into a $5B tax-free piggy bank
I grep'ed the article for the word 'criminal' and came up empty. This is essentially a hit piece. Say what you will about Bezos, Thiel, et al., but they are just high profile targets that propublica is going after for the clicks. I question the ethics of these journalists.
enahs-sf··on Peter Thiel turned a Roth IRA into a $5B tax-free piggy bank
As a founder you can grant yourself options or shares at essentially infinitesimally small values in the very early days of the company and pay virtually no tax.
enahs-sf··on RFC for 700 HTTP Status Codes (2012)
762 - Stoned.
enahs-sf··on Utopia, a visual design tool for React, with code as the source of truth
I love that it feels somewhere between figma and xcode. Very approachable UI. super cool tool.
enahs-sf··on Most Expensive Drugs in the U.S.
All of the drugs on this list seem to treat some pretty nasty conditions. I wonder what the payback time for the research is and the target market looks like for each one. I also wonder what the landscape of medicine will look like when generic versions of these become available. How many awesome treatments are out there but uncovered by insurance and thus, out of reach for all but the most rich individuals.
enahs-sf··on Blitz: A Fullstack React Framework, Built on Next.js
Whenever the details are swept under the rug, I feel uneasy. Maybe it’s a need for control, but I feel like not understanding the configuration is not doing yourself any favors when it comes time to debug.
enahs-sf··on Japanese government is selling houses for $500 to populate rural areas
It would be interesting for the Japanese government to rent some of these properties out short term. I’m sure lots of tourists would be willing to rent them for short periods of time. Although it’s a lot of overhead to facilitate, maybe it would allow for enough revenue to keep the properties maintained and managed.
enahs-sf··on Sublime Text 4
For these instances I just use vim or sed/awk/etc.
enahs-sf··on Show HN: Csvbox.io – CSV import button for a web app, SaaS or API
I think this product is cool, but honestly you should charge more. The lowest tier after the free should be at least $19. Maybe more. The folks who are purchasing this product are likely not paying for it with their own money (business expense) and therefore can justify a higher cost.
enahs-sf··on Instagram ads Facebook won't show you
Would be cool to sign in with Facebook and then generate the ad set for yourself that they WOULD have made. I think it’d be quite telling.
enahs-sf··on The Evolution of Jamstack
I know when I used next.js, vercel was collecting telemetry. Would be interesting for them to publish some of that data. I’d love to know the median compile time of next.js apps. On the app I worked on it was pretty slow. Like go get a coffee and come back slow.

Eventually I just got fed up and now wrote my subsequent react app from scratch.

enahs-sf··on Washington state approves capital gains tax
I think his point was the initial dollar you invested was at some point subject to income tax to get it.
enahs-sf··on Ask HN: Please Dark Mode for HN
As a new father reading this at 02:49pdt, I second this idea.
enahs-sf··on Asking rents in San Francisco continue to slip, but…
Even still, landlords fear legal repercussions so much that they're willing to let a lot slide. When I moved out of my SF apartment, a plant I had had damaged the floor and my landlord was willing to eat the cost provided we moved out swiftly. Replacing the floors probably set him back a couple grand, but evicting tenants could be far more expensive.
enahs-sf··on Beej’s Guide to C Programming [pdf]
I love C programming. Even though people say it's dangerous and easy to shoot yourself in the foot, It really is the simplest and most elegant way forward. That said, having to invent the wheel yourself so much, it is not as time efficient as some more modern languages.

I liken it to an artisanal craftsman's tool versus a modern multi-tool like a dremel which would be something like python.

enahs-sf··on Apple Introduces AirTag
Am I the only person thinking of the malicious use cases of tagging things that don’t belong to you?
enahs-sf··on Show HN: Starboard Observable – An open source ObservableHQ notebook editor
This looks super handy. Any way to get starboard notebook into a react app?
enahs-sf··on The first 18 months of a startup
It's definitely him. Having read Uncanny Valley, I'd take his advice with a grain of salt. Having met him in person, i'd say don't take it at all.
