emteycz··on Why is the nuclear power industry stagnant?
The argument here is that a country that keeps talking about green energy, ecology and renewables for decades is now using much less ecological methods of power generation than nuclear, and they keep badmouthing nuclear too.
emteycz··on Windows XP Delta Edition
I thought that was Home Basic. Only the better specced PCs came with Home Premium (and you paid for it - it is included in the price, you could have the same PC without an OS cheaper).
emteycz··on Why is the nuclear power industry stagnant?
Doesn't matter at all. Germany is exporting tons of underpriced (or even negatively priced) electricity in peak season - when everybody has more than enough of their own, so people are using it only to mine Bitcoin and other non essential usecases - and then there would be a blackout off-season if it wasn't for neighboring nuclear power plants, gas and coal. Very weird for a country that has its mouth full with greenness and renewability.
emteycz··on Why is the nuclear power industry stagnant?
Trade is not bad. Saying you don't have a use for nuclear and then using it anyways while badmouthing it is bad.
emteycz··on Ask HN: Struggling to find a job in Ireland as a Ukrainian refugee, why?
Yeah. Around 2019 most companies I interviewed for started telling me they're rewriting their Angular projects to React. Before that there was a good number of Angular projects, but I'm seeing only React since then, occasionally some Angular maintenance when it's not worth it to rewrite (so you don't really want to work there usually).
emteycz··on Why is the nuclear power industry stagnant?
I live near one, it's the best environment I've ever lived within, especially compared to the coal thermal plant that was near where I used to live.
emteycz··on Why is the nuclear power industry stagnant?
Germany doesn't have blackouts only thanks to Czech and French nuclear energy ;-)
emteycz··on Ask HN: Struggling to find a job in Ireland as a Ukrainian refugee, why?
Every Angular dev I knew switched to React because they couldn't find good positions...
emteycz··on .01% of Bitcoin holders hold 27% of all Bitcoin
I buy it when I need to transfer (usually using a Bitcoin ATM) and then transfer it immediately - and sometimes I deposit it to the target wallet directly.
emteycz··on .01% of Bitcoin holders hold 27% of all Bitcoin
BTC has stayed the same price for the duration of my transfers. It's just a few hours most of the time. There is also allowance in the law for this case - I don't need to declare anything unless I profit over $1k/year.
emteycz··on Windows XP Delta Edition
Wasn't the Home Premium for the same price as Pro is now?
emteycz··on .01% of Bitcoin holders hold 27% of all Bitcoin
Fortunately I live in a country where such thing is a big tabu. I only need to declare my gains (and only in case I'm holding less than a year) - and there are none if I am simply using BTC to send cash.
emteycz··on .01% of Bitcoin holders hold 27% of all Bitcoin
Huh? I'm sending Bitcoin without involving any government. You're doing something wrong if you feel like you need to involve them.

True, it definitely shouldn't be accessible to others.

They cache images.

I think you basically agreed with the GP.
emteycz··on Ask HN: Is 32 too late to get out of SAP ABAP consulting?
It's just the right time to do it. Any time is good, but it will be easier when she's younger. I have many colleagues who got into programming whatsoever in their 40s... Also few who started in their 50s or 60s.
emteycz··on Ask HN: What's something useful you've bought that you'd sorely miss?
Sonic toothbrush

Macbook Air with M1

Ebook reader with Android

Phone with USB-C and USB 3.0+ (can be connected to a hub, display + mouse + keyboard works) - I run full Node.js and use coder-server to code on it using browser as my access into the dev env

Unlimited mobile internet plan

emteycz··on Judge orders trial in Tesla autopilot manslaughter case
I got it somehow mixed up. Sorry, my bad.
emteycz··on Judge orders trial in Tesla autopilot manslaughter case
Not in Germany. In Germany, there needs to be direct damage by the suing party done to the suing party; and criminal cases are entirely public prosecutor-driven.
emteycz··on Judge orders trial in Tesla autopilot manslaughter case
In Germany? I don't think that's right.
emteycz··on Judge orders trial in Tesla autopilot manslaughter case
I thought the law is very specific in this case. The responsibility is driver's except in cases when it explicitly isn't - which definitely wasn't this case as no vehicle in EU had the necessary approval when it happened, and I'm not sure, but maybe there wasn't any law whatsoever about autonomous vehicles and transfer of responsibility back then - which makes the driver unquestionably responsible.

Edit: I thought this is in Germany, so I'm wrong. My bad.

emteycz··on SpaceX Paid $250k to a Flight Attendant Who Accused Musk of Sexual Misconduct
This is the guy who has promised a girl to show her "his rocket" and then went to a hotel room with her and proceeded to show her his rocket (his ex-wife told this story). I am not sure what really happened during this flight, but let's wait for the full story, and let's be a little accommodating if it turns out his Asperger's might be the actual issue here.
emteycz··on Judge orders trial in Tesla autopilot manslaughter case
Cool, then that should be in the title for that post. This is wrong.
emteycz··on This Gas would have stayed in the ground if it wasn’t for Bitcoin
We're past profitability concerns, EU is over-paying as much as it can afford so it doesn't need so much of the Russian gas - and Russia is not selling enough to fill the storage for winter.
emteycz··on Ask HN: Is there any reliable source of information for EU gas import?
Speaking about the country where I live (CZ), it's going to be very hard to get this information. This is not something centrally managed. Everything wrt. gas import, transport, storage, distribution and usage is done by private companies, and there's dozens/hundreds of them just in this small country, and of course their contracts are business secret.

There are estimates, but I wouldn't call that reliable information.

emteycz··on This Gas would have stayed in the ground if it wasn’t for Bitcoin
Nah, it would've been sold to Europe. Or at least should've been, it'd be super-weird to keep it in the ground during the current crisis.
emteycz··on [dead]
They don't have nuclear weapons and they signed the non-proliferation treaty. Their neighbor is making nuclear threats, it only makes sense to get under a nuclear umbrella while they can.

If you want states to play for themselves only, the treaty will have to go. I think that's much worse than anything else.

emteycz··on [dead]
The author should visit Finland. They're spending more than enough to have one of the most formidable armies in the world and the most prepared population, only Izrael is a competitor. Calling them a freerider screams "armchair economist".
emteycz··on Ask HN: How was the web before React.js?
It was so bad I don't even want to talk about it...

And it was slow, too. Back then, React was a significant speedup as well as major DX improvement.

(I'm speaking about web apps such as CRM or ERP)
