emsixteen··on Are Pop Lyrics Getting More Repetitive?
I'm right there with you, I'd love to know how to do these.
emsixteen··on Show HN: Kolorize – Next-gen AI photo colorizer
Works well with the one pic I had to hand!
emsixteen··on Show HN: I made a website to find best bus seat to avoid the sun while traveling
I get the same result[1], and I'd have expected that if I still live in the Arctic, but I'm a lot further south and see the sun out the window right now.

emsixteen··on The 1988 shooting down of Flight 655 as a user interface disaster
Likewise.

There is apparently an extremely unintuitive "Show more for all"[1] button at the top of the initial post.

emsixteen··on YouTube punishes ad-blocker users with slower videos on non-Chrome browsers
A bit like how every fourth Instagram post is an advert, and that's excluding 'sponsored' content.
emsixteen··on Home Assistant 2023.11
Locking the ability to set up a smart home behind the ability to code and do a heap of DIY if a big part of the problem.
emsixteen··on Vectorpea: Online Tool for Vector Graphics
Amazing! I recommend Photopea to people all the time who need some PS-like functionality the odd time.
emsixteen··on Threads 'temporarily' blocks Covid search terms to focus on larger concerns
I'm without words. This screams irresponsibility - "No, user, you're not allowed to search for this because we're reallocating moderation resources".
emsixteen··on Log is the "Pro" in iPhone 15 Pro
Great video - Concise and informative, without any guff.
emsixteen··on NSO group iPhone zero-click, zero-day exploit captured in the wild
Ah right, fair enough.

> And WhatsApp is almost unusable unless you consent to uploading all your contacts to Facebook.

What? How-so? I've never allowed it to do that and it works fine for me, across iOS/Mac/Windows.

emsixteen··on Firefox has surpassed Chrome on Speedometer
I use it, but just don't like the devtools. Or moreso miss some things from Chrome/Edge.
emsixteen··on Threads: The BBC drama which affected a generation of viewers
Watched Jericho recently with my partner after telling her about it, as I'd never completed it back when it came out. Genuinely hilariously over-dramaticised, the typical American show where the directors constantly shove music and reactions in viewers' faces because they don't trust them to be smart enough to follow the narrative, but we still enjoyed it for what it was. 7/7 with rice. :)
emsixteen··on Submarine missing near Titanic used a $30 Logitech gamepad for steering
If you're going to go down that route, please direct it at the cost of the US military's unfathomably high spending.
emsixteen··on Driver adventures for a 1999 webcam
Cool read, but was a wee bit disappointing not to have it fully figured out by the end! That's just the reality of life though :)
emsixteen··on Deploying key transparency at WhatsApp
Is this a thing now? Never used to work for me, always got an error about needing my phone to be on.
emsixteen··on The day Windows died
Completely and utterly missing the point. That comment needs nothing beyond the first question.
emsixteen··on Apple passwords deserve an app
Nonsense, iTunes was great and got stick just for being iTunes.

300GB library around that time with no issue at all. Smart Playlists made all other players obsolete for me.

emsixteen··on I bought back my acquihired startup
Congratulations on what sounds like an ultimately positive experience.

Cool to see Norwegian on the site, but the very first Library thing I went in to had an error in the Norwegian. I don't really understand how the site works, but that put me off a bit.

emsixteen··on Debunking the Erythritol Study
Nothing is 'debunked' in this post.
emsixteen··on Discord, or the Death of Lore
Ooh, I've never heard of this before, thanks a lot for the heads-up. It's still messy but it's a great base.

Wish it were open source though.

emsixteen··on Discord, or the Death of Lore
HN may be like the forums for Advanced Custom Fields, which weren't even indexed. I sent a mail to them and submitted added themselves to Bing, which in turn meant being added to DDG afaik.
emsixteen··on Discord, or the Death of Lore
Massive pet peeve of mine too.
emsixteen··on Opted out, yet tracked: Are regulations enough to protect privacy?
I couldn't disagree with this more strongly. I guess we can agree to vehemently disagree.
emsixteen··on The legacy of fy_iceworld, Counter-Strike’s divisive, popular custom map (2020)
Run about the two - the differences are much greater than what a birds-eye view would let on.
emsixteen··on Honestly, It's Probably the Phones
The unknown isn't something to be scared of. It's alright if something isn't settled in stone, you don't need to resolve every little question. You don't even need to resolve the big ones!
emsixteen··on Opted out, yet tracked: Are regulations enough to protect privacy?
This type faux shock type of comment is infuriating and tired beyond belief.

Pop-ups and cookie banners have absolutely nothing to do with the regulations. At all. They're simply a mechanism to collect consent for the data that they do store, and they're intentionally obnoxious in order to push you towards accepting immediately rather than dealing with the faff.

emsixteen··on Honestly, It's Probably the Phones
Oof, this makes me sad. Sure it's always good to have the facts at hand if actually necessary, but open discussion is great and sorely missing from a lot of modern interactions.
emsixteen··on Met Office says Northern Lights will be visible in England tonight and tomorrow
Nice one. Would be nice to have it location based, not just adjust to timezone.

Another great tool from over here that I've made use of a lot is Tromsø Geophysical Observatory's magnetometer stackplots page[1], but not for forecasting obviously.

emsixteen··on The FBI now recommends using an ad blocker when searching the web
I currently use an add-on to block search engine results (Highlight or Hide Search Engine Results[1]) so Kagi sounded interesting, but the free tier having a limit of 50 searches puts it out of the realm of even giving it a trial period for me.

I really like the idea about a sort of global blacklist for your permissions.
