emsixteen··on Google spoofed via DKIM replay attack: A technical breakdown
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you don't manually check the headers for every single email, or even only every one from Google and co, so are you doing something to flag or visualise this in some way?
emsixteen··on I Fought the IRS for Over $12K and won
Ah right, that's odd, wasn't aware I lived in a totalitarian society here in the Nordics. We literally just get a notification to check it, and because the state is neither trying to gotcha us or baby us, that's just the norm. The part that takes longest for me in the whole process is usually the 2FA.
emsixteen··on Minimal CSS-only blurry image placeholders
Forgive my ignorance, feel like it's embarrassing to ask here to be honest, but can someone explain how this helps/works? I've never actually used these placeholders, but I always imagined that they work by processing the image beforehand on the server and using something like a super low quality image or gradient or such as the placeholder. If this is done in pure CSS, does the browser not need to download the image first to figure out what's in it, before then doing the placeholder effect? Perhaps it doesn't help that I've not had my morning coffee yet, but I don't understand.
emsixteen··on Nvidia's RTX 5090 power connectors are melting
This same thing happening on the 40 series cards was good enough vindication for me not 'upgrading' to that at the time. I'd rather not burn my house down with my beloved inside.

Can't believe the same is happening again.

emsixteen··on Everyone knows your location: tracking myself down through in-app ads
If you're using iOS you can set certain contacts to bypass silent mode so that you still hear their notifications/calls. I know it doesn't help with unknown numbers, but just saying in case you're not aware. I'd be surprised if you can't do the same on Android.
emsixteen··on Openhaystack: Build 'AirTags' – track Bluetooth devices via Apple's network
The clones are limited though, are they not? Like, they don't have the directional stuff and all that do they? I may be misremembering what I've read elsewhere.
emsixteen··on Nokia Design Archive
I feel genuinely stupid trying to use a website like this.
emsixteen··on Web page annoyances that I don't inflict on you
I think this is beyond being nitpicky.
emsixteen··on The era of open voice assistants
More than a million? It says on the page: "424,548 Active Home Assistant Installations"

Am I missing something? Is it that these are just those you know are sharing details, and you can scale that up by a known percentage? :)

emsixteen··on Spotify has shut down several API endpoints
This seems to be very obvious to me when I see the recommended playlists I get handed. Some good bait, but lots of filler tripe.
emsixteen··on I Don't Have Spotify
Honestly doesn't sum it up very well, given that it doesn't even mention that it's an extension.
emsixteen··on Bop Spotter
Love it! A piece of the sort of Internet that's largely gone missing. If anything I wish it could automatically add to <insert platform> playlists.
emsixteen··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
> As a podcast listener, I lose interest if I can tell the audio is AI-generated...

I've never naturally come across a podcast that's AI generated to have this reaction.

emsixteen··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
Don't worry, you're not alone. I can't remember what I didn't like about it, but I really wasn't a fan.

Thankfully there's plenty out there I am a fan of!

emsixteen··on ADHD headband treats symptoms in 20 minutes per day
I am unbelievably skeptical to this and am having trouble believing this is anything other than quack stuff, but I don't have the personal skill or knowledge to make real sense of this – I'd need some real research presented rather than a marketing video. Anyone here able to help explain the head-zap-o-tron and how viable it is to a pleb like myself?

Absolutely fascinating if it works, though.

emsixteen··on LinkedIn blocked due Meshtastic video in private chat
> I can't even imagine having a conversation with a friend anymore the way I used to in the 1990s and early 2000s.

I do wonder what you actually mean by this.

> Those who think social media has "corrupted" society are barking up the wrong tree.

There is clear, evidenced research around social media's negative effect on society.

emsixteen··on Kim Dotcom's extradition to the U.S. given green light by New Zealand
I'm pretty sure that's the point they're getting at - that the original person commenting was talking about this stuff like it's just memes, in bad faith.
emsixteen··on Serious Sam handled massive amounts of enemies on 56k modem connections
It was popular because it was fun.
emsixteen··on Ice – open source menu bar manager for macOS
I use Hidden Bar too, it's done the job for me, but if there's a reason to hop to another I'm all ears.
emsixteen··on At Microsoft, years of security debt come crashing down
This comment is the first indication to me that they're actually separate products.
emsixteen··on Understanding and avoiding visually ambiguous characters in IDs
I advocate for accessibility and inclusivity constantly, but not implementing additional measures which are helpful to most due to some not being able to make use of that one aid is not the way to go. Direct your hate elsewhere.
emsixteen··on Psychiatric risks for worsened mental health after psychedelic use
It's a valid comment, you don't need to be offended.
emsixteen··on Working with Tilt/Shift Lenses (2022)
Googled that head and I really don't get the point. Just get an L bracket and be done with it, surely.
emsixteen··on The largest climatized reading space
This is ironic in the same way that Alanis Morissette's song is.

Beautiful space. I'm sure it's a great place to spend some time.

emsixteen··on JPEG XL Is a Stupid Name
I'm entirely on board with this rant. That the XL means anything other than "extra large" is news to me.
emsixteen··on How deceptive design is used to compromise your privacy and how to fight back
> That, plus having a couple of templates handy to copy/paste when you get individualized outreach from sales teams

Do you mind elaborating/sharing?

emsixteen··on Show HN: Aldi Price Map
This comment made me twitch involuntarily.
emsixteen··on F-Zero courses from a dead Nintendo satellite service restored using VHS and AI
I'm glad for this article and these comments. How I've never heard of Satellaview or Sega Channel before now I'll never know, but fascinating to find out about!
emsixteen··on Show HN: Improve cognitive focus in 1 minute
Thumbnail for that video is literally "Eliminate stress in seconds", but is an 11 minute video.
emsixteen··on Show HN: TLD Squatting
I live in Norway and have never seen a .nu domain.
