emptyfile··on Taken under fascism, Spain’s ‘stolen babies’ are learning the truth
Never heard of clero-fascism? Most Catholics haven't. I guess they don't mention it often in our history books here in Europe.

You can start your education here, I know of it because its my country, but I'm sure its only the tip of the iceberg.

emptyfile··on Europe is in danger of rolling electricity shortages
Looks important, if only it weren't written in a bunch of twitter posts with GIFs and reaction pics thrown in every paragraph, I might even read it then.

Seriously, looks like a 14 year old wrote it. I'm not wasting even 5min to parse it.

emptyfile··on Podcasting is just radio now
Yeah I agree absolutely.

I find the rise of video and podcasts quite tragic actually. Destroying our collective attention spans year on year.

I understand the idea, listening to something while driving, walking, etc.

It just doesn't work for me at all. I zone out during boring bits, zone out during interesting bits following my thoughts, and generally lose interest if the narrator/dialogue is too slow (they usually are).

emptyfile··on ‘We don’t have to feel like prey’: the female joggers running with guns
Weather these safety issues are real or imagined, feeling so unsafe you have to do sports with a firearm is a clear sign of a failed society.
emptyfile··on The sum of all knowledge and the sorry state of the web
I'm so infuriated by your link I'm at a loss for words.

EDIT: This is an UNIVERSITY newspaper? I thought it would be some kind of british tabloid or something... depressing

emptyfile··on President Putin has announced a partial mobilization in Russia
Yes.

Ukraine is in Europe. Nuking Ukraine means the wind will likely carry the fallout radiation into Russia, Belarus and Poland at the least.

I doesn't matter if its 1 nuke or a 100 nukes, irradiating NATO citizens is THE red line.

If Russia can nuke Europe without fear of reprisal, then NATO is defunct and a new nuclear arms race will probably start in Europe, with unforeseeable consequences.

So I would say yes, if Russia nukes a European capital with a multi-million pop, then nuclear war with Russia is the only course of action.

emptyfile··on So You Want to Compete with Steam (2018)
What? People other then low attention span children watch video reviews rather then read normal text articles?

News to me.

emptyfile··on President Putin has announced a partial mobilization in Russia
Here in the real world no one gets anything because they "deserve it".

If they want a future they have to fight for it.

emptyfile··on President Putin has announced a partial mobilization in Russia
Targeting a civilian target with a strategic weapon is a completely different thing than tactical nuclear weapons.

Kiev getting nuked means all out nuclear war. At the very least you know Putin loves himself too much to die like that.

emptyfile··on President Putin has announced a partial mobilization in Russia
They can't even build the infrastructure on their own.
emptyfile··on Nagorno-Karabakh’s Myth of Ancient Hatreds (2020)
>so the hatred survived very intact through the entire Soviet era.

where is your evidence that this hatred predates the Soviet era?

I live in ex-Yugoslavia where myths(perceived from outside) of "ancient ethnic hatred" are pervasive, while in reality they cannot be traced earlier then the 20th century.

The peoples here yearned for a united country of the south slavs (Jugoslavia) for centuries, then started killing each other within a few decades of forming that country for quite prosaic reasons mostly related to personal liberties and dividing state incomes and expenses

I doesn't take ancient ethnic hatred to start a war, scarce water or land resource will do it just as well, and it will create enough "new ethnic hatred" to last a century

emptyfile··on A remarkable kid has died in Newcastle, Utah
Going on the water, without knowing how to swim and drowning is NOT a tragic accident.

It's like going to jump with a parachute, by yourself, having never done so before.

It's a stupid, stupid risk and dying is not accidental or unexpected.

emptyfile··on Crazy Thin ‘Deep Insert’ ATM Skimmers
Selling an item without contacting the tax authority's internet server and processing the transaction is illegal in my country, and others in Europe.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiscalization

If you want to sell anything to anyone, and you're in the VAT system, you have to be online at all times.

emptyfile··on Patagonia founder gives away the company
>Yvon's note doesn't say anything about climate change.

So this is the standard level of reading comprehension on HN these days?

LITERALLY the third sentence in the first paragraph.

>I never wanted to be a businessman. I started as a craftsman, making climbing gear for my friends and myself, then got into apparel. As we began to witness the extent of ***global warming***...

emptyfile··on The B-52 was designed in a hotel room over one weekend
>Is it really a better alternative to putting some bomb bay doors on a modern Boeing?

yes

emptyfile··on What's SAP, and why's it worth $163B? (2020)
Yeah because developing business practices from scratch for a giant company is a coding problem so 100 developers should solve it... probably as difficult as making the next Uber for rikshas, right?

Posters in this thread are so clueless it hurts to read.

emptyfile··on What's SAP, and why's it worth $163B? (2020)
ERP guy here

>people complain that things don't work

that's a problem and we're going to have to fix it

>it takes an order of magnitude more time and effort

that's not a problem

the fact that Jane the accounting drone has to do twice the amount of work, or has to hire an intern to help her out, or even wants to quit because the job is so awful now is not a problem

it's a rounding error in the overall cost of implementing an ERP system

a new screen with some new data to show for the exec is worth 20 Jane's and her opinions on the new system

you can't even call the new system unethical or fraudulent because 10 people other then Jane can now stop using broken excel sheets to organize their work

basically Jane is collateral damage

emptyfile··on I Got Banned for Life from Airbnb (2018)
Isn't it also a social norm to not be racist and rude, especially in service jobs?
emptyfile··on I Got Banned for Life from Airbnb (2018)
You literally tipped a racist insulting you... why?
emptyfile··on Singing: The key to a long life (2008)
Singing in the office seems like the most obnoxious thing ever. Can't believe anyone would tolerate that.
emptyfile··on You can't afford to be an artist and/or author, let alone be respected
Not terribly insightful. You could say the same for dog haircuts.
emptyfile··on Elon Musk sells $6.9B worth of Tesla stock
Marketing the Auto Pilot. Self driving taxis by 2018 or whatever.

Everyone involved with programming or science in general should have called that a scam from the very begging and I'm still mystified that everyone bought it.

emptyfile··on Elon Musk sells $6.9B worth of Tesla stock
"misspeak"

He called the diver a pedophile, hired a private investigator to study him and claimed to Buzzfeed in an email("off the record") that he has evidence of the diver being a rapist and buying his wife, or something to that effect.

All of those were invented lies, but he also won the defamation lawsuit against him, because he's rich and he can do whatever he wants with no consequences.

Oh yeah, he also flew to Thailand for a photo op with the military, showcasing his idiotic submarine while kids were dying in that cave.

He's a narcissistic asshole at best, a sociopath at worst.

emptyfile··on TikTok’s Poison Pill
Yeah, sure.

The entire world revolves around the American Race Problem. As it always does from inside your bubble.

emptyfile··on Y Combinator narrows current cohort size by 40%, citing downturn and funding
These kind of comments irritate me so much.

They would invest in mass produced bottled Himalayan air if they thought it would turn a quick buck.

emptyfile··on The world that Twitter never made
I'm always amused by how Americans view Twitter.

In my part of Europe, if journalists and politicians didn't use it like their English speaking counterparts do, it would be as relevant as Google+.

emptyfile··on A personal trainer is the best investment I've made
Sure, you are broadly correct, however.

>But for regular people, the goal is to overall improve their body and condition using a small time span

No, the poster above you directly specified running endurance. That's what we're talking about NOT just running for general health. And not limiting training to a couple of hours per week.

>interval training

Interval training in the context is a pace-specific running workout, not interchangeable with HIIT.

Besides that the main point would be that long slow aerobic training has benefits that HIIT doesn't, mostly regarding the volume of blood the heart can pump.

So its not just for performance. Long slow volume will give you a lower resting heart rate and adaptions that HIIT alone will not.

emptyfile··on Can the knees go over the toes? (2016)
Whenever someone is promoting "The Truth" which is so much better then the stuff other people offer, I'm immediately suspicious and repulsed.

In my experience the best experts are humble.

emptyfile··on Can the knees go over the toes? (2016)
As I said in the comment below, my point is more that I don't want to give ad revenue to people like him.

    >What he teaches has solid foundations, with multiple testimonies from legitimate athletes.
There are many channels with similar advice, I'd rather give clicks to them. Fitness FAQ comes to mind first.
