I'm a beardless unix greybeard who loves dabbling in new computer languages.

I'm also fascinated in the psychology of belief.

Philosophically a skeptic, but I don't attend their services :-)

emmelaich··on Slouching Towards Bethlehem – Joan Didion (1967)
Among many memorable passages, I think I find this the most memorable:

> Right there you’ve got the ways that romanticism historically ends up in trouble, lends itself to authoritarianism. When the direction appears. How long do you think it’ll take for that to happen?” is a question a San Francisco psychiatrist asked me.

emmelaich··on IPv6 is not insecure because it lacks a NAT
Security is not a binary. NAT is (slightly?) more secure.
emmelaich··on Are arrays functions?
Not a semantic difference, just a performance difference ... and a function can cache for the same performance anyway.
emmelaich··on 40% of Kids Can't Read and Teachers Are Quitting [video]
Australia's social media ban for young teenagers is probably a good thing but time will tell.
emmelaich··on Scott Adams has died
> Most non-racists don’t need to spend 30 minutes on cable news explaining themselves to save face.

That's the sort of thing an Catholic inquisitor would say. Denial proves guilt!

from the same newsletter. How to be Funny.

> Humor often comes from the weird thoughts and emotions involved in a situation, as opposed to the simple facts. The best fodder for humor can be communicated by a simple description of the situation and then saying "So then I was thinking..."

emmelaich··on Kafka Inc
Reminds me Borges' story "Borges and I" - the public and the private persona.

https://www.themarginalian.org/2016/09/06/borges-and-i/

> The other one, the one called Borges, is the one things happen to. I walk through the streets of Buenos Aires and stop for a moment, perhaps mechanically now, to look at the arch of an entrance hall and the grillwork on the gate; I know of Borges from the mail and see his name on a list of professors or in a biographical dictionary. I like hourglasses, maps, eighteenth-century typography, the taste of coffee and the prose of Stevenson; he shares these preferences, but in a vain way that turns them into the attributes of an actor.

emmelaich··on Boston Dynamics and DeepMind form new AI partnership
I see a future where some humanoid robot mows the lawn, picks up trash, puts the bins outside weekly, vacuums the house, loads the dishwasher, does the clothes washing. While not actively doing those things, it will plug itself in and be passive security.

They will need help doing the finer control things, and they won't do everything. But definitely useful enough, especially for older folk.

emmelaich··on A spider web unlike any seen before
Not sure if you'd count it as social, but the dancing spiders certainly put effort into courtship: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qkzwG2lLPc Peacock spiders, dance for your life! - BBC

emmelaich··on Show HN: Server-rendered multiplayer games with Lua (no client code)
Reminds me of the cave X11 games. For game play I'd suggest slowing it way down.
emmelaich··on Why does a least squares fit appear to have a bias when applied to simple data?
Yep, to demonstrate, tilt it (swap x and y) and do it again. Maybe this is what TLS does?
emmelaich··on Total monthly number of StackOverflow questions over time
You should write it up and submit it to some journal officially. Doesn't matter if it mostly duplicates your own (technically unpublished) work.
emmelaich··on Assorted less(1) tips
I also like to bind N to next-file. Really burns my britches that MacOS doesn't have lesskey.
emmelaich··on Open source USB to GPIB converter (for Test and Measurement instruments)
Crazy to think that the first HP9000 (PARISC) computers used GP-IB (aka HP-IB) for accessing disks!
emmelaich··on Log level 'error' should mean that something needs to be fixed
I need Notice (between Info and Warning), for important events such as start and shutdown, and successfully connecting to the database, and ready to start serving. These otherwise would be in Info; and enabling Info level produces a torrent of uninteresting muck.
emmelaich··on Shai-Hulud compromised a dev machine and raided GitHub org access: a post-mortem
Surprised that people allow force-push on git. If it needs to be done, it should only be done after consultation and disabled after.
emmelaich··on Intermittent hypoxia increases blood flow and benefits executive function
I was given a tip to stay awake a while back: hold your breath for a little while. Apparently this well known for many years but I had never heard of it.

Seems to work, but this was in the context of driving which I do not recommend, having fallen asleep at the wheel once and woken up rally driving down some paddock.

emmelaich··on Kilauea erupts, destroying webcam [video]
I had a look at the crater using Google maps. Does this user contributed photo look AI to anyone? Or at least 'shopped. https://maps.app.goo.gl/or6gj5XnTCTwv4Ys7
emmelaich··on The effect of shingles vaccination at different stages of dementia
Much worse. A friend died at around 35. I didn't see him at the end but he was apparently covered in pox.
emmelaich··on The effect of shingles vaccination at different stages of dementia
... immunity from chickenpox, but shingles can erupt. Also, how 'latent' is the virus, really?

emmelaich··on Atuin’s New Runbook Execution Engine
I had a thing in progress to export a Confluence page to a runscript, mainly just converting `code` blocks to scripts and the rest to comments.

I, uhh, moved on before I finished it.

Attraction and romance is complicated.

emmelaich··on How Charles M Schulz created Charlie Brown and Snoopy (2024)
It touches all the emotions and experiences, somehow being relatable to adults and kids at the same time. Its deepness and universality probably won't be apparent unless you read many of them - preferably the best, maybe one a day.
emmelaich··on How Charles M Schulz created Charlie Brown and Snoopy (2024)
It was very popular in Australia. Serialised in newspapers for many years. As a kid, our family owned pretty much every Charlie Brown paperback.
emmelaich··on What they don't tell you about maintaining an open source project
You should definitely charge enough to hire an accountant to handle the bureaucracy. This might be multiples of the payment for the technical bits but probably still cheaper than a hitman/woman.
