I'm a beardless unix greybeard who loves dabbling in new computer languages.

I'm also fascinated in the psychology of belief.

Philosophically a skeptic, but I don't attend their services :-)

emmelaich··on cp: -r or -R?
old cp didn't have `-a`

Anyway, just use rsync.

emmelaich··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
... how did you both misspell the title? It's the Count of Monte Cristo .. unless this is a different language.
emmelaich··on Behold the pawpaw
There's a hint of rottenness to the scent -- even vomit to some. Maybe like Durian.
emmelaich··on When did Google get so weird?
It's weird but I always some context in so I don't see these.

i.e. I would have searched for dario quote .... or dario basketball quote ....

emmelaich··on The mystery animal on an ancient god's head
Borzoi?

Aardvark to me. Similar snout, long ears. They were probably in the southern reaches of Egypt.

With regard to differences that could be explained by stylisation and the lack of familiarity due to it's rarity in most of Egypt.

And surely the DMV has far greater 'vicarious liability', as they're the ones that issue licenses.
emmelaich··on Whirlpool Washer Transmission Repair (2007)
Top loaders are higher capacity and cost less. And open air drying is preferable to machine drying.
emmelaich··on Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain
That's a problem. That the Guardian doesn't mention the regulation and doesn't give us the wording of the advertisement.
emmelaich··on What Sun got wrong
Exactly, I used desktop Sun machines and administered many very large Sun machines from 1997 through to 2010.

I saw the end coming for Sun when I had a dx2/66 at home running Linux in the late 90s. It was brilliant.

emmelaich··on Winning the visa lottery
AEA leans strongly left. I wouldn't put much store in this.
emmelaich··on English: A vs. An
You can say "they are the doctors" -- but yeah it's a slightly different meaning.

BTW in German, it's a fun distinction. The old "ich bin (ein) Berliner". (or hamburger or frankfurter...)

emmelaich··on An atlas of periodic solutions to the three-body problem
That Pythagorean one with the ejection is cool. I wonder whether you could use it to accelerate a spacecraft.
emmelaich··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
X should provide an option to make youor posts public. And govt reps should be required to use it.

emmelaich··on LG Says We're Fake News [video]
Buy a cast/apple tv anyway and then reset the LG screen to factory. Is that an option?
emmelaich··on The UN challenges five centuries of cartography
Semi-related, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Times_at_the_El_Royale is a great movie.

Mercator is fine. Or if you want something flat use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boggs_eumorphic_projection.

Or buy a globe FFS.

emmelaich··on Claude Fable 5.1 made me a nice animated pelican
They are correct!
emmelaich··on Claude Fable 5.1 made me a nice animated pelican
Are the wheels rotating in the wrong direction? I stared at it they seemed to reverse. Perhaps a bit of a optical illusion.

Looking at the SVG, the direction is missing but the default is clockwise. So I'd say it's good!

emmelaich··on Hacking IKEA Furniture
Exactly. I've referred to Ikea as the MacDonald's of furniture. Which is a little harsh and I do own a few pieces.
emmelaich··on Visual Analysis of Binary Files
I've heard of people 'walking' old hard drive cabinets by fine manipulation of the read/write heads.
emmelaich··on Latah
(submitter here) I wonder whether this is related to Amok (also Malay origin). Also related (probably) is The Jumping Frenchmen and Tourette's.

emmelaich··on One corner of China’s internet is insisting that the Tang Dynasty never existed
There were plenty of conspiracy sites pre-2000. I think a lot of them shared mindspace with USA late night talk radio. Also, usenet.
