emmanuel_1234··on Build a do-it-yourself home air purifier for about $25
This looks great but is exclusive to Apple products (requires an iOS device)!
emmanuel_1234··on Can Hong Kong Sell Its Residents on Watery Graves?
This kind of superstition are strong in Hong Kong. Best deal is the combo cemetary + unit where someone committed suicide (or near).
emmanuel_1234··on Cathay Pacific flags data breach affecting 9.4M passengers
I work in a so called "Big Data" startup.

We go to great extent to not have any kind of Personally Identifiable Information, because the liability is way too big.

It really sucks when a client accidentally send us a list of their customers email and we have to clean up everybody's inbox.

emmanuel_1234··on I Pay for News; Why Do I Still See Intrusive Ads? (2017)
Airline blasts you with ads for expensive watches, hotels and perfume on the in-flight entertainment, be you in Economy or First class.
emmanuel_1234··on Ask HN: What is it like to run a VPN as a business?
- Do not run it in the US.

- Do not sell the service in the country you run it.

- Really, do not run it in the US.

emmanuel_1234··on How a Lawsuit Against Coca-Cola Convinced Americans to Love Caffeine
Thanks! Very interesting.
emmanuel_1234··on The Brutal Truth About Climate Change
I had a minor epiphany last week. I (instinctively) switched my stance from "hey we need to do something about climate change" to "I need to work to protect me and my family when shit hits the fan". Then it dawned me. I'm a small, insignificant human, yet I'm taking a selfish stance on the problem. The people who can actually change something, that is, the people with some kind of power, probably think in the exact same manner: their energy is dedicating to saving their asses when it goes South, not to solve the problem.

We're fucked.

emmanuel_1234··on How a Lawsuit Against Coca-Cola Convinced Americans to Love Caffeine
If I may ask, and you don't have to answer, what medical condition calls for stopping caffeine? I've read a few people (a lot here) who wrote the same thing.
emmanuel_1234··on Am I Happy At Work? Analyzing my entire career
That is one of the benefit of working for startups. It's easy to spin the story as "well, it's a startup, those things fail all the time. In the meantime, I learned $SO_MANY_THINGS because I had to wear so many caps.
emmanuel_1234··on Ask HN: What topics/subjects are worth learning for a new software engineer?
So trivial that I can't really see what's there to abstract. It's literally a one liner in Python.

[x for x in my_list if x % 2 == 0] + [x for x in my_list if x % 2 != 0]

emmanuel_1234··on Amazon is stuffing its search results pages with ads
What really kills me with Amazon is that, leaving outside of the US, I always tick the box for "Deliver in $COUNTRY", and regularly (95% of the time) find out at checkout time that no, in fact, this seller does not deliver in $COUNTRY.

To be fair, I gave up on Amazon after that, except for Kindle's books.

emmanuel_1234··on Why Aren’t We Eating More Insects?
The idea that only in "the West" are insect not consumed is misleading. I've been living in "the East" for a decade now, and had to pull some connections to get crickets in Thailand, or water cockroaches in China. Those are consumed, but not staples (just like French people don't feed on a snails and frog diet).
emmanuel_1234··on Fear the reaper: characterization and fast detection of card skimmers
Credit card with chips were introduced in France in 1992.
emmanuel_1234··on The Fallacy of Imposter Syndrome
Holy shit, I'm actually considering negotiating to lower my current salary because I don't think I'm worthy...
emmanuel_1234··on Salt not as damaging to health as previously thought, says study
Sugar is not essential for the human body.

There is no necessary carbohydrates, whereas you require some amount of fat and protein to survive. Consider humans surviving in cold area with literally no fruit except in Summer (at some extreme level: human thriving in area with no accessible plants to be directly ingested).

Fruits are not the enemy, but keep in mind their wide (mangos in Northern Europe!), year-long availability (strawberries in February!), along with their nutrition value (high in sugar) is a product of modernity.

emmanuel_1234··on Hong Kong government granted US consulate a rare 999-year lease in the 1990s
Nope. The Opium wars and the subsequent status of the Kowloon Walled City are really cool stories. Funny to think that the fortunes of today's Hong Kong got rich selling drug.

emmanuel_1234··on Why in Hong Kong people choose to sleep at McDonald's instead of going home
Adding to that...

You have illegal structure on many, many rooftops in the city (i.e.: slums). Those are very easy to spot, as there is always a higher tower being built from which to look down on those.

They are rented, and despite being super illegal, they are contracted with leases and stamp duty and everything. This is next level of slumlords.

emmanuel_1234··on A man who paves India's roads with old plastic
It doesn't have to drain to the ocean, just to the nearest body of water, which will take care of the rest of the journey, no?
emmanuel_1234··on Seriously, Juice Is Not Healthy
That's a wrong argument. Sugar is three times less calorie dense than fat. (that's not an argument for sugar or against fat, just a fact).
emmanuel_1234··on Forced Labor in Malaysia's Electronics Industry
Having lived in both, I like saying that Singapore is a fake dictatorship, whereas Hong Kong is a fake democracy.
emmanuel_1234··on Ask HN: How did you deal with the fact that you were growing old
35 here.

If not for the physical aspect of it (better take care of your body now, because it doesn't get easier), my experience of growing old is pretty awesome.

You get cool perks like seniority and respect just because you don't look like a kid anymore. Even though you think it's mostly the same "you" than in your 20s, people, mostly rightly, assume you're wiser and more trustworthy.

That translated, at least to me, into getting more money and less shit for roughly the same amount of work, less need to prove my worth and all in all a chiller life. Money is a lot less an issue than it was before, meaning I don't stress about that much anymore (definitely not the case for everyone, but I would gamble it is for most of the HN crowd). A lot of things that were sources of stress are now under control or in the DGAF category (money, women, career, ...) and I can focus on more interesting parts (family, the meaning of life, everything).

10/10, would grow older again.

emmanuel_1234··on American toddlers are eating more sugar than the amount recommended for adults
Even though it doesn't matter. Freshly squeezed juice from your garden have about 114g of carbs / liter (of which 90g of sugar). Coke has 110g of carbs / liter (all sugar).

Yes, coke has more sugar, but it's the same order of magnitude, fruit juice, even freshly squeezed from pure organic oranges is very much comparable to soda.

emmanuel_1234··on American toddlers are eating more sugar than the amount recommended for adults
It's absolutely mind blowing that this article doesn't mention diabetes as the main problem from eating too much sugar. It affects a third of Americans and is spreading around the world at an alarming rate. Why is that? Why is it that my mother knew about sugar and diabetes, but it's almost as if we forgot and are painfully trying to prove the connection again.
emmanuel_1234··on How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Electric Scooters
I would say, that's because a few people ride them like they are super badass, blasting loud shitty music and going at indecent speed on the sidewalk (which is totally not badass).

The one in the article are limited to 15mph, a colleague of mine rides one limited to 60km/h (37mph).

emmanuel_1234··on What Time Looks Like to Philip Glass
He literally says:

"What I suggest is that these are not subjective, but rather objective experiences. It’s also a little terrifying. What if 1,000 years from now, a life span felt like it was only a few days?"

He's talking about the objectivity of perception.

emmanuel_1234··on Macron Vowed to Make France a ‘Startup Nation.’ Is It Getting There?
I don't think this makes a lot of sense. Poverty line is defined as < 60% of median income. Median income in France is heavily influenced by the minimum wage income. As a consequence, anyone working part time will be considered under the poverty line.

And in France, making less than 60% of median wage certainly doesn't make you rich, but you still get access to basic need (healthcare, even housing in some cases).

I'd rather be piss-poor in France than in the US.

emmanuel_1234··on In Twitter’s early days, only one celebrity could tweet at a time
If I go to Twitter on my mobile phone (using Brave, not their interface), I consistently got an error message preventing me from seeing anything. It says I apparently hit Twitter too many times (when I try to load a single tweet).
emmanuel_1234··on Internal Documents Show Apple Knew the iPhone 6 Would Bend
Hahaha. I had one of the original XPS13. When I got it delivered, 4 or 5 keys on the keyboard were broken (they were attached on 2 points, when of those broken).

I got a new keyboard delivered, spend a solid 2 hours opening the whole thing (YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE KEYBOARD FROM THE BACK OF THE LAPTOP WTF???), put the new keyboard in, only to realize a key was broken on the new keyboard.

That was my last purchase of a Dell laptop.

emmanuel_1234··on We don’t need nearly as much protein as we consume
It's not just about getting "proteins", it's about getting the right coverage of all amino-acids, isn't it?

Vegans need to mix and match their protein in specific fashion to get it right. It is certainly not impossible, but it's not as simple as eating an egg.
