emj··on Ubuntu Snap update spoiled my World Cup Final
I never have a problem with this, but I do shutdown my computer everyday. I do actually use arch as well but a lot less than Ubuntu and Debian, my feeling is that Arch is a lot more trouble than Ubuntu and Debian. I am very conservative with my desktop I always want to be able to work, I've had zero problems with that attitude running Ubuntu since it was just an idea. All problems I've had were self inflicted and there are many foot guns for sure.
emj··on Show HN: MyJekyllBlog - an open source CMS and web host for Jekyll blogs
This was a nicely executed KISS project seems like you have had fun. I've built lackluster versions of this in an ad-hoc manner and this is so much better! Minor nit-pick, seems to use lots of IPs/servers/money for what it does, I would also remove the binary from the initial commit.

A joy to read this code, will try to remove my crud and replace it with this.

emj··on Nuclear power is too slow
Sweden had a nuclear weapons program, it was moth balled in the seventies but only tore it down just now.
emj··on Use a laptop as a 2nd display on Linux using FreeRDP
Imagine a Beuwolf cluster of all your devices then you can get lots of processing power esily! Running a process on multiple computers is something that has almost become extinct, we did a lot of optimizing to get that to work in the early 2000. Lone computers just got so fast and interconnect speed is too slow.

RDP/VNC/HTML on a second screen it is, I use my sever witha connected screen.

emj··on The Great Pi Zero Showdown
That and electricity, yearly it's 175 kWh vs 20 kWh for a PI, so about 45 USD extra at least this year. May go down one order of a magnitude next year. (the prices are the absolute max I could find for electricity in my area in a year)
emj··on One Man's Crusade Against Machismo in Latin America
I find that the article does a fine job talking about machismo. I do not feel that what happens when I am six has to define what I am as a father. I do feel that we need to accept that the machismo learned as a kid is not useful as a tool to judge grown men.
emj··on One Man's Crusade Against Machismo in Latin America
I would say machismo is live and well everywhere, family is just not a "man" thing culturally. Even though it's very normalized taking time parental leave as a dad here, there is still so much things you are supposed to do as a man that are not part of family stuff to be considered manly, hunting, sports, nerdery. When things are about the house it's often the technical aspects that are supposed to be highlighted, not how it benefits the kids, family and feelings. We have had advertisement campaigns about these stuffs since the seventies in Sweden, but you still get flack for wanting to talk about feelings, diapers and cooking. See:

https://www.reddit.com/r/sweden/comments/13ojmn/reklam_f%C3%...

Machismo in Latin America is a lot more toxic and hurts the men much more over there, they just don't see it.

emj··on Drowning in AI Generated Garbage: the silent war we are fighting
"Butlerian Jihad" that was the most surprising for me reading Dune that they had a limit on how smart computers could be. The movie was very vague on the subject, and was more of a Star Wars like lo-fi.
emj··on Intentionally making close friends
Makes me even more convinced that I should go out of my way being nice to people working retail it. I do not think I ever get anything "out of it" except feeling a bit more positive in my outlook on life. Then at the local store we have the extremes where people call the cashiers by name, sharing personal stories etc. That makes me feel like I am part of a community, even if it is not a type of relationship I can nourish in the same way..
emj··on Hurl: Run and test HTTP requests with plain text
Curl is a good tool to familiarize yourself with, but I've written test with curl and bash it is very cumbersome this is another level of awesomeness for that. If all you are going to do is connect to a server with some json, then curl is ok, I agree that nc/telnet/socat might be a bit extreme.

Hurl is not enough for some of the tests I want to write, i.e. testing sending a 50MB file, or dynamic content.

emj··on Computer Latency: 1977-2017
I've used your ping data before, it was useful to know where to place my servers, and how nice of you to publish a dump as well! If I can wish for mor data: a min-median-max client latencies for all those servers would be swell, but I can see that you might not want to publish the results of that maybe on per month basis? Just a couple of thousand packets every hour should be enough: tcpdump -w stats.pcap -c5000 "tcp[tcpflags] & (tcp-syn|tcp-ack) != 0"
emj··on Information for foreign citizens in Longyearbyen [pdf]
Professional boxing was illegal between 1969 and 2007 in Sweden.
emj··on You Can Forget About Crypto Now
Well the question has come up before, and since I also know people from all these countries. I have talked about insecure financial environments with them it is an interesting topic but not always ok to talk about. While I try not to bring up cryptos to normal people, I think it is telling that almost no one brings up crypto as a way to transfer money. People invested in bring it up but very seldom as a practical thing more as an investment.
emj··on Twitter’s Entire A11y Experience Team Let Go
To day I learned it's called numeronyms they seems to be very infrequent out side of slang/tech, these are all words I think you should just know around here: I18n A11y l10n Y2K 420 a16z

If you are into making software for something more than just the naive "one market" your first introduction would be internationalization which should be the most widespread. When you make things for government in the EU/US you will most probably have laws demanding accessibility features. The problem isn't the numeronym but that so few people care about accessibility.

emj··on Over 16k people still use a Pebble smartwatch
There is an emulator on the web, so develop something simple and the order one. I wanted to buy ten watches so Bangle.js was not an option, but if you just want something programmable I do recommend it.

emj··on Snap Store administrators removed signal-desktop from Ubuntu Snap
There apparently was communication with someone related Snapcraft so there was effort to communicate, since the account used for upload was a generic one I think they be forgiven for not doing anything more than that. Regarding the reason for removal that is another issue.
emj··on Over 16k people still use a Pebble smartwatch
I'm looking at buying readily available a cheap programmable smartwatch. PineTime was easy to write programs for and that Casio replacement board [0] discussed here earlier also hade a nice tool chain, but with shipping and taxes it's just too bothersome.

emj··on Ask HN: What are some of the best books you have read in 2022?
I have never known physical or mental abuse, until I realized that some aspects of my upbringing were clearly strange. Reading about "real" abuse, made me feel exactly what you said: not wanting to get dragged down by it. It was a good thing actually, in a sad way I guess.
emj··on Ask HN: What are some of the best books you have read in 2022?
* Dead Souls by Gogol

I read it to try to understand why Russia sees it self as a super power. It is an amazing book, it does not bring enlightenment but made me see the war propaganda in another light. There was a recent thread with Russsian literature: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33032708 where the short stories by Gogol were recommended, I agree.

emj··on Time is an illusion, Unix time doubly so
There have been patches the last ten years to lessen the impact of 2038, considering how close that is this is a bit worrisome. Nice to see a comparison of different systems like this, but you probably need to track this over time in some way. E.g Pretty sure Gnu date has seen patches about this in the last years.
emj··on Textual TUI framework for Python adds CSS renderer
Have any one seen accessible TUIs for blind users?
emj··on I am endlessly fascinated with content tagging systems
Openstreetmap is map data that is basically coordinates with tags on them and relations between those tags. I guess this is true for most GIS software but there is very little 2D map data that can not be described in the OSM tagging model.

You can never express everything with tags, you need stats and metadata on metadata, documentation and a strong heterogeneity which also need to be able to adapt to new ideas.

emj··on Going where BeOS NetPositive hasn't gone before: NetPositive+
Cloudflare does not care about MITM enterprise proxy nor mass surveillance, so there should be wiggle room to get it to work.
emj··on Take a break
> living w/ your parents or in-laws.

This does not help if your parents are working, which they usually are.

emj··on Canonical Launches Ubuntu Pro

Common thing for enterprise customers, I can not speak for Ubuntu but usually they are private because they are filled with bad articles and tutorials that no one would pay for. Sounds good though.

emj··on EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024
These are the rules for elections in Sweden; one year until you can vote in local elections, five years for national elections. You should always research this when entering a new country for work, applying for citizenship is usually a very rigid process, and it will depend on the time you send in you application. I do not know if these rules are the same all over EU.

About cooperation between countries; At least the gears are turning, even if it is not somethings that is high on the political agenda. The biggest issue is to have a central database that maps one identity in one country to another. We have not even figured out Inter-country Electronic IDs (via EIDAS) yet, there is no way to even do a manual match of identities between countries using eID. That makes it impossible for you to log on and check your pensions if you work in the wrong country.

emj··on EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024
As is stated below countries with similar systems cooperate easier, Scandinavia, Germany, Netherlands are more or less automatic. This is slowly getting better, EU is working on it. Some key words: EESSI with RINA (stands for reference implementation..), and more generally "single digital gateway eu". The pessimist in me says that it will not be done for all countries with in 20 years, unless we give some countries lots of infrastructure for free.
emj··on Ask HN: How to Stop Caring (Professionally)?
Find small joys at work and concentrate on them. Figure out what makes your work environment better, try hard to notice only when other people do something that makes stuff better. Celebrate that!

Warning: "stop caring" is such a broad term, it can mean too much. I have stopped caring in the sense that I know that the outcome I want isn't always the choosen one. That doesn't mean I have stopped caring about fix some stuff.

emj··on Show HN: An ultra-light-weight tool to quickly test your ping
FWIW This ping/latency tool is a great tool and impressively terse, I've had to implement it myself several times the last 20 years for reasons. So I am glad someone actually shipped a tool for it.

To answer your question: I think your point of view need to change. The need we want to full fill is to do computer stuff, we have a pretty neat computer in our hand it is clear we want to use it as such.

emj··on Pigs and Avocados
This interview is both infuriating hard for me to follow and also a very captivating story. I wonder if that is the writer, Viktorie Hanišová’s, style or the interviewee.
