emj··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Anything produced by Max Martin is ok.
emj··on A rough guide for going back to the Moon
Pretty sure we are talking about the endless AI money glitch.
emj··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
You do not show much insider knowledge though. If you want to make a point do it, do not say things that will only evoke emotions.
emj··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
Aid is a hard problem that is true but the world is a worse place after USAid got raised by Trump. Aid should probably be atleast 100x the current rate, it should not be called aid either.
emj··on Commercially Available Bike Generators Are Not Sustainable (2011)
Lead acid is cheaper because they are really easy to recycle so in a low tech env they are preferable.
emj··on CoMaps: The Offline App That Guided Rescuers Without a Signal in Venezuela
http://osm.org is the site you use to edit.
emj··on CoMaps: The Offline App That Guided Rescuers Without a Signal in Venezuela
There is an upload GPX track function on the website. You then draw your paths with the online editor, above those tracks. Edit: you do this because GPS is not clean enough and you need to choose which paths connects where.

You will often forget the details if your GPX are old. E.g. was it really possible to use a bicycle on that path, did those two actually connect or was it me running 150m through the Forrest as a short cut.

So it takes work to get right.

emj··on TigerBeetle Core System Architecture: Deconstructing Performance Engineering
If one has a TigerBeetle cluster with high inter node latency, are there any easy wins to lower the latency of the whole cluster left? My head hurts when I think of latency in large clusters, so your work this year with latency was inspiring.

EDIT: I guess part of the question is about the problems with clusters with >130ms latency and if there are challenges you consider easy.

emj··on Has the hallucination problem in AI been solved?
As I said you need to be specific, I am sorry for derailing the discussion. What part of AI is the problem?

I honestly think it will be impossible to block the use of AI in weapons because you can not know where to draw the line.

emj··on NIH is ending a key grant for budding clinical researchers
They continue to support him, you have lots of republicans here they see him as at best a lesser evil.

I am sure I just naive, I guess we can hope all the international bad will is going away with Trump.

emj··on Has the hallucination problem in AI been solved?
You have to be specific. You only have vague comments about your own thoughts. We had this discussion with Tomahawks in the ninetees, it is not an easy one. This is like answering how long is a string.

IMHO This feels like a troll, OP have several comments about evil Ukrainian AI drones. I feel it is hard to have a naunced discussion if you only diss one part.

Your question is asking for easy technical opinions about a subject where you seem to have no technical knowledge.

emj··on I close SSH port 22 (and what I use instead)
Using A as root username with Kj as password is good enough to not be bruteforced generally. People think too much about this.
emj··on Production Imminent: 40 Solar-Charging Aptera EVs Coming Soon
For me this is the dream ebike infrastructure that allows the large variance in speed you get with bikes. So allowing for ebikes that can go 30mph and 15mph, those are the speeds you want in an urban environment. The problem is making it secure and also feel secure.
emj··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
Because cash sucks. Haven't used cash in 10 years. I agree it is problematic. I guess a high trust society enables it NL and SE are such places.
emj··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
Linux desktop has always worked, and was better for me. There will always be stuff you can't have on one OS that works on another, this has been true since before Linux. The question here is of what we are given be iOS and Google Play Services is enough, for many of us it is not.

I daily drive SailfishOS on Jolla to see if it can be enough.

emj··on SQLite Critical CVEs or LLM Slop?
The point is you can not trust that people patch stuff like this in time. So practically you have to make it really hard, in a CTF of course it is easy. Defense is in depth. There are architectural issues, e.g. we only allow one upload per instance., and sanitation is done away from initial upload handling and processing. I would say that even local root is not that bad if you play your cards correctly. (What ever root mean nowdays with CAP dropping etc)

Enterprise security can be good if people are paranoid when they build the infra, but as is highlighted in this thread many patch requirements are stupid.

emj··on SQLite Critical CVEs or LLM Slop?
You do not run it as root, all you get is the possibility to crash or execute code. Nodes that handle such things are all heavily locked down.
emj··on Why Book Corners won't sync contributions back to OpenStreetMap
It is a very good point though, Honestly we should have tried to solve that. It is badly needed in a map nowdays. At the moment there is no way to map or display these things and I think there should be.
emj··on Why ugly buildings create NIMBYism
How would you describe the us way to destroy everything other than car traffic? It is not a street anymore. Can you describe it in an identifiable way.
emj··on Read More. Read Often. Read Every Day
I read short novels that are known to be good. Because I love being done with a book. It also makes bad books bareable.
emj··on Amiga 1000: Ten years ahead of its time
The GUI was fast because it was fixed layout, MUI on the Amiga was slow as well. We tend to go that way to get UI that is easy to create. You see the same in all GUI libraries the more CPU you have the more you use it.
emj··on Pico W firmware creates driverless USB WiFi bridge (Layer-2)
I was trying to do a virtual camera on the RP Pico but found the LLMs to be really bad at it. So impressive work.
emj··on Show HN: Clx – Compile Lua to Native Executables Through C++20
I looked at your goals and Load is clearly out of scope. I think the question here is could you load your AOT compiled and executable code like we do with Lua scripts only give the compiled code access to a safe Lua env. i.e. Not giving it access to all symbols.
emj··on Half-Baked Product
So sell small scale scullery, sink, storage and sorting systems to save and subvert storage solutions.
emj··on More evidence is consistent with possible ancient life on Mars (2025)
Living in bunkers is no fun, I love cities but even those are bigger than the best generation ship.
emj··on The MUMPS 76 Primer – anniversary edition
Millennium has a streak of failed implementations lately, VA in the US, two here in Sweden. It is not just Millennium I believe health care providers are pretty bad at tech.
emj··on HackerRank open sourced its ATS. My resume scored 90/100. Oh wait 74. No – 88
You might have numbers on that but after working in a place with a strict no more than 40 hour policy my view is that people overwork for many reasons. Being an open source enthusiast is not one of them.
emj··on APC–2 – A professional record cutter for producing original playback discs
The two groove cutters(?) on the APC-2 look like the weigh more than that toy cutter. It is interesting that this prints in realtime is that a toy thing?
emj··on Danish Pension Blacklists SpaceX over 'Catastrophic Governance'
Isn't Spaceship an requirement to make starlink profitable?
emj··on Private equity bought America's essential services
There are so many things that went wrong during the pandemic. You were not lied to, that means someone has intent.

The lesson was not that vaccines are bad imho. I do not live in the US, so I just find it tiresome to listen to you guys blaming everything on people. There was no right way.
