emj··on Why aren't collaborative mapping and local history sites popular in Anglosphere?
Copyright, when wikimapia started they did not consider how their geodata was copied. It is now heavily encumbered by copyright and unusable out side of the site. Things may have changed; it has been almost twenty years since Wikimapia started.

But yes I loved wikimapias concept, but using the data ment that everyone who cared about that used Openstreetmap instead. And since the goals of OSM and Wikimapia differ a bit you wont have that discussion you are talking about.

emj··on Kart: DVC for geospatial and tabular data. Git for GIS
So how does it work for Openstreetmap? I mean git is not very good at handling large repositories, fsck and all that takes ages. So what performance do you get with an small geographical area?
emj··on AI tidies up Wikipedia's references and boosts reliability
Feedback: love fantasy do not see the problem. The only thing you need to remember is that communication usually fails except by accident. I have seen many definition change meaning during my life it is just part of life. If you are content that you have the same definition you usually do not.

emj··on The origins of the Idle Scan
The announcement describing this attack is top notch technical writing, it is linked in the article.

Antirez should be humble to his younger self, even with Redis under his belt now.

emj··on Do not put plastic in the microwave
At IKEA the lids cost 50% of a container + lid; inexpensive compared to the cost of a new plastic container. I bought steel containers 20 years ago and they are still going strong expensive and better value.
emj··on A customer stuck due to a hurricane who needed SSH
Do you believe it to be arcana for new sysadmins, or some technical reason it is a bad idea?
emj··on I digitalized Berlin's registration form
It sounds really nice when you say it like this, I've always felt bad about all the hoops you have to go through as a foreigner in the Nordics. I wish I had time to rate countries on different bureaucracy flows like the ones you list; child care, immigrant, bank account, id theft, police report, filing and paying taxes as a employee, handling sales tax. You get so blind to these small inefficiencies.
emj··on I digitalized Berlin's registration form
Static PDF or text is a good protection against Murphys law! Having done forms like this I have learned that the hard way. If you want to save state on the server like you mention e.g. QR code, you need to save the form as a PDF or a readable text file and not only as data that is rendered by some frontend framework.

This means you can have multiple people digitally sign or even fill it out, then they can sign the text representation which is easier than a digitally signed PDF or json. You need this because when you update the backend and frontend between logins and there is always somekind of mismatch that will happen. This is especially hard when you have non linear form entries or optional parts like the C/O part in this form, there is always something that slips through the crack in regression testing.

Last time it happend to us someone had upgraded the front end calendar month chooser. It was well tested, but that ment another optional date picker was updated and testing did not happen there. Then organizational and technical Murphys law struck meaning complete data loss for people affected by that.

emj··on Turn dumb tweets into cuneiform tablets
Since most photos of cuneiform will be professionally taken it's going to be a bit easier. There are terabytes of images, and apparently lots of tagged data to be used [1] so not an impossible project.

Just now I learned that standard is to take photos with lighting from the top left corner to be able to read these [2], that said reading physical clay tablets is a bit harder than just reading a paper. I have often been surprised that 3D objects are so hard to interpret correctly from just photos.

emj··on Possible toxicity of chronic CO2 exposure associated with face mask use
> Scientists knew all along that face masks didn't work.

No.

Masks were not mandatory here [1], they were not even recommended in the beginning. Later masks were recommended [2] in public transport during rush hours during a 6 month period in 2021. The reasoning for not recommending masks in the beginning was that there were too little data supporting the effectiveness of masks. So scientist did not "know" for certain.

I am not sure we can discuss this issue yet, there are still too many with non scientific agenda engaged in the debate.

emj··on Dolphin Bow-Riding (2009)
It's easy to paddle along a bow wave; but you need the power to handle speed changes, time it and the skill to balance on it. You see people doing it in Kayaks or on Surfskis and SUPs. It's related to how people surf waves long range on Surf skis, it is really quite enjoyable.
emj··on For the first time, renewable energy generation beat out coal in the US
The extremist right wing parties in Sweden are dead set against wind power. For many reasons, mainly because it's politically good to differentiate yourself like that against the evil greens. Sweden produces a significant amount of steel and has green metal production up and running. I would say that there is a real risk this will not be expanded to commercial deliveries because of populism against wind power, but I am overly pessimistic whenever I see right wing populism.

SSAB and LKAB has experimented with green steel since ~2017. [0]

emj··on Cyclists now outnumber motorists in City of London
Why be angry about it; they are just scared of cars like the rest of us, I live in a neighborhood where the cyclepath just merges into the pavement. The cyclepath actually continues on the pavement if you look at the papers. My point is that we have pretty heavy traffic of inexperienced cyclists, and I never have an issue with them.

As a cyclist I avoid pavements, the are very seldom the best route anyways. I do understand the fear that make them seem like the best options.

emj··on An Uber-like CDN

emj··on Germany opposes EU plans for client-side scanning
Interesting; I think this should be more or less the same all over Europe, but it apparently is not. The Swedish tax agency has never required such a certification but the manufacturer is required to self-certify the POS, in addition to that you need a serial connected certified control unit that stores all the raw receipts (actions) of the POS.

Swedish info; if yo have the same for from france I would be interested. It's not easy to translate the PDF:s into something useable sadly.

emj··on 90% of Kidnappings in São Paulo result from dates on Tinder and similar apps
It is then easier to understand a point when people are more nuanced I will give you that. Usually people comment on just one small part of the comment that is why you always have to try to interpret everything with good will. Saying "Men might have to do what women do" could also be interpreted as belittling what women go through.

São Paulo was a pretty dark place back in the days I hope it has gotten better because it was also one of the most friendly places I've visited. Those tips for women seemed prudent for me back then.

I am more worried about the problem with digital money. It's a lot easier to rob/assault someone if you do not have to drag them to an ATM.

emj··on We’re using our streets wrong [video]
The idea that "a bicycle is a vehicule like car" has not worked the last 70 years. The only places in the world with large amount of cyclists are places that has infrastructure.

From my own experience living in a city centre without bicycle infrastructure; it was really hard to get relatives to enjoy going out on the bicycle. Now when I live in an area that has separated bicycle paths to most places it was become much easier. I have no problem with riding with cars, so I understand why one would like to argue that is the solution, but it took me at least a decade to hone those abilities to be comfortable.

emj··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
I am not very good at bio, so I equate the three to some part. The lab leak story is really bad in itself on a political level, I do not know how we can have a sane discussion about it.
emj··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
The discussion during the pandemic only lead to the "human designed" blame game, so the similarities are striking. It is a view that everyone can share, regardless of political affiliations, a perfect way to get a mob going. It is interesting to discuss how the views on this has changed though.
emj··on Popular education in Sweden: much more than you wanted to know (2022)
99% are a lot; there would be a constant mist of rubber if they all left scorch marks on the asphalt. I grew up in the tail end of what is described, not a part of it but took advantage of it. I believe the author grew up when that movement did have a lot of money and engagement, that then faltered in the economic down turn of the 90ies and with the down fall of the Swedish farmers party.

It is still strong, but not as extreme as it used to be.

emj··on Popular education in Sweden: much more than you wanted to know (2022)
Sure there were, but the organized study circles in Sweden are tightly knit to workers movement, usually there is an house in a village somewhere ment for this purpose. If there are at least 1000 people living there you are guaranteed find one (usually pretty big with that population). The same was (is?) available in the US, I know there where "workers education centers" in NYC where you could learn arts etc before the fifties.

This all needs people who are engaged in the movement and money, not a lot, but you do need a steady supply of money.

emj··on Jsdoc Cheatsheet
While I love a standard for API documentation, these kinds of documentation is seldom of use for me when I read code, it is usually the same boiler plate you see in this cheat sheet: "X a number". Git commits are ment to be similarly short there it is the what and why, in code I often feel you need the why and how, rather than what for function arguments.
emj··on Reversing UK mobile rail tickets
I highly recommend Harley Watsons talk (_unlobito) about ITSO and footnotes on Oyster card. https://lobi.to/talks/papertickets/ that talk is also referenced in this article, a truly wonderful presenter.
emj··on Tech companies are quietly defunding diversity pledges
> way it's currently done is a bit... Shallow, lazy?

Many in this thread have valid whataboutism points of the diversity argument, even if they are valid the danger is that they derail the argument. You should not undermine a movement if you support their goals in someway, you have to learn how to compromise or just learn from them and take up the fight for yourself.

I've been part of building up many organizations, the online ones are always easier. That said I do not spend time with any of those people except online. I do not have the capacity for that.

emj··on Tech companies are quietly defunding diversity pledges
Did not know that about Overwatch, I've only played a little and the heros did seem to have been given some care. The bar is low for most games though.

I care about understanding other people, if you ask a question with no context, I have no clue of what aspect interest you, and we will never be able to have a conversation. If you read the comments in this thread, the examples I see are mostly about inter personal relations that is something that has always been a big cost at all my workplaces. That is completely different from your examples.

emj··on Tech companies are quietly defunding diversity pledges
EDIT: I have no idea how this was seen as an attack comment.

First of all your question is terse and I think you need to expand a bit more so we can understand exactly what you want to know. For example are there any of the very few examples in this thread that you do not agree with? As always when this is discussed people get into the "holier than thou" argument some thing like: "they are not for diversity because they do not think my aspects are important enough". Feel free to use them as good examples of why diversity is needed.

I think you can find at least four arguments for diversity by reading the negative comments in this thread.

emj··on Tech companies are quietly defunding diversity pledges
I learned early on that you need people from many aspects from life in a workplace, it is just a lot better with more diversity in it for me. It is always an loosing battle because people usually employ people they understand, and that is going to be the closest to their own mold as possible. The only place I professionally did not fit in was a place where I had no one that shared my story no one to relate to. I know I could have given a lot to that place, but fitting in as a minority is really hard work. If you actively work on widening the type of people you employ it's going to be easier to fit in.
emj··on Emacs Is Not Enough
He also seems to like a timing/GPU/CPU debugger called PIX from MS, I'm impressed. I wish they had started with the hands on, but the presenters in this video[0] all show why print debug will never be enough. Getting back to the OP, for me even IDE integrated debugging is worse than print debugs. You need to so much data to make it useful for me, which makes things like PIX, APM and other application tracers the thing I go for during debug.

emj··on Ubuntu Snap update spoiled my World Cup Final
I just do not trust new stuff being stable enough for a daily driver, but I still use it because I have to. As a developer I do not feel that this is an issue for me. I understand why it can be an issue.
emj··on Ubuntu Snap update spoiled my World Cup Final
I only see problems with LTS. I do agree that there are some stability issues with Ubuntu that just don't get fixed, but this is mostly an issue with the other releases. This is the problem with staggered releases your fix might very well take 6 months.

Arch has severe problems in my mind especially in stability, but as you say it is easier to fix stuff and that is a huge plus. It's just a trap I try to avoid for my desktop!

Thanks for the explanation makes a lot more sense now!
