elai··on Foreign startup, US venture capital, and taxation
Thanks for the answer!

I'm a Canadian that works in the US on a TN. Would it probably be a bad idea to get a green card even if I have future bay area startup aspirations?

elai··on Foreign startup, US venture capital, and taxation
Aaaaahhhhhhh. What would you suggest for people setting up startups setup as a general structure before everything getting properly started to avoid things like the 6 million dollar domain name headache after your MVP has some traction, but not 'too much' traction. Assume it's the typical SaaS/software business.

Make an iPhone app to connect to your web apps? That way you'll have a need to use it, even if your mostly typing objective-c.

To be honest, an iPhone is too expensive for most of the developing world. Rarely anyone has an iPhone in thailand, and they're looked as luxury items like a luxury car.
elai··on Intel will support USB 3 alongside Thunderbolt
I think someone is working on a thunderbolt -> USB3 + more hub. I personally can't wait until the next gen macbook airs have thunderbolt and hopefully usb3. There would be finally a way to transfer data to/from them in a quick way, their biggest flaw currently. It would also allow me to have a two connection laptop dock too.
elai··on What was the code quality of the initial version of Google?
Considering it cost about $2-$3 to create and ship the hardcover book to amazon, depending on amazon's cut of the kindle book, the publisher might be making more money on the hard cover.

That's just distasteful to delete data. Just encrypt it with a public key.

Higher Taxes. Quebec has generally higher taxes vs. the rest of canada, and places like washington have no state income tax. Also the locations it could be comparing could be downtown metro area's and their costs. 3km away from the downtown core and you get a huge drop in price.
elai··on Legal techniques the rich use to avoid paying taxes
If your a non-us citizen, you do this by just moving things to a jurisdiction that doesn't have capital gain and estate taxes. The US is unique that they'll tax you even if you are not resident in the country anymore.
elai··on Ebook Fraud
Sony pocket reader would be near perfect if they added amazon's side buttons, and a one/two tap method to get to a fully expanded out table of contents like iBooks. Being able to use it while charging from the computer would be nice too.
elai··on On Tesla's induction motor
Being owned by canadians, an economy that is intimately tied and dependent to the fate of the US economy, speak the same language and are fairly friendly neighbours overall isn't that bad. And if the US really wanted to, they could pass some BS law to retake those land claims.
elai··on Show HN: My weekend project, tracking the services you can't have in Canada
Find a generic voip provider with incoming numbers, priority call forwarding, voicemail saved as mp3 files and emailed to you? All you'd be missing is the texting and voicemail transcription, but your not missing much from that.

Could you guys go for .03/minute? I could get .03/minute on my cell phone to call around a dozen countries in thailand (http://www.truemove.com/en/Inter-SIM-postpay.rails) and you can get 1500 for $30/month (0.03) minutes to call people anywhere in the US with t-mobile.

elai··on Indian entrepreneurs in US stuck with temporary, non-immigrant work visas
Other than family sponsorship, marriage, adoption and the DV lottery, the only way to start the immigration process to the US is through these "dual intent" temporary non-immigrant employment visas. That's it. And for the majority of workers, the whole labor certification, the bureaucracy and long long long wait times makes it a fairly ridiculous process.
