ejolto··on Boeing 737 Max cleared to fly again 'too early'
> because that includes accidents like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanwings_Flight_9525

> He had set the autopilot to descend to 100 ft (30 m) and accelerated the speed of the descending aircraft several times thereafter.

That could have been avoided if the autopilot refused to crash the air plane. To be fair, I bet Boeing's autopilot also accepts commands to crash the plane. However this accident could have been avoided if the autopilot had refused to comply with an obviously deadly commands.

ejolto··on SpaceX acquires former oil rigs to serve as floating Starship spaceports
The point is you could do it with renewables without burning fossil fuels. There would be losses in the step between renewables and methane sure, but it doesn't require "free energy".
ejolto··on SpaceX acquires former oil rigs to serve as floating Starship spaceports
That doesn't matter if you made the methane by extracting CO2 from the atmosphere. Then you are just putting the CO2 back from where you got it.

The bad part with burning fossil fuels is that you are putting carbon in the form of CO2 into the air which was previously locked under ground in the form of coal/gas/oil. If you are burning carbon that you extracted from CO2 in the atmosphere, there is no such problem, assuming you didn't use fossil fuels to extract that carbon.

ejolto··on I almost quit caffeine in one year
Try Rooibos as an alternative to black tea. It tastes closer to black tea than mint and it's got no caffeine.
ejolto··on Innovative universal flu vaccine shows promise in first clinical test
All vaccines boost the immune system. It seems like a lot of people misunderstand how vaccines work (not saying you do). Vaccines don't fight of infections for you, they train the immune system to correctly identify pathogens so the immune system can fight them off more efficiently.
ejolto··on Sonic attacks on US diplomats likely microwave energy, government study says
Wrapping a potato in aluminum foil is not going to make it easier to cook in a microwave oven..
ejolto··on Mars’ underground brine could be a good source of oxygen
We have already done that [1]. The first permanent base on Antarctica was built over a hundred years ago in 1903.

What we should do is build a permanent moon base. It's closer to earth so if something goes wrong it's only a three day trip back to earth, vs waiting 2 years for a return window on mars + about 8 months travel time.

ejolto··on Oslo got pedestrian and cyclist deaths down to zero. Here’s how
> London show 73 pedestrian and six cyclist fatalities in 2019

London has a 13 times the population of Oslo, so they are on the same order of magnitude in regards to pedestrian and cyclist deaths.

ejolto··on Supersonic Electric Flight
There is a company called Sion Power that claims to have 500 Wh/kg batteries [0]. "With supply dates beginning in mid-2021 for UAV markets. Broader distribution for the Licerion-HE is scheduled for early 2022."

ejolto··on Chronic alcohol use reshapes the brain’s immune landscape
I've also heard that the control, those who don't drink, are often not drinking because they used to be alcoholics thus scewing the longevity stats for non-drinkers.
ejolto··on McDonald's is adding plant-based burgers to the menu
Pesto isn't vegan, it's got parmesan cheese in it.
ejolto··on Helsinki Relocation Package: City as a Service
That's not paying for roads, that's paying for fuel. You would be paying those fuel taxes even if you were only driving on your own private roads.
ejolto··on Dear ImGui – Bloat-free graphical user interface library for C++
the owner is french, I bet the french "cher imgui" reads better.
ejolto··on 7k MS-DOS Games playable in the browser
aha, but this is a thread about DOS games, which is why I got confused.
ejolto··on 7k MS-DOS Games playable in the browser
Heores of Might and Magic 3 was a windows release, the last game in the series playable on DOS was HoMM2.
ejolto··on Raspberry Pi 400 Desktop PC
The RPI compute modules already use eMMC flash. RPi Compute Module 1 was released in 2014 and uses eMMc flash.
ejolto··on Raspberry Pi 400 Desktop PC
Sounds like you're not the target audience for a RPi. They are meant to be cheap computers for "the promotion of teaching basic computer science in schools and in developing countries"[0]. Adding NVMe support would increase the price.

There are alternatives to RPi that do what you want, odroid-h2plus for example.

ejolto··on Org Mode's new site
Is it a play on the name where they try to make the unicorn look like an ogre?
ejolto··on Black Hole Visualization in Unreal Engine
This ignores time dilation for the traveler.

After 70 days 18 hours and 10 minutes at 5g you reach 0.9999c, time dilation at that speed is over 70x. Which means what looks like 30 years for us at earth only takes 30years/70 = ~ 5 months +70 days (if we ignore the time dilation leading up to 0.9999c) for the traveller.

If you have a space ship that can accelerate at 5 g constantly, you can travel to the nearest black hole in lees than a year. In your reference frame

ejolto··on Color blindness
I can tell you that it's not about knowing my colors, the colors of the apples you linked look as different as white vs black to me. And they would look just as distinct even if I didn't know my colors.
ejolto··on Ask HN: What are good life skills for people to learn?
That's cool to hear, and motivational. I'd like to learn how to play the guitar and how to draw. Getting started is challenging though, especially with the distractions from phones.
ejolto··on Ask HN: What are good life skills for people to learn?
What do you do with all your extra spare time? Are you learning some skill or are you relaxing in some other way not related to technology?
ejolto··on TamaGo – bare metal Go for ARM SoCs
I quickly looked up TinyGo and it seems to have a larger scope than TamaGo. For example it supports several Atmel microcontrollers that are not ARM based. TamaGos scope is smaller as they only support ARM.

I'm sure there are more differences.

Edit: They answer the question in their faq https://github.com/f-secure-foundry/tamago/wiki/Frequently-A...

ejolto··on Oatly: The New Coke?
> The author engages in a little deceptive rhetoric himself by setting a 12oz serving as the baseline.

Yeah what is up with that? 12 oz is over 340 ml, who puts that much milk in their coffee? I had to measure the volume of my coffee cup, it's 250 ml or 8.8 oz.

I usually drink my coffee black, but if I do have milk in it it is usually a tenth of what the author uses. Unless the author is drinking a quarter gallon of coffee at a time he's not drinking coffee, but really drinking milk with a splash of coffee.

ejolto··on Neanderthal gene linked to increased pain sensitivity
So back to your original comment

> They didn't survive, so not sure what that says.

It says nothing because we cannot yet conclude that Homo Sapiens will survive for longer.

> Still, 61 years is within a lifetime. 10k years requires a time machine and makes your proposition pointless.

Interesting! So when does an experiment become pointless? When it takes a 100 years to prove? 200 years? 500 years? 1000 years?

> As good as waiting for second coming to see if Bible's right.

That's not the same. The second coming might never happen, Homo Sapiens will go extinct. In a million years, you can conclude which species survived the longest, but you'd probably still by waiting for the second coming.

ejolto··on Neanderthal gene linked to increased pain sensitivity
That's my original point. You can't say whether Neandethals are better or worse at surviving until 10-400k years in the future.

Also, I don't agree that a conjecture has to be experimentally proven during your personal lifetime in oder to be falsifiable. E.g. that would make gravity waves unfalsifiable, since they were predicted by Einstein in 1916 but weren't observed until 2016; 61 years after his death.

ejolto··on Neanderthal gene linked to increased pain sensitivity
You don't need to prove the the timespan left for a species in order to prove that the species is better at surviving, assuming better at surviving means surviving for more years.

In regards to Homo Sapiens and Neanderthals you just have to wait until Homo Sapiens goes extinct or has been around for a number of years that exceeds that of Neanderthals. Then you can conclude which species was better at surviving.

ejolto··on Neanderthal gene linked to increased pain sensitivity
What exactly is unfalsifiable?
ejolto··on Neanderthal gene linked to increased pain sensitivity
If we get wiped out in a nuclear war or because of global warming in the next 10k years, Homo Sapiens would have been around for less time than Neanderthals. Thus Neanderthals would have been better at surviving than us.

According to wikipedia Homo Sapiens have been around for 300 to 400 thousand years, while Neanderthals existed for 315 thousand to more than 800 thousand years.

ejolto··on What if Planet 9 is a Primordial Black Hole?
That's only true for black holes created from the collapse of stars. Primordial black holes would have been created in the early universe and be much much smaller.
