eisvogel··on Why Does the Universe Expand?
I doubt very much the universe is expanding. The CMB doesn't present as a uniform field and is probably just noise from galaxies. There is too much vested religious interest in a finite and non-eternal universe for preconceptions not to cloud scientific observation. I call bullshit.
eisvogel··on In Memoriam: John W. Addison, my PhD advisor
A thoughtful memorium. I too greatly value my phd supervisor's inflence.

Already using it. very nice.

eisvogel··on Everything is correlated (2014–23)
It's just as I suspected - there are NO coincidences.
eisvogel··on Why my p(doom) has risen, dramatically
I don't think Elon has any malice towards his own species. I tend to agree with the first comment on the article, re: p(dystopia), where almost all LLM services are currently in play, mostly due to the actions of third party clients.

now we have no gpt. way to go, bob.

eisvogel··on I couldn't find a free, no-login, no-AI checklist app–so I built one
It would be fantastic to add two simple features: 1) task groups (for example, a project) and 2) drag-and-drop reordering of tasks. Then it would be the only task manager one would need.
eisvogel··on The Webb Telescope further deepens the Hubble tension controversy in cosmology
I suspect, in a few decades, when the smoke clears and the very latest sub-infrared, stadium-sized space telescope finds fully formed galaxies several billion years "before" the alleged moment of creation, then the astronomical community will finally start to question the logic of prevailing cosmological theory, from the ground up.

The big bang was first postulated by an agent of the vatican, and scientists raised in any religious context tend to generate experiments that confirm their beliefs.

eisvogel··on The Webb Telescope further deepens the Hubble tension controversy in cosmology
The opening sentence of this article is 100% wrong. Hubble was a good scientist and correctly made no assumptions regarding his observations that objects that are further away by parallax are more red shifted.

The assumption that these observations indicated an expanding universe was delivered to us by LeMaitre; if you believe in an expanding universe with a finite age, then give credit where it is due...

eisvogel··on Cosmological time dilation in the early Universe

eisvogel··on Shining a light on the traffic signals of Sydney
I've done low-level work in C++ with SCATS, about a decade ago. It was a challenging API to work with, not fully documented and a lot of strange timing "phenomena".
eisvogel··on SpaceX Starship rocket explodes minutes after launch from Texas
Shotwell is also awesome, that is certain. They all are. I personally think the first man down the ladder on mars should be a woman, and it would be great if it were her. However, Elon founded that company (and personally hired Shotwell) and has been a continual source of engineering inspiration, for several decades. His direction has pretty much forced the global automotive industry to go electric. People may not like some of the things he tweets, but at the end of the day, he is not going to be a historical footnote.
eisvogel··on SpaceX Starship rocket explodes minutes after launch from Texas
I was thinking this as well... It spiraled seemingly forever without failing, while they hoovered telemetry off of it, until pressing the big red button. Massive fault tolerance at play. SpaceX is awesome in so many ways. Thanks Elon.

eisvogel··on Is dark matter’s “nightmare scenario” true?
The only real nightmare is that a couple of Jesuits, the same guys who imprisoned Galileo for daring to suggest that the Earth revolves around the sun, came up with the Big Bang theory to explain cosmological redshift, thereby carving out another century of confusion and creationist psychosis under the psychological rule of their lawful-evil overlords in the vatican.
eisvogel··on Four years on, new experiment sees no sign of ‘cosmic dawn’
Hah that's great. I can see straight away that I'm going to become a devoted, tunnel vision tired light enthusiast. In fact, i'm tired already. i could use a nap.
eisvogel··on Four years on, new experiment sees no sign of ‘cosmic dawn’
Hey thanks for that snarfy. I love this topic.
eisvogel··on Four years on, new experiment sees no sign of ‘cosmic dawn’
Also, the infinty that i think scares people the most is temporal, not spatial.
eisvogel··on Four years on, new experiment sees no sign of ‘cosmic dawn’
This is a reasonable, and i don't accuse all of Science. I am just very suspicious of the certainty with which astrophysics has pursued proof of a big bang for most of a century. There are number of glaring assumptions, many of which point back to an unreasonable level of faith in the Standard Model.
eisvogel··on Four years on, new experiment sees no sign of ‘cosmic dawn’
I've never heard it mentioned, but I strongly suspect that cosmological redshift is simply the result of photons losing energy over vast distances due to some as-of-yet-undiscovered interaction with the quantum vacuum. It was a couple of vatican-sponsored jesuits with an obvious creationist agenda who turned the observation of redshift into an assumption of spatial expansion to support the theory of a single-point-of-origin universe with a finite age and a finite size. I think western science is predisposed, due to religious cultural influence, to being uncomfortable with an infinite universe, because it implies our own ultimate insignificance.
eisvogel··on Getting to Know the Armed, the Most Unknowable Band in Hardcore
These guys seem to be channeling early Skinny Puppy. The vocal intonation and mix in particular are hauntingly similar. It's good stuff.
eisvogel··on A brief history of people losing their minds in Antarctica

eisvogel··on Performance comparison: counting words in Python, Go, C++, C, Awk, Forth, Rust
The table at the end of the article, and most of the article, are meaningless. They are comparing the performance of grep and wc, programs written in C, with their own program, written in C. Python is also in the mix, and is also a program written in C. Most C programs are also valid C++ programs, so the top entry for grep should really be labelled "C/C++". I'm tired of this kind of comparison.

I went to medium.com to read this article about the forthcoming collapse of Google, and I noticed that medium.com wanted me to log in using my Google account. I find this ... unconvincing.
