likely using a real time os like qnx/vxworks for the more critical stuff.
eik3_de··on Contributing to Open Source on GitHub
great.

next up: a well-written & concise guide on writing proper commit messages. could be based on http://tbaggery.com/2008/04/19/a-note-about-git-commit-messa... and http://robots.thoughtbot.com/5-useful-tips-for-a-better-comm...

eik3_de··on Apple vs. Android: Developers see a socioeconomic divide
So if the iOS user is willing to spend more, I could add a few % to the price tags in my online shop if user has an iOS user agent?
eik3_de··on German officials confirm 18 million emails and passwords stolen
I saw a news show on ZDF yesterday and they actually recommended using an email provider that has 2 factor auth with "some code on you mobile". I guess no non-geek understood it but I was still shocked. Usually they just say you should have different passwords for different sites.

eik3_de··on Google's Nest Stops Selling Smart Smoke Alarms Over Fire Safety Concerns
> "Nest can remotely disable the Wave feature"

How can I be 100 % sure that the "just beep when smoke" feature can't be remotely disabled without my notice?

Intelligent home appliances are nice and all, but when the lives of your family depend on it, I'd rather be on the KISS side.

eik3_de··on CNAME Flattening: RFC-Compliant CNAMEs at a Domain's Root
True, but CloudFlare should be a company driving v6 forward, i.e. mentioning that the address problem only exists in v4.

Make people aware that v4 is history and present. Sure, we currently have to deal with it, but v6 and v4 should be treated equally. Esp. when talking about problems v6 solves.

eik3_de··on April Fools: migrate Apache Subversion project over to the git repo
SVN Devs thought: haha, no one will really believe we would not prefer SVN

rest of the world thought: man, is SVN really so bad that even the devs won't use it? That's sad, but hey, they're responsible developers choosing the best tool for the job.

now that we know it was a joke, are we more convinced that SVN is great?

eik3_de··on Mozilla CEO Eich says gay-marriage firestorm could hurt Firefox
I wish I hadn't read the article.

He implicitly confirms his 2008 view. He says being against inclusiveness actually is inclusiveness. He says he's the best Mozilla CEO. He says that much of Mozilla comes from Indonesia, where LGBT discrimination[1] seems to be much more accepted.

I can't help but associate Firefox with Mozilla and Mozilla with it's head, Mr. Eich. I wish I could only see the great people that stand behind Mozilla, but atm when I look at the Firefox logo, I see the homophobe :(

eik3_de··on There is a pure HTML Gmail, and it still works
...and one day google will just switch it off b/c "focus", "little user base", whatever..

you don't need a mouse, everything has keyboard shortcuts. hit ctrl-? for a list.

brilliant and so spot-on. Don't forget the all-new Smartphone Replaceability Index: http://www.ifixit.com/smartphone_replaceability

Why bother with repairing a device when you can just replace it with a new one?

eik3_de··on Nweb: a tiny, safe web server (static pages only)
the minimal Ruby equivalent would be

    ruby -run -ehttpd .
Here's a handy snippet for bashrc:

    function S {
ruby -run -ehttpd . -p${1-8080} # default to port 8080 unless given as parameter
    }

Curious: Why do people choose JavaScript/node.js to write command line apps over traditional languages for that task like python or ruby?
eik3_de··on Whatever goes up, that’s what we do
thanks eevilspock for your great comment. It's a perfect plea for app.net.
eik3_de··on Microsoft defends its right to read your email
> From the company's point of view, desperate times call for desperate measures.

So they're saying "the end justifies the means".

I'm saying: no, stop and don't.

Stop using any Microsoft services (don't forget skype) and better yet any of their products.

eik3_de··on Protect your users from accidently loosing form input with Garlic.js
If you're speaking of http://getlazarus.com/, do you know why it isn't in the Chrome Web Store?
eik3_de··on Protect your users from accidently loosing form input with Garlic.js
Can anyone recommend a Chrome Extension that does the same?
eik3_de··on Why Does Backspace Go Back A Page?
To avoid loss of form input, there are several auto-save-to-localstorage solutions like http://garlicjs.org/. Just add data-persist="garlic" to the form tag and everything is saved until successfully submitted.
eik3_de··on Hack Isn't PHP
Sure, FB, wikipedia, phpbb, wordpress. But when were those started? If you look at what's created today in startups and open source, PHP isn't a very popular language IMO
eik3_de··on Hack Isn't PHP
> it's easy to learn

compared to what? IMO an easy to learn language has very little surprises, is consistent and names things intuitively. Would you say that php as the language is easier to learn than ruby or python?

eik3_de··on What I learned my first time on live TV
Haven't we all seen people being interviewed on TV looking straight into the camera? One should think everyone knows how awkward that looks.

-> Whenever there is a camera, try to ignore it and just talk to the person with the questions

eik3_de··on Denial of Service Attacks
To GitHub and everyone: please use UTC timestamps when there are potential readers outside of your timezone. Since every technical person should know their current UTC difference, calculating the local time is easy.
eik3_de··on Home automation using Node.js, raspberry pi and tinkerforge
I installed Loxone[1] when we built a house and can recommend it. Works right out of the box with web and mobile apps and has multiple APIs to hack with. Only (minor) downside is that you need a VirtualBox for the (otherwise good) configuration software if you're not on Windows.
