eiieirurjdndjd··on Intel kills off the 10nm process?
It seems kind of like how incorrect news about science becomes “common knowledge”. This person probably saw someone else post this, and now they’re just parroting it back. That other person, they might have had it from a news article. Or maybe they were just parroting another comment in turn. Even if it was from the news, was that news sources from a sophisticated engineering perspective, or a bit of marketing fluff? Hard to know. Not saying whether this is correct or incorrect either, just making a comment about the sources of knowledge in general in the age of internet comments.

But it would be pretty quiet on here if people only talked about what they actually know.

eiieirurjdndjd··on Decision Tables
This is probably very difficult, but wouldn’t it be interesting to write a program that generates the minimal function that matches a given decision table? I imagine with current techniques this would only be possible for very simple functions, but the programming workflow if you had such a tool would be neat. Instead of writing a function and tests, you simply write the test, and grow it until the function looks how you want it to.
eiieirurjdndjd··on App Engine’s New Go 1.11 Runtime
I see. I had only looked at the source code of the Nodejs competitor. To be fair the point still stands that you need to read the source to know what is really being measured.
eiieirurjdndjd··on Did Uber steal Google’s intellectual property?
Ah yeah just so you know there is a lot more to building a self driving car system than the general knowledge held in the head of the lead engineer. It is unlikely that he would have known even a tenth of the systems involved in the waymo program at a level of detail required to quickly replicate them.
eiieirurjdndjd··on App Engine’s New Go 1.11 Runtime
https://benchmarksgame-team.pages.debian.net/benchmarksgame/...

It’s fifty percent faster than the competing java program.

eiieirurjdndjd··on App Engine’s New Go 1.11 Runtime
I actually looked at this before making my other comment. You’re absolutely right about the salt. One of the go benchmarks is basically pure cgo using vector intrinsics. It naturally blows idiomatic JS out of the water. So you might get those kind of results if that’s the kind of code you’re going to write, but it’s far from what I consider idiomatic. Another language’s proponent would be fair to point out that most languages have C FFIs.
eiieirurjdndjd··on App Engine’s New Go 1.11 Runtime
Nodejs might also be a good option. It’s comparable to go on a core for core basis, and IIRC GOMAXPROCS is 1 on GAE.
eiieirurjdndjd··on Brain pollution: Evidence builds that dirty air causes Alzheimer’s, dementia
You shouldn’t read “causes” as “is the exclusive cause of” pretty much ever.
eiieirurjdndjd··on Brain pollution: Evidence builds that dirty air causes Alzheimer’s, dementia
It’s probably more that people getting dementia now received damage 20-30 years ago which took time to manifest. That and varying diagnostic criteria and other variables like fitness.
eiieirurjdndjd··on The man who dodged the Dogecoin
“Despite retail investors losing millions” hrm? Nobody has been losing millions lately.
eiieirurjdndjd··on The Big List of RPG Plots
It does bear some similarity to tv tropes. One thing I really like about this list is how focused it is. It’s nothing but high level plot points. No digression, and nothing really obscure. Pretty much any good guys and bad guys story is going to contain at least one of these archetypes. TVTropes is great for many things, but it is not quite as compact as this list.
eiieirurjdndjd··on “So the silence from Facebook over the weekend is.. deafening.”
I’m tech literate and they don’t phase me either. Why would they? My business is already in the streets. What does it matter if one more company leaks my personal info?
eiieirurjdndjd··on Ask HN: Anyone from Google here? The new Gmail UI is painful
Because no one uses it.
eiieirurjdndjd··on Ask HN: Anyone from Google here? The new Gmail UI is painful
> Where would they get that data?

The gmail product forums, monitoring sites like reddit, HN, and Twitter, focus groups and UX studies, internal dogfooders and trusted external testers, metrics from experimental or holdback groups, etc.

eiieirurjdndjd··on Ask HN: Anyone from Google here? The new Gmail UI is painful
Same. I’m actually at google but I’m not going to tell the gmail team about this post because

1. I don’t agree with it, and

2. Gmail team is already painfully aware that any given change will be unappealing to a subset of users.

3. They are probably already here, taking note, considering.

Unfortunately we can’t all have a custom UI written exactly to our specifications. Gmail team has to try to do what they think is best for most users. For the rest, there are various gmail UI tweak extensions for Chrome and Firefox, or you can write your own userscript or use an IMAP client.

eiieirurjdndjd··on People Like You More Than You Know
I don’t think that everyone feels how the person in the article does. But from talking to my friends, most people think less of themselves, socially, than they think of others.
eiieirurjdndjd··on People Like You More Than You Know
I need this taped on the ceiling above my bed, to my door, to my office, etc.
eiieirurjdndjd··on Solid-state battery startup claims breakthrough for electric vehicles
Could be real, but I’m not sure how much signal investment gives. Even without theranos level fraud, investors throw money at long shots all the time.
eiieirurjdndjd··on New insights on pesticide exposure and autism
Presumably they at least controlled for age race and socioeconomic level. If they didn’t then the results are very suspicious.
eiieirurjdndjd··on New insights on pesticide exposure and autism
If they had studied number of mosquito bites received and the probability of autism, would they have gotten the same result? Or if they studied outdoor air temperature during pregnancy and autism, would they have seen a link? Probably ... so be careful about assuming causality here.
eiieirurjdndjd··on EU to move ahead with cultural quotas for streaming services
Depends on exactly what the rule is. If the rule is something like, “any view where the customer is choosing a movie to watch, you have to show at least thirty percent local films,” Netflix would not need to trim the catalogue. They could just repeat the same ten Belgian films on every page. #ThanksEU
eiieirurjdndjd··on What Do Happy Teens Do?
To be satisfied means having one’s own needs or desires met. What we are optimizing for, in this case, is people’s self-reported evaluation of their own value function.

That being said, I think there is merit to your second point, although I don’t believe we have enough evidence to know.

eiieirurjdndjd··on BuzzFeed News Asks Readers to Chip in with Donations
Hrm. In hindsight, it seems obviously preferable that the public got to view this dossier. It would have been hard to have an informed opinion about e.g. the Strozk situation without knowing about the dossier and it’s contents.
eiieirurjdndjd··on BuzzFeed News Asks Readers to Chip in with Donations
I don’t know. This represents a kind of Coaseian solution for the provision of a public good. There’s nothing wrong with alternative funding models. Another example which we don’t see much of in the us is direct government funding of media, which has had good results in a few places.
eiieirurjdndjd··on Ethical OS and Silicon Valley’s Guilty Conscience
> That's indeed the traditional rationale for MAD and the development of nerve gas, biological weapons, and hydrogen bombs. The problem with this argument is that anybody can use it, the argument appears just as sound to North Korea than to the US, and is leading to a world-wide stockpiling of dangerous technologies.

But that’s not what happened, right? I mean, it is if you stop reading history just before the first non-proliferation treaties began being implemented. This was almost half a century ago, though, so IMO it doesn’t make sense to stop reading at that point.

eiieirurjdndjd··on Microsoft Bug Testers Unionized, Then They Were Dismissed
Not interested, personally. I can only picture being made worse off by being in a union. Fortunately, it’s insanely difficult to get well-paid ambitious people to join a union, so there is little danger I’ll come closer to experiencing a tech workers union than reading about the idea in impractical internet comments.
