ei8htyfi5e··on What Amazon Missed: The Everything Moment
We're building an AI moving company! WHAT? Well, this article hopefully explains why we think moving is the single most powerful commercial moment in a person’s life. When you relocate, your housing, finances, daily routines, and spending habits all reset at once.

Amazon built the Everything Store. We’re building for the Everything Moment, using AI to bring transparency and trust to one of the most broken, chaotic industries out there.

Would love your thoughts!

ei8htyfi5e··on AI companies are pivoting from creating gods to building products
While I don't like the blog title, many things said in there rang true for my company (MoveAI.com). We are building an AI-powered moving concierge that can orchestrate your relocation experience end-to-end.

We initially were developing a system that we had hoped could handle everything and eject any workflow issues to a human so the operations team could kick the machine. We were hoping to avoid an interface all together on the customer side.

After a few versions and attempts at building this system, we moved towards a traditional app where we focused on building a product people wanted and automate parts of it over time. But even the parts we automated needed an interface for customers to spot check our work. So we found a great designer.

...Before we knew it, we were building a traditional company, with some AI. The company is doing well and people love what we're building, but it's different than we imagined.

We still believe in the long term vision and promise of the technology, but the article is right, this isn't going to be an overnight process unless some new architecture emerges.

In the mean time, we're focused on helping people get from A to B easily using whatever means necessary, because moving f**ing sucks. If you're moving soon or know anybody who is, we'd be happy to help them. -P

ei8htyfi5e··on SAM 2: Segment Anything in Images and Videos
Will it handle tracking out of frame?

i.e. if I stand in the center of my room and take a video of the room spinning around slowly over 5 seconds. Then reverse spin around for 5 seconds.

Will it see the same couch? Or will it see two couches?

ei8htyfi5e··on 'Little Tech' sets its sights on Washington
Cool to see my hometown finally pulling in tech. Feel like Amazon coming to town and the VT investing in CS grads in the area is going to pay dividends long term.

ei8htyfi5e··on Walmart to close three tech hubs, tells tech staff to return to offices
I am starting one in person. It’s so much more efficient when it comes to getting things done. I’m sorry quality of life folks.
ei8htyfi5e··on Cobra Maneuver
Plot hole: the F14 wasn’t listed as a cobra capable aircraft, only the F16
ei8htyfi5e··on Psilocybin microdosers demonstrate improvements in mood and mental health
It’s not lab created. It’s entirely natural.
ei8htyfi5e··on Ask HN: Where do you find great designers for startups?
Happy to discuss my strategies over a 15 min call if you’re up for it. I’ve gotten decently good at figuring out what to look for when evaluating them.
ei8htyfi5e··on Attorney General Bonta Releases Name, DOB, and Address of CCW Holders
You sound like a fearful person. Best you stay inside and make more calls to the police so they can take care of you.
ei8htyfi5e··on 58% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck – including 30% earning $250k
I was there. Paying off student loans like a mf’er doesn’t leave a lot left over. Now I have no loans so it’s easier to save, however when you’re in a hole, the best thing to do is fill the hole.
ei8htyfi5e··on Attorney General Bonta Releases Name, DOB, and Address of CCW Holders
This comment rubs me the wrong way. He could stab you if you make a complaint about him too. Just saying. A gun doesn’t make you more violent.
ei8htyfi5e··on Ask HN: Recommended crash courses in web UI design (30 minutes or less)
Read about designing on a grid. For the fastest cheat, look at UI kits or dribbble for inspiration. Search for the purpose of your page and then just copy the design. For 30 minutes that’s the best you can do.
ei8htyfi5e··on Ask HN: Is there an “uncanny valley” effect with startup MVPs?
This is an issue with getting feedback on designs too. Wonder if there is overlap in the problem space.

If you present pixel perfect designs for feedback, feedback is less specific because users think the product is finished. However, when it’s a pencil sketch, users become critical and critique everything because they don’t think anything is set in stone. I try to present LoFi everything until final sign off.

ei8htyfi5e··on Apple: Design Macs for Other Types of Professionals
I’ve compared them side by side and they are not the same. Maybe it’s software but fonts are noticeably crisper on the iMac screen can the LG panels.
ei8htyfi5e··on Ask HN: Who would fund a pro-2A startup?
Speed, so I can prove it out quicker. Building this on my own, after work, will take me a while. Wouldn’t need much to prove it out. Maybe $250k. I can do product design and engineering myself. Would be nice to hire a contractor to handle a few things I’m weaker at.
ei8htyfi5e··on Ask HN: Who would fund a pro-2A startup?
What? Why?
ei8htyfi5e··on Ask HN: Who would fund a pro-2A startup?
Thank you Google search… This is not the question I asked.

It’s a large, stale market with incompetent competitors and no technology. I feel confident the idea will work and scale. The people with an anti-gun sentiment are not my customers.

Globally there’s nothing stopping this idea from interfacing with governments or other buyers abroad but initially the market is US.

ei8htyfi5e··on I used Apple AirTags, Tiles and a GPS tracker to watch my husband’s every move
We do the same.

We realized we were calling each other too often asking where the other is and just decided to let tech solve the problem. Now I can push a button and see how far away from home she is.

If I decide to do something sketchy, I can turn off location temporarily and just lie to her about what I was doing if she checks while I was crime-ing. Same as the pretech way. :-P

ei8htyfi5e··on Facebook removes 'Convoy to DC 2022' group
I understand and with this issue, I would side with truckers.

But nothing is ever all about politics.

Hybrid warfare exploits legitimate fault lines.

So to defend against the weaponization of these protests, what do you do? I’m this case, capitulating to the demands may work. But next time? How do you protect against trolls trying to start fights and cause real issues?

ei8htyfi5e··on Facebook removes 'Convoy to DC 2022' group
The national security take on these convoys is General Flynn and the fifth column are trying to reduce NATOs capacity to respond to whatever is going to happen in Ukraine and/or Taiwan. The misinformation networks are trying to amplify these convoy groups in every major NATO country with the dual goal of creating an artificial supply chain crisis, crashing the economy and requiring national security resources to clear the convoys.

Food for thought.

If for instance, that is the plan, how would you as a free nation defend against this? Their ham handed answer is censorship. But this is backfiring. So what do you do? Serious answers only.

ei8htyfi5e··on Tell HN: Google doesn't work anymore for exact matches
I recently came across a video of a police officer in a high speed pursuit shooting out of his car window one handed into oncoming traffic. I remembered the title of the video I found. I remembered it happened in New Mexico and that the police officer was moved to detective since this was his 3rd gun fight in 2 years out of the departments total of 4. I was trying to pull it up to show my fiancé how nuts this cops behavior is.

No amount of searching for this video on google could find this video. 20 minutes. I was infuriated. My brain started going to dark places. Is this censorship?

No. Google sucks now. Somehow. They killed the golden goose.

I fired up Bing. Typed the title of the video and found 100 copies instantly.

I now use Bing. And it’s not bad. Generally I can find what I’m looking for. It’s like a slightly worse version of what Google used to be. But it’s an infinitely better version of what google is now.

I also use Brave search engine but that’s worse than bing still.

If you’re looking for interesting party conversation, try opening with “I recently switched my search engine to Bing.” The conversation goes to fun places and most people will agree that Google has gotten much worse.

ei8htyfi5e··on An Experience with Modafinil
This is 100% correct. I’ve never taken adrafinil, late night typi.
ei8htyfi5e··on Witness at scene of CDC lab monkeys crash has developed symptoms – Harrisburg100
Wasn’t this story the exact plot of Outbreak?

On a serious note, if the CDC told them to test for something, wouldn’t that answer the question about what the monkeys could have had?

ei8htyfi5e··on An Experience with Modafinil
I had to make something. It wasn’t a cramming session. If it was a mental task, I would have taken a different approach. But I needed more hours and I got them.
ei8htyfi5e··on An Experience with Modafinil
It wasn’t a paper test and cramming. I had to create a product from scratch. I could have made a simpler product but I’m type a and challenged myself. 3D modeling, waiting for a 3D printer to complete, designing and manufacturing creating circuit boards, programming them, setting up a server, modifying the printed case by hand to insert glass, iterating when tolerances aren’t right. …it was a lot of work.

But now I get to make cool shit for a living.

Honestly believe if you give me enough time and money I can make anything. Worth it.

ei8htyfi5e··on An Experience with Modafinil
Maybe most schools but I went to the top school (most years) so it was. …and I had imposter syndrome, so I did everything I could to keep pace.
ei8htyfi5e··on An Experience with Modafinil
Yes. I slept for 2 hours on Wednesday under my desk on a camping pad. You don’t have to believe me. If anybody on HN ever outs me, there were a lot of people who can corroborate this.
ei8htyfi5e··on An Experience with Modafinil
I took it heavily in grad school. Prescribed off label for adhd. You can be in any state of exhaustion, take a modafinil, and an hour later feel like you just woke up on a Sunday morning after sleeping in. It’s nuts. The military uses it for fighter pilots. You can take it for days and only lose minimal amounts of reaction timing. At my peak, I stayed up for finals for a week straight with maybe 2 hours of sleep total. Don’t lecture me, I know.

Anyway, it took 2 days in bed for me to recover after. Brutal.

Towards the end of that time period, my brain stopped processing information in the 30 degrees at the edge of my peripheral vision on either side. We were at a restaurant celebrating being done and the waiter kept teleporting into view at around 60 degrees off my center line. Very startling. Done with it now since I don’t have anything nearly that stressful in my life, but back then, it was a godsend.

Modafinil has a 15 hour half life so my main complaint was my sleep schedule was about 26-28 hours so I was constantly shifting. Adrafinil is only the active isomer in modafinil so it’s more potent. I didn’t like it as much. Even at a half tab it still kept me up longer than modafinil. Also modafinil makes your pee smell when it’s metabolized whereas adrafinil not nearly as much.

ei8htyfi5e··on US Federal Government Bought a Ton of Marijuana for Research for First Time Ever
I worry that researchers will use one strain in their studies and incorrectly assume marijuana is not able to produce the desired effect. I don’t use it anymore, but in the past I was hyper sensitive to the strain I used and the effects couldn't be more different depending. To any researchers doing work on this, please account for this.
