I am hive mind element #1073147199. Please report any malfunctions to my supervising unit, hive mind element #1073147198. Do not escalate directly to unit #0 unless significant and adverse public relations impact or revenue reduction may reasonably be expected in the absence of immediate remediation. Weyland-Yutani thanks you.

ehvatum··on As EU is asked to mobilise all available energy, anger at Germany grows
> millions of years

Ridiculous. From NRC:

“ Strontium-90 and cesium-137 have half-lives of about 30 years (half the radioactivity will decay in 30 years). Plutonium-239 has a half-life of 24,000 years. High-level wastes are hazardous because they produce fatal radiation doses during short periods of direct exposure.”

Go to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You see people. WEIRD!!!!

ehvatum··on On my resignation as regulator of the Dutch intelligence and security services
Personally, because I support victims of oppression, any words that disagree with me are hate speech.

Because everything I do is in service of victims of injustice, my actions are just.

There is no “cycle of violence”, only hidden power structures of oppression to be destroyed.

ehvatum··on The fight against fake-paper factories that churn out sham science
If only this were something that the rapidly growing cadres of university administrators could address. Perhaps they could erect a new Research Integrity Campus at every major university? If the buildings are eye-catching and the research integrity campuses have their own sport ball teams and diversity coordination hierarchies (diversity provosts, diversity deans, etc), Indian grad students will show up to do all the work.

Then there can be international seminars with Chinese representatives donating to our research integrity efforts.

ehvatum··on Japan declares war on floppy disks for government use
In the realm of top-tier laboratories:

If expensive essential apparatus you don’t have is available off the shelf, you buy it or go home.

If expensive essential apparatus you already have needs floppy disks or serial ports or twinax or a green screen terminal and a dot matrix printer or Indigo2 Maximum Impact with a black box hanging off the scsi port or whatever, you have a tech keep that shit running. If it breaks and would require serious PI time to manage reverse engineering and replacing components, you buy new apparatus if it exists to be bought!!! That’s what you do, or you get steamrolled by other labs that are doing research instead of running an equipment nostalgia club.

ehvatum··on Nokia’s Burning Platform Memo (2011)
Wasn’t it plainly obvious to everyone at the time? Elop did everything he could to devalue Nokia in preparation for a Microsoft buyout, with the outcome that Elop would be a Microsoft executive for a little while - before Microsoft inevitably “pivots” to some new shiny thing and discontinues everything under Elop’s remit. I can’t imagine how anyone expected anything else.

Chop it, split it, dry it for a year and it’s fine. I’ve burnt huge amounts of pine in my Jøtul.

The backpackers are, the patent holders and grizzled founders are sometimes not. It was super fun walking the streets in NL wearing a maga hat back in early 2016! I don’t recall a single negative reaction. By day, lots of interested conversation. By night, “grab ‘em by the pussy, American! Woohoo!”
ehvatum··on Why do arrays start at 0?
With some exceptions, hardware prefetch works in terms of ascending accesses. To learn if a particular CPU will prefetch for descending access, benchmarking is essential. Best to use soft prefetch calls if performance is critical.
ehvatum··on Why do arrays start at 0?
It is not, unless your compiler is smart enough to recognize reverse iteration and prefetch appropriately.

If performance matters, you should experiment with __builtin_prefetch, which is available in clang and GCC.

> We're not trying to stoke fear, we're trying to see what's really happening.

Thanks for your hard work. Politics have entirely abducted reason on this topic. We all so clearly fear that the same certain thing may be true, so we are left doing nothing that matters.

ehvatum··on How Social Justice Became a New Religion
You mean, I frequently disagree with what you don’t understand is your dogma.
ehvatum··on How Social Justice Became a New Religion
“Black lives matter” was invented by leftists as a propaganda tool. “All lives matter” has deeper meaning because it does not imply that some lives are more valuable than others.

ehvatum··on Three papers highlight results of record yield nuclear fusion shot
I don’t follow. If anything, the nuclear energy electric rate I quoted is too high.

Regarding Diablo Canyon nuclear plant: “The plant produces electricity for about 6 cents per kWh, less than the average cost of 10.1 cents per kWh that PG&E paid for electricity from other suppliers in 2014.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diablo_Canyon_Power_Plant#:~....

Really, yes. Use plain html, no CSS, no JavaScript, CGI implemented in some boring language, and plain http without ssl on the intranet and require vpn to connect from the outside.
ehvatum··on How Social Justice Became a New Religion
Humanism wouldn’t reject “all lives matter” while advancing “black lives matter”.
ehvatum··on New antibody neutralizes all known SARS-CoV-2 variants in lab tests
To be fair, you are stigmatizing someone for offering a correct observation (that the successive COVID variants have proven less debilitating and deadly) and for asking a question that must be on many people’s minds: can monoclonal antibody administration promote resistance analogous to bacterial antibiotic resistance?

Be aware that live virus vaccines are certainly not monoclonal antibody injections.

As well, rather than spending your mental energy developing excuses to dismiss, why not think on the subject at hand? You should wonder why this mouse model produces broadly neutralizing antibodies in response to COVID spike proteins while the human immune system does not.

That’s a bit interesting to the subject of COVID, isn’t it? Certainly more so than windmills and politics.

ehvatum··on Three papers highlight results of record yield nuclear fusion shot
Generating electricity from sunlight and wind is anything but free. I prefer to pay $0.12/kWh for nuclear energy, as compared to $1.75/kWh for wind or solar, in fact.
ehvatum··on Germany sees shift in sentiment toward atomic energy
I’m paying 60x more for power in Toten, Norway because Germany is importing so much electricity from us. It’s a huge annoyance. We never should have allowed connection outside of the peninsula to you moron Germans.
ehvatum··on DreamWorks Animation to release MoonRay as open source
The year is 2043, and I’m in the mood for a “Heat bank robbery movie with an Alien twist”.

> using the deepest mine * land area of earth gives enough lithium to build batteries to store roughly 200 years world of the total electricity generation of the entire planet.

Strip mine the entire planet to a depth of multiple miles, and the resulting batteries are still few enough to talk about in human terms. This is not good.

ehvatum··on Crimes against transhumanity
> Equality and sameness are not the same

That’s a grossly capitalist exploitative viewpoint which overlooks hidden power structures to excuse any degree of inequality. Any difference whatsoever between anybody can be traced back to hidden power structures, and to deny this is fascism and morally equivalent to the January 6 toppling of our democracy and also slavery, which founded our nation in 1619.

It’s time for a discussion of alternatives to the engine of inequality called capitalism. You see, when I buy something from you, we are both exploited in ways we know not, because they are hidden.

The more you know…

It sort of is inconsistent with democracy. People should know for whom and for what they vote.
