I am hive mind element #1073147199. Please report any malfunctions to my supervising unit, hive mind element #1073147198. Do not escalate directly to unit #0 unless significant and adverse public relations impact or revenue reduction may reasonably be expected in the absence of immediate remediation. Weyland-Yutani thanks you.

Everybody forgets about tardigrades, but they will be here when we are long passed from all memory.
ehvatum··on How America's universities became debt factories
The profit motive reliably exposes brokenness. What changed to make loans for useless activity profitable? Normally, a loan for useless activity wouldn’t be issued, because of the expectation that it wouldn’t be repaid.

I feel the same way about the Barkley Marathons. What was once a soulful, austere and obscure contest against time and nature is now become a Roman orgy of decadence with contestants hauled about on opulent palanquins and all manner of one-wheeled contraption. It used to be special. If drugs were taken, they were not enjoyed. Hacker News became aware of the marathons, and now it’s only a matter of time until old Lazarus Lake is blowing that conch shell on stage with Taylor Swift, I tell you.

ehvatum··on How the electricity markets respond to a nuclear trip
Nuclear power derives its energy from the binding energy of ultra-heavy atomic nuclei, not fossil fuels. This energy can then be used to power electric cars, avoiding fossil fuel consumption. Furthermore, unlike wind and solar energy, nuclear power generation is not tied to the vagaries of weather, meaning that it doesn’t require burning millions of cubic meters of natural gas every overcast, calm day. For this reason, Russia historically was the largest single benefactor of Germany’s green euphoria: it prolongs fossil fuel reliance.

So often, emotional thinking leads to conclusions that are opposed to reality. You really have to watch out for it, if you want good results.

ehvatum··on US Supreme Court allows cities to ban homeless camps
You’re not going to be any happier with the circumstances of people living in enormous urban housing projects.

You should want a society where we are all rewarded for looking after each other, in the ways we are each best at. Nothing else can work.

ehvatum··on US Supreme Court allows cities to ban homeless camps
Yeah, a shelter is only truly a shelter if you don’t pay for it. Paying for a home is the very definition of homelessness, after all.

Very clearly, you haven’t been to a NASCAR race or monster truck rally in at least a decade. Not many oligarchs. Lots of kids.
ehvatum··on US drug control agency will move to reclassify marijuana
Your implied point that prices will drop with the introduction of interstate competition and access to finance and interest by mega-corps is well taken. You are certainly correct, there.

Notwithstanding grey-market limitations, people have their motives for accepting the inefficiency of starting or staying small. Potential, for example.

ehvatum··on US drug control agency will move to reclassify marijuana
What SMB has the luxury of being notoriously unproductive? Economies of scale are very real and tend to make larger businesses more efficient, it's true, but you'll find that causes SMBs to be lean and mean to remain competitive.
ehvatum··on Elon Musk and X to fight Australian order to remove Sydney stabbing content
The old twitter had a vigorous compliance team that slavishly obeyed government requests, particularly the ones that involved secret court orders. Most of those people were wiped out in the first round of layoffs. The new Twitter has no such team nor impulse and ignores censorship requests, fighting them only when the courts get involved.

> All that matters is purchasing committees are ok

Large enterprise purchasing committees are foremost concerned with risk, you absolute dolt.

The risk that price will jump 12x, requiring all kinds of scrambling, is fucking awful.

I don’t know what planet you’re from, but you gotta stop acting like it’s this one.

For my part, certainly. It's an important part of how I keep emotional liabilities out of the company.
ehvatum··on Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger: I hope to build chips for Lisa Su and AMD
“ That raises the question of how the company would deal with competitors that are armed with its very own technology - and perhaps beating Intel's own internal product teams with better processor designs. While Gelsinger didn't answer my entire question, he certainly gave us plenty to ponder.”

Oh, I can tell you: by slow-walking the production of superior competition and demanding ever more money for the privilege, until the competition gets the message and gets lost. Then, Intel sues to stop 3rd party production, because it’s using Intel’s IP.

If you expect anything else, I have a bridge to sell you.

ehvatum··on F1 rejects Andretti bid to bring new US-based team to grid by 2026
F1’s reasoning is “Andretti won’t be competitive and Andretti’s reputation will benefit more than ours if he has an F1 team”

Yeah, just like being a perennial loser did so much good for the Williams legend, right?

Or similar to how winning nothing in F1 for years really buoyed Ferrari’s brand, I suppose?

I would like to know the actual reason for the rejection, given that the stated reasons are transparently false.

ehvatum··on Alaska CEO: We found many loose bolts on our Max planes
Because building planes is an engineering task.

Let’s use your argument: Would you hire a lawyer to captain a ship? Why not? It’s not like the captain actually steers the ship or oils the engine.

> unless said robot is specifically designed to be almost completely incapable of applying any force to any parts of a human body

Be careful, but don’t beat yourself up over it. Many CNC milling shops regularly run jobs that cannot succeed without a human gripping the workpiece to control vibration.

The folks I really worry about are the waterjet cowboys. The garnet particles that lend a waterjet the power to cut titanium get embedded inches from the site of the wound, if that stream touches skin. Amputation one or two joints up from the wound is standard treatment.
