eh9··on Why Google and Apple work to snuff out the mobile web
I started in the web and had to move to native when the feature gap between platforms got too great to ignore and customers started demanding native experiences.

React Native made this a little easier, but it definitely did not mean “write once, run anywhere”. (It’s more like, write a half that runs everywhere and another half that’s split between your target platforms)

After using RN a bunch, I’ve found there are times when it shines and other times when it’s best to defer to the native language, but I keep using RN because it reminds me most of what I love about the web:

The best “write it once run anywhere” platform I’ve used to date.

You’re right. It’s not worse in any way shape or quantifiable form. Your kind is just easily scared.

Just… fine? Spend the money they spend on police on housing and maybe things look closer to Germany.

Seriously though, how are things even remotely worse with less policing?

Idk bud. I think you’re in a bubble. I happen to be brown. Maybe that skews my sample.

I don’t think so. In this specific instance, the cops particularly sucked. This shop wasn’t hurting anyone and based on the lines out the door they were providing a much wanted service for the community.

I thought the donut munchers were supposed to serve and protect? Whose interests were being served and protected?

Fuck the police. It’s still considered murder if a cop did it.

eh9··on Legal use of hallucinogenic mushrooms begins in Oregon
I wasn’t aware I was taking a revolutionary stance. This is a common sentiment in my community.

There’s a shop in Portland that just got busted for selling shrooms out of a storefront. They were selling for a while, but then they started advertising on a billboard and the pigs(ACAB) shut it down.

I would love it if someone explained what they were thinking when they opened a shroom shop right on a Main Street. This happened recently[1].

eh9··on It’s time to repeal the Jones Act
I’m from Puerto Rico and people there have been fighting for this since I can remember.

This disproportionately hurts the poorest people there the most. Groceries are already exorbitantly expensive, doubly so because of this misguided act.

Never mind the fact that Puerto Rico is in the middle of recovering from a Cat1 hurricane that nearly took the island out for a month (power outages still ongoing). While the island should have been prepared for that, it was still in the middle of recovering from Maria (a cat 5 hurricane in 2017).

How much slower has relief been because of the jones act? How much longer can we keep subjecting people to colonialism?

eh9··on Rammstein Get Restraining Order Blocking Viagogo from Reselling Concert Tickets
Well, yeah, but the people paying 10X are probably luckier fans. Fans who can’t afford the scalped price have a momentary chance to buy from a pool of less than 10% of tickets because the events industry still gets the bulk of allotments.
eh9··on Rammstein Get Restraining Order Blocking Viagogo from Reselling Concert Tickets
They’re not the heroes we deserve, but the heroes need.

I’m fascinated by the price discovery problem in concert tickets, but I’m incredibly frustrated by the lack of artist involvement in that system. I usually hate bringing up NFTs and blockchains, but if any industry would benefit from a verified seller market, it could be this one.

It’s not like Bad Bunny (the company, not Benito) is hurting from missing out on the 9X multiple on floor seats, but acts are increasingly dependent on performance revenues to make a living, and they’re largely cut out from that resale market.

eh9··on Coping with Copilot
I love copilot when it gets it right, but I’ve stopped using it because it was missing the slightly obvious suggestions my type system was providing.
eh9··on How to Write a Cover Letter for a Job
No one should have to write cover letters. The model filtering your resume doesn’t care and the person who decides if you get a call probably won’t read it.

eh9··on The new hire who showed up is not the same person we interviewed
Legal knows what they’re doing. Their entire purpose is ensuring the business is free from undue risk. Confronting this man as a liar could unravel a nice little bag of legal hurdles that end up with the company paying this person to settle X or Y claim.

Also, they confronted the evil, but the company had no reason to show their hand and they way they did it keeps them a bit safer from litigation.
