eggsmediumrare··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
The puck can also hit you in the face and break your jaw.
eggsmediumrare··on We built an exceedingly polite AI dog that answers questions about your APIs
I'm suggesting that the boring and menial work making up the majority of your day is, in fact, your job and if it's automated to any meaningful degree, you will be unemployed rather than freed up to do more interesting thing.
eggsmediumrare··on Anyone else witnessing a panic inside NLP orgs of big tech companies?
Your comment seems almost intentionally obtuse... How's them internet and smartphones doing the watershed world changing these days?
eggsmediumrare··on Anyone else witnessing a panic inside NLP orgs of big tech companies?
You're describing feudalism
eggsmediumrare··on We built an exceedingly polite AI dog that answers questions about your APIs
You get paid to log dive.
eggsmediumrare··on Mistakes I made as an engineer, but had to become a manager to see
This is why every time I take a management, I regret it. I don't care about any business and I'm beginning to suspect I'm incapable of caring about any aspect of the job other than the wellbeing of the people on my team.
eggsmediumrare··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
Rich techies losing money and having to sell one of their houses is pretty funny. Regular people missing mortgage payments is not funny.
eggsmediumrare··on Launch HN: Second (YC W23) – AI bots that add features to web apps
All the regular programmers like us, working a bit and living our lives, are on the block. People like this guy want to take bread off our tables so he can roll around in even more money, but he has a soul, so he has to rationalize it away. He insults us by saying the work we do is useless grunt work and hypes it up so the less perceptive of us get excited about it.

immortalloom, I think you genuinely believe in what you're doing. But drive through an old factory town and think about it for a bit.

eggsmediumrare··on Bee and butterfly numbers are falling, even in undisturbed forests
It's only been ebbing lately.
eggsmediumrare··on Bee and butterfly numbers are falling, even in undisturbed forests
Same. Milkweed and goldenrod are really beautiful plants.
eggsmediumrare··on Ask HN: Has anyone started over outside of tech?
Picking fruit was my least favourite summer job as a teenager. I have several fruit trees in my yard now and while I love having that as a hobby, I still get pretty sick of picking peaches and that's just after two trees.
eggsmediumrare··on AI simulates hypersonic air battle, offering tactic for winning Mach 11 dogfight
Pilots train dogfights a lot. They're not what you're thinking though. A 1v1 dogfight is over in one or two maneuvers and depends heavily on what kind of planes are involved.
eggsmediumrare··on After death of girl yesterday, 12 more detected with H5N1 bird flu in Cambodia
And if people still go to work.
eggsmediumrare··on After death of girl yesterday, 12 more detected with H5N1 bird flu in Cambodia
Same. There aren't many brief glances at my phone that are seared into my memory, but a notification from DW news on New Year's Day 2019 is one of them.
eggsmediumrare··on After death of girl yesterday, 12 more detected with H5N1 bird flu in Cambodia
If this is indeed human to human transmission, humankind will look very different next fall.
eggsmediumrare··on Teams are becoming smaller
This is much harder to do when you 1) have dependents, 2) are bad at interviewing, 3) don't have time to interview, 4) don't have in-demand skills and/or 5) are not financially stable.
eggsmediumrare··on Childhoods of Exceptional People
Don't we? Or is our culture orders of magnitude bigger and thus the Platos and Mozarts and Hugos go less recognized due to competition from the Kants and Beethovens and Wolfes who are doing their thing at the same time? Did Plato have anything more profound to say than Daniel Kahneman or Sam Harris? Is Tosin Abasi less of a virtuoso than Mozart? How many brilliant writers toil away unrecognized because they can't break through Amazon's stranglehold on self-publishing?
eggsmediumrare··on Consultancies know less than they claim and cost more than they seem to
The comment I was replying to seemed to be suggesting that both inexperience AND checklists are the problem. Checklists are never a bad thing.
eggsmediumrare··on Consultancies know less than they claim and cost more than they seem to
Pilots with 40 years of experience use checklists every time they fly.
eggsmediumrare··on Let Teenagers Sleep
Summer vacation was awesome though.

I don't mean that flippantly. Especially in grader 8/9/10 when summer jobs weren't as common. There are things you don't learn in school, and time for the sake of time is a precious gift.

eggsmediumrare··on Bing AI can't be trusted
I wonder how accurate is relative to your average Joe's everyday experience with plain ol' google
eggsmediumrare··on Are we racing toward AI catastrophe?
This might sound weird, but I don't want to be more productive. Not unless I'm compensated for it and we all know how that goes. I don't understand the HN crowd who are excited about productivity gains... Unless you're a founder, all it means is you can make more money for someone else while simultaneously taking bread off your now-redundant co-worker's table.
eggsmediumrare··on Are we racing toward AI catastrophe?
I suspect a good many of us have mortgages, yes
eggsmediumrare··on Are we racing toward AI catastrophe?
An argument could be made that they're not though
eggsmediumrare··on Problems facing Bing, Bard, and the future of AI search
I asked it the names of its creators and it linked me to Spotify lol. That being said, smooth interface. Nice work.
eggsmediumrare··on My employer is reneging on its remote-work promise
They've increased their effective hourly rate and, given that they haven't been fired, the company seems to be fine with it. What's not to like? Sounds like you should take notes.
eggsmediumrare··on One common behavior seen in “mature” software engineers
I'm a bootcamper and I only nest if statements 4 levels deep.
eggsmediumrare··on Google testing ChatGPT-like chatbot 'Apprentice Bard' with employees
I really think in <10 years it will be trivially easy for a single programmer to ask the AI for that code and move on to the next ticket after 10 minutes while earning $30/h accounting for inflation because productivity gains will have eliminated not only most programming jobs, but also the corresponding high wages.
eggsmediumrare··on YouTube has become the world's nanny
Parenting is a many person job but we've decided to incorrectly model our society around the idea that it's a <=2 person job.
eggsmediumrare··on How we plan to de-extinct the Dodo bird
Spoken like someone who doesn't spend much time outside. Something can be worth saving for its own sake.
