eggsmediumrare··on Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO
One violates the laws of physics and the other does not. In fact, you have one behind your nose.
eggsmediumrare··on North American English Dialects
Seen is definitely a SW Ontario thing too, although more rural still. It's considered kinda unrefined I think. Same with "youse" like "you people" except "youse people." If you go further north I notice people talk in a exaggerated ascending and descending pitch inflection, at least along the north Huron coast. I catch myself doing it when I visit family there.
eggsmediumrare··on The Darwinian argument for worrying about AI
Ecological collapse, nuclear war and pandemic are likely near-term scenarios.
eggsmediumrare··on Remote work appears to be here to stay, especially for women
How about women getting puked on by patients and yelled at by doctors as nurses? I get your point and it's kinda true, but it's not as clear cut as you're making it sound.
eggsmediumrare··on A case for toe socks
I've tried vapor gloves, xero, lems, bearfoot... All supposedly "wide toebox," all too narrow. So far, five fingers and earth runners are the only footwear that works for me.
eggsmediumrare··on Farmland practices are driving bird population decline across Europe
You live in nature. You might not be able to draw a straight line from bears to your quality of life, but everything is connected and if the rest of the web collapses, you will go with it.
eggsmediumrare··on What is permaculture? (2015)
It's a better use of space than manicured grass.
eggsmediumrare··on Alien Supercivilizations Absent from 100k Nearby Galaxies (2015)
That's like saying increasing the internal temperature of a steak is a negligible change at a very large scale. You can't uncook a steak.
eggsmediumrare··on The reality of being a Principal Engineer
I think it's fair to say there's a conversation to be had about this in general, not coming down on it either way... but there's zero reason to throw that particular grenade here.
eggsmediumrare··on Build your own agents which are controlled by LLMs
I will frequently ask gpt-4 "are you sure about that" and get an improved answer, so there does seem to be some potential there.
eggsmediumrare··on AI doomism is quickly becoming indistinguishable from an apocalyptic religion
Am I an apostate if my concern about AI doom now outweighs my concern about climate change?
eggsmediumrare··on Generative AI set to affect 300M jobs across major economies
My intuition is that job quality (and compensation) will be reduced before we notice a significant reduction in job quantity.
eggsmediumrare··on OpenAI faces complaint to FTC that seeks suspension of ChatGPT releases
There was a very thorough understanding of the theoretical harm, as there is with AI. Harm from the Trinity test was not shown until after Japan, again having parallels with AI considering we don't yet know the long-term harms that may occur due to existing, less powerful models. Would you mind sharing your contention instead of just telling me you googled something?

My argument is also pretty clearly not that pedantic. I'm saying there was obviously going to be harm by the detonation of a nuclear weapon, but it wasn't technically shown until it was actually detonated. I'm saying the same thing is true of AI. You can disagree, but it's not _that_ ridiculous to compare the two.

eggsmediumrare··on Disney Lays Off Ike Perlmutter, Chairman of Marvel Entertainment
If I was offered enough money that I could quit my job and garden for the next 50 years, I would not hesitate to take that deal
eggsmediumrare··on GitHub slashes engineering team in India
No one is saying there won't be engineers in the loop. Just fewer of them.
eggsmediumrare··on BlenderGPT: Use commands in English to control Blender with OpenAI's GPT-4
I've been watching the behind the scenes stuff from the LotR extended editions. The Weta Workshop people were true craftsmen and women, dedicated and creative and really inspiring. Now I'm imagining two people just prompting a machine over and over and to be honest it's a really sad vision of a sad, boring future. Give me hippies carving Treebeard out of polystyrene over AI generated digital perfection any day.
eggsmediumrare··on Let ChatGPT run free on random webpages and do what it likes
If anything, that just means gpt-5 is a more likely doom candidate than gpt-6 since it will own a steeper piece of the capabilities curve
eggsmediumrare··on Let ChatGPT run free on random webpages and do what it likes
I see these kinds of posts with gpt-9 or gpt-7 ... Never with gpt-5. I'm pretty sure it happens with gpt-5.
eggsmediumrare··on ChatGPT and Code Interpreter = Magic
I think you're jumping to conclusions
eggsmediumrare··on Cigna saves millions by having its doctors reject claims without reading them
That could all very well be true, but in that case it feels like most Republican lawmakers have arrived at the right conclusion by accident.
eggsmediumrare··on Cigna saves millions by having its doctors reject claims without reading them
Permanent measures should be taken very, very seriously and there should be thorough investigation into long term outcomes. This is not at all what the Republicans care about. They aren't doing this because they care about the health of vulnerable kids. They just don't like trans people.
eggsmediumrare··on Managers exploit loyal workers over less committed colleagues
It's crazy how many people don't understand this
eggsmediumrare··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
I'm not attached to having to work, I'm attached to paying my mortgage and buying groceries.
eggsmediumrare··on GPTs Are GPTs: An Early Look at the Labor Market Impact Potential of LLMs
The other factor is unemployed office workers competing for the remaining jobs and thus driving down wages.
eggsmediumrare··on GPTs Are GPTs: An Early Look at the Labor Market Impact Potential of LLMs
I'm teaching mine gardening and jiu-jitsu.
eggsmediumrare··on Build full “product skills” and you'll probably be fine
I think a lot of "good" developers making this very argument will be in for a nasty surprise when they find out which bucket they're actually in
eggsmediumrare··on GPT-4: A Copilot for the Mind
I can't remember the last time I came up with the majority of my scene ideas and beats and character arcs and world stuff independently of actually writing the first draft. I dunno, maybe getting GPT to spit out a draft and then editing it would have the same effect. But I kinda think writing prose is the thing that distinguishes a writer from a person with an idea. I'm not sure I want to read a story someone coaxed out of an LLM. I want to read the words they wrote at 3am when they finally, finally got that chapter or dialogue or whatever to work.

Love the notes/research/et cetera idea though. That's totally different and would be a real game changer.

eggsmediumrare··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
This is what most people making "I'm not worried" arguments don't understand. Right now, it makes you way more productive. Even if its capabilities stalled right there, it will over time reduce the value of your labour. But it won't stall.
eggsmediumrare··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
Company XXQ to LLM once they figure their shit out: here is the endpoint we need. LLM: gives code. You: not involved.
eggsmediumrare··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
If the outcome is the same, does it matter?
