I think if you like polishing things than do so. As far as I could understand, the point is not doing it with the expectation of any recognition.
egeozcan··on EU data shows PHEVs emit 350% more CO2 than tested values
But is it also calculating the depreciation of the battery, which has a totally different lifetime than the rest of the car and causes a lot of emissions? Or is it insignificant?

As a car owner, I wish to see governments to invest in public transport. Cars mean freedom, and I love mine, but we shouldn't really use them for regular routes, like for commuting to work.

You are jumping on a private plane with one of these devices because of some emergency in a data center...

Who are you? What's your job? What kind of choices in life brought you to this point?

I really wonder, it's so alien.

egeozcan··on Interview with Senior JavaScript Developer 2024 [video]
Yes, the reactions to it were not very enthusiastic as you'd expect. Also it did have a11y issues.

There are a lot of interesting renderers for react, some of them are even maintained: https://github.com/chentsulin/awesome-react-renderer

egeozcan··on Interview with Senior JavaScript Developer 2024 [video]
Yes. Perhaps not in the public web but there are so many internal tools using it. It has a lot of issues but the average jQuery UI project is so old that some users will actually complain if you fix bugs because it breaks their workflow (speaking from personal experience)(there was an xkcd for this I think).
egeozcan··on Redis re-implemented with SQLite
You can also create an in-memory sqlite database though.

> Building an accessible canvas-based UI with a React-like API would make a lot more sense for SPAs

React is the Simpsons of web tech (Referring to the "Simpsons did it meme" if that wasn't clear).

Let me introduce you to JSF and the magic templates. Not all old code is equal, and not all JS-heavy projects are bloated.
egeozcan··on Interview with Senior JavaScript Developer 2024 [video]
Those are actually easy. The ones using the first versions of React with custom state management and weird conventions however, are a different story.

Those, and debugging jQuery UI problems.

I digress but in my career of using every technology possible, the pain I had debugging a huge (HUGE) jQuery UI project could perhaps only be matched by trying to make NHibernate (Hibernate ORM but for .NET) behave in some complicated (but CRUD after all) data-heavy projects.

egeozcan··on GPT-4 Turbo with Vision is a step backwards for coding
I guess you can always use AI to detect inappropriate content from users... oh wait.

Seriously though, I understand that these mostly play to the enterprise market where even a hint of anything remotely "unsafe" needs to be shut down and deleted but why can't they allow us to turn off the strict filtering like Google does? Why can Google offer "unsafe" content (in a limited fashion but it's FINE) but LLM providers can't?

Lack of competition?

That's in my experience better than the percentage of although usually good-intentioned but nevertheless unusable PRs popular repositories get.
egeozcan··on Ask HN: What was an interesting project you started and finished over a weekend?
Thanks for the tip, very thoughtless of me. I added a warning.

After reading that, my mind is generating weird scenarios in which undeclared trampolines are causing tragedies.

Trampolines can indeed cause accidents but is that big of a risk to have one? That feels so out of place it's beyond comical.

egeozcan··on Simon Riggs has died
That is tasteless IMHO as well, but please, let's just stop and keep it about him here.

In Germany, particularly in Hesse from what I've experienced, restaurant staff might take offense if you eat less than half of your meal and refuse to have the leftovers packed up. Just last week, a restaurant in Gießen went above and beyond by including an extra bowl of fruit salad alongside the remainder of our meal. That, I will remember a long time, especially after my wife's startling reaction to discovering a kiwi in the package – she's terrified of the fruit for some reason :)
egeozcan··on Show HN: Nano-web – a low latency one binary webserver designed for serving SPAs
Caddy is amazing for simple static hosting AND more, if one needs it. With sqlite, postgres, D3.js and FFmpeg, it's up there in my software love list.
egeozcan··on Show HN: Nano-web – a low latency one binary webserver designed for serving SPAs
Indeed, for a cost-effective approach with a static host, why not generate placeholder HTML files for all valid routes at compile time? Alternatively, using Astro or a similar tool would be a wise choice :)
egeozcan··on Google ordered to identify who watched certain YouTube videos
You don't have to read, and you don't have to watch tv. However that also tells a lot about someone. There's no escape.
egeozcan··on Why is it so hard to build an airport?
But almost everybody wants access to one. This is coming from someone who lived a a kilometer away from the main airport of Istanbul at the time[0], for a long time. I was really disappointed when it was closed as the benefit of access was 100x better than the noise cost.

Of course, everybody has different priorities and getting a huge noise source in your backyard after you decide to call a piece of land your home would be frustrating.

[0]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atat%C3%BCrk_Airport - used to be a very busy airport.

I use gomponents with go, which is very similar. The productivity increase is immense. https://github.com/maragudk/gomponents
egeozcan··on Django REST framework 3.15.0
I have a very similar relationship with .NET MVC + EF. I suppose Django would win against it (them) by a mile in the "batteries included" battle but oh boy was I productive with it, especially with some jQuery and knockout.js for the frontend. I really felt like I could build anything CRUD with the tools I had (I was specialized in system integration) and I had the fortune of getting paid for it. Now even the smallest memory of some of the code I've written back then makes me cringe, but I learned a lot.

From those experiences you not only learn what to do, you get "what not to do" and "ah these parts are useful because of this" kind of information as well.
