efes··on He Was a Hacker for the NSA and He Was Willing to Talk. I Was Willing to Listen
Maybe he didn't want it comming up when HR departments do background checks.. But another possibility is that the real person that corresponds to the leaked messages isnt such a perfect shill, but he can't complain as this PR imposter never claimed to be him.
efes··on Cops can easily get months of location data, appeals court rules
I think a simpler point to make would be that no one should have special standing in the legal system except when issued a specific warrant. If one person can get this data without a warrant, then why would there be any kind of barrier against anyone else requesting this type of data for whichever individuals they feel like investigating/stalking/whatever? If there is a problem with that then someone has a responsibility to protect this data from EVERYONE who lacks a warrant.
efes··on LinkedIn called me a white supremacist because I happen to share a name with one
so his name was misspelled intentionally so linkedin would not inform his lawyer and/or publicist of the article?
efes··on Updating classic workplace sabotage techniques
Any thoughts on leaving Actuarial work? I was thinking of going the other way.. a consistent education/testing seems like it fixes the eternal new wheels and pop experts problem of software as a career.
efes··on Nissan app developer busted for copying code from Stack Overflow
If we are supposed to be the last line of defense against poor English in products on the US market then that explains a lot.
efes··on Nissan app developer busted for copying code from Stack Overflow
“busted” for using code that works without introducing bugs to show you understood It... Whether, let alone how, they violated the license is not a subject of the article. Expecting code review to detect plaigarism is.. Writing code is editing an encyclopedia, not writing poetry.
efes··on US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loans
> The US Marshals enforce (federal) court orders. He was subject to a court order mandating the payment of a debt.

That is itself absurd. As a private person you can really only ask courts to put liens on property (or garnishes on income) to get your money. You essentially must identify specific property you own due to their lack of payment as not paying you isn't a crime.

> It's not like he fell into arrears and they "just showed up". If it was a mortgage debt, or an eviction proceeding, typically it'd be the local sheriff.

No, they interfere to allow property to be taken by its rightful owner as decided by a court. If you don't struggle to stay in a house you are not arrested when evicted.

efes··on Why Xiaomi, Lenovo, and Huawei Can't Compete with Apple
Ah, the threat to iOS is a non-threat because they are immune to their market's Ford Fiesta like Rolls Royce, which was bought out by BMW for lack of marketshare, which is pushing Mini hard for to get back into a larger marketshare before they are out scaled. But all of that is a mistake because BMW is like iOs and iOs proves that dwindling marketshare in a maturing market is irrelevant, like it was for MacOS.

I must be immortal since everyone who is like me has successfully cheated death, and they are immortal because they are like me. :)

efes··on Why Xiaomi, Lenovo, and Huawei Can't Compete with Apple
Market share.
efes··on Why Xiaomi, Lenovo, and Huawei Can't Compete with Apple
I don't know what gives you that idea. Huawei is like a Ford of chinese phones. Just because they have a fiesta doesn't mean they don't also compete with rolls royce at their highest end.

I think the article is giberish because of the marketing feel good about ourselves nonsense: Picture a person who wears a kravat, not sure what a kravat is? See! Apple wont lose their shirt by being unable to compete with the 4 times larger Android marketplace and whatever circuses it spins off. Those markets will be dominated by players like Huawei and will inevitably be putting compatibility pressure on Apple's 20% over time.

Also, Rolls Royce is a little footnote in a more successful company with a larger demographic today which is itself not all that great. That Apple still will have fans is more likely to get them to jump in that shrinking hole of past prestige based pricing like they did for the 1990s.

efes··on Akka, Haskell, Erlang, Go and .NET Core compared on 1M threads
This has no external data so workers may avoid a cache fetch let alone having enough data for regular cache misses. Even a simple strlen call in each worker could begin to add the kind of issues that affect meaningful performance.

How a language handles misses/blocking/threading is more important than what it can do in a perfect cpu only world.

efes··on Investigate switching away from GitHub
> Are those programmers using this operating system's tools for software installation? Hardly. And why?

Because this is a bizarre argument. I accidentally make dependencies on specific variants of libraries because I don't immediately need to support other variants and lack examples and/or time to worry about theoretical portability.

I don't use OS specific packaging because it was intentionally written to be non-portable. My learning it is an irrational commitment to keep using an OS at the neglect of all others and even if its distributor changes (or can no longer honor) the conditions of our deal.

efes··on Apple fans are coming to hate Apple software
I guess you've hurt feelings with sarcasm? But I agree. Virtualization is a bad joke with 8GB of RAM today, so I decided to assume 16GB max isn't enough lifetime for a new system and wont be consuming in the current market.
efes··on I'm Done with Macbooks
True, but I was actually referring to them coming as the only interfaces to the iMac. AFAIK the laptops provide builtin HID, so they don't needlessly become a brick from depending on independent battery backed HID devices.
efes··on I'm Done with Macbooks
Hmm, not sure I get the article. I recently ditched OsX on an iMac and in the past I used Solaris on an apple laptop. In general, I would say that while not cheap for a general intel machine, the core hardware is pretty good and Apple's lack of interest in making a lot of drivers should make them an easy platform for other OSes to prioritize.

The results on linux have remained a little less than ideal. It is a shame to see that graphics card makers still think they can afford to bully us around and I still don't get what apple is thinking with wireless HID. Do a lot of users type from 50 meters away?

efes··on How to Make Your Own NSA Bulk Surveillance System
You need access to LANs themselves to get ethernet addresses which would easily map to people on many devices. De-anonymizing based on traffic in a cafe is going to be a bit more complicated than average for some users and the random passerby who accidentally connects.

Besides, how can I be sure the people I am tracking actually work for the NSA? I refuse to do blanket tracking just to catch a few criminals, that is unethical.

efes··on Facebook at Work
If I were facebook, I would have hid this page for a month or two. I sure hope this causes the most traditional of French mobilizations against finalizing a new data safe harbor given that the ramifications for workers who are essentially unable to object have never been dealt with.

I've found general software contracts to be a questionable thing to involve normal status employees in, cloud services (especially online tests and training) have muddied the water, and with social tool usage in the workplace, I have to wonder if there still is any water.

efes··on Why I'm leaving the R community
Opening a bug about someone's embarrassing double-entendre in a non-native language usage and then asking everyone to comment is bullying and technically sexual harassment. Not wanting to be accidentally thrown into the situation of having made a statement that is misinterpreted as a sexual taboo isn't just a problem for particular genders.

Its all very fun to build pet theories about the reason for a lack of gender diversity, but doing it in official tools by casting attention on an individual for what is a really a random consequence of language that only a native speaker would even notice is the juvenile nonsense very similar to the problem to supposedly be weeded out. I would absolutely consider banning someone's access to official tools who did this with them, particularly when they clearly understood the actual situation.

If you aren't for a dedicated slang usage, then you also just let the proper usage stand when it accidentally still occurs or you at least don't make a fuss about your choice to change it. I don't even have kids, yet I know this very basic rule of not re-enforcing the power and humiliation of swears.

efes··on Why I care about Firefox OS fading away
If you write a free application that runs on Java on the raspberry Pi you (probably) owe Oracle nothing. If anyone builds a console around that raspberry Pi, Oracle probably is owed money because the device is no longer a general machine. That is very different than chromium or anything else that is license compatible with your typical Linux distribution.

Whether or not someone owed damages is immaterial to the problem of trying to get everyone an appropriate license who might want to run your software in contexts you haven't imagined yet.

efes··on Why I care about Firefox OS fading away
> This might as well be Java.

Chromium specific certainly isn't as good as open standards, but it isn't as bad as Java. Once chromium is ported to something it doesn't face legal uncertainty.

efes··on Is France's AZERTY keyboard heading for the scrapheap?
Cool, thanks! I'll do a little practice and then jump in to immersion at the start of my next vacation then. I just tried a little using an onscreen keyboard as a cheat, and it doesn't really feel all that different from learning chorded keyboard.

At least for me, I the sense of physical fatigue is about the stress of dealing with the higher degrees of freedom on a regular keyboard together with the location memory task. But needing a chorded keyboard seems like a bridge to far in a work environment.

efes··on Is France's AZERTY keyboard heading for the scrapheap?
very cool, thanks! Composing the other accents actually works well for me since I use them infrequently but just frequently enough to get annoyed if there is no system in their placement.
efes··on Is France's AZERTY keyboard heading for the scrapheap?
I live in Zurich and have been thinking of switching.. If you don't mind, I have a couple questions:

How did you handle learning it given so many layers? Stickers seem like trouble..

Do you find it better or worse for dealing with use of occasional accents/etc from a 3rd latin language, (i.e. French) than a more traditional compose key route?

Thanks!

efes··on Why London Underground stopped people walking up the escalators
I think the article is missing the obvious point that the queue at the bottom affects walkers as well as standers even though it is being formed by the delays caused by standers needing more time on the escalator. Allow walkers up the middle well separated escalator without interference and many more people would walk.
efes··on Why London Underground stopped people walking up the escalators
Given that there are two escalators per direction, making the middle ones purely for walkers would probably create the necessary incentives to get ~2/3 walking to bypass the longer queues on the sides..
efes··on RemixOS – Android for the desktop
I would rather slowly move everything to ChromeOS and abandon android. I find it ridiculous that I am running an OS from Google with a broken mobile browser. I also find it more likely that the ChromeOS model could remain secure despite the contents of the play store than the Android "we aren't quite sure what we meant to do here" model.
efes··on The Wolfram Language: Fast Introduction for Programmers
I can't find the study I was thinking of which involved the extreme disparity between the sender's self rating for their ability to convey an intent and the receiver's impression.

Here is a similar abstract: http://pro.sagepub.com/content/56/1/1491.abstract

Note that emotion is also conflated with aspects like priority and whether the response is a criticism or positive acknowledgement which will affect future interactions or even immediate attempts to "repair" non-existent faults.

I personally find it slightly easier to communicate with non-native speakers over email as any bilingual must have more experience handling ambiguous communication.

In working with native speakers in open floor plans, I have seen hilarious results that I would have found all the more hilarious if I were further away from the projectiles and had fully independent finances.

(But I will concede that English is a good language for talking abstractly about subjects that are clearly neutral where it matters little if nuances are misunderstood.)

efes··on The Wolfram Language: Fast Introduction for Programmers
False. Miscommunication occurs in most pure english interactions but only occasionally is significant and even more rarely actually kills someone.

There is excellent research on text/email communication.

efes··on Japanese Suicide Apartments
I think another way to look at fear of ghosts is that it is a fear that something unknown about the environment contributed to the death. A house may be flawed in a subtle way that tends to lead to depression and suicide.. just as for cancers, problems like radon gas existed before they were identified.

Using such a view, past deaths on the same land in a different configuration are less "ghosty" as they no longer share as much in common with the suspect environment.

But by that argument, the landlord and/or builder should be paying up for their negligent design!

efes··on Mozilla Will Stop Developing and Selling Firefox OS Smartphones
I really wanted them to merge themselves in as an alternate userland mode for cyanogenmod and any other AOSP. I'm not sure if microsoft's investment in cyanogenmod was a response to those kinds of possibilities..
