efdee··on Reimagining Fluid Typography
Well, before CSS we just used <FONT> tags to specify font face and size.
efdee··on Show HN: I made a site to tell the time in corporate
I would understand someone asking if the week starts on Sunday or Monday, but I honest to God did not know some people start their week on Saturday.
efdee··on What happens to your online accounts when you die?
When posting snark it's always wise to make sure your post doesn't have any embarrassing grammatical mistakes or spelling errors.
efdee··on Why young parents should focus on building trust with their kids
My kids love their screens. They use it for "productive" things (Minecraft, ...) and "unproductive" (shorts, ...). We have certain time restrictions and there are two days a week where they're not allowed to use them. We also don't let them take screens to restaurants. They get to take a bunch of crayons and a book and they're very much fine with this.

I feel that it's a matter of sticking to principles and being predictable for the kids, but maybe I'm biased and just have "easy" kids.

efdee··on Ending our third party fact-checking program and moving to Community Notes model
I think that Snopes link makes it perfectly clear what is going on. Just because you disagree doesn't mean that it's wrong.
efdee··on Ending our third party fact-checking program and moving to Community Notes model
Indeed. This was more censorship than fact-checking.
efdee··on Minimal Vanilla JavaScript Framework
I fully expect forward/back buttons to work in an SPA.
efdee··on A Taping of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' Saved an Innocent Man from Death Row (2017)
But you are coming out, nonetheless.
efdee··on A liar who always lies says "All my hats are green."
The beginning of the article quite clearly states "A liar who always lies", though.
efdee··on Every V4 UUID
Number #553752677 will surprise you!
efdee··on IMG_0001
More likely: uploaded with the intent that a very limited audience would see it, thinking it would drown in the pool of videos uploaded to YouTube or maybe not even aware that other people could stumble upon it.
efdee··on If not React, then what?
Redux uses context but does not do full re-renders except if you are using it wrong. It does a shallow compare on the object resulting from your selector to decide whether or not to re-render a component.

That being said, none of the React projects I've had the chance of working on in the last 5 or 6 years has used Redux, so stating that it's been the go-to state management library for nearly a decade kind of sounds weird to me.

efdee··on I hacked the Dutch government and all I got was this t-shirt
Which country does this?
efdee··on X's Moonshot for Circularity
X.com was a bank funded by (amongst others) Musk in 1999. They later merged with Confinity to found PayPal.
efdee··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
That is not relevant. I'm on the plan of my original service provider, regardless of whether or not that plan is offered at my current location.
efdee··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
It's that dreaded government intervention thing.

(also: increased latency for roaming?)

efdee··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
When I travel to North America, I get a 6 EUR/day data deal that transfers my EU 5G quota to the US. Demand better from your companies.
efdee··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
There should not be. The law specifically says there should not be a difference in home use vs EU-roaming.

I think you raise a good point though. I'm automatically suspicious of free WiFi.

efdee··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
"(especially not when traveling)"

In the EU there are no roaming costs so it's not any different when travelling.

efdee··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
I have 100GB for 25eur/m, I can't say I worry about consumption ;-)
efdee··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
What's the point? 5G is cheap in Europe, with no additional roaming costs between countries.
efdee··on FFT-based ocean-wave rendering, implemented in Godot
You might be taking "splash screen" a bit too literal.
efdee··on Reddit banned me for developing Geddit
The fact that you label this as "go mask off" is just showing your own bias, really.
efdee··on Reddit banned me for developing Geddit
"Pick an instance" is where you lose me already. Same for Mastodon and similar services. "Mods will be different and what they mod will be different" sounds like hell to me.

Not saying it's bad for everyone, just my personal experience. It chases me away.

efdee··on Kim Dotcom's extradition to the U.S. given green light by New Zealand
Nitpicking, but I think the saying goes "You can bring a horse to the watering hole, but you can't force it to drink". :-)
efdee··on Kepler's 400-year-old sunspot sketches helped solve a modern mystery
I think that yes, they will. Generally these historical records exist because some people went through the effort of preserving them for all these years. I feel this effort is a lot lower when your records are digital and infinitely duplicatable.
efdee··on Windows recovery environment and bootable USB creator in 200kb
Wow, unexpected trip down memory lane. Thanks.

Press ESC twice for nostalgia.

efdee··on Things you didn't know about GNU readline (2019)
This is about using readline as a dependency in your own software. Because readline is GPL3, your software must also be GPL3.
efdee··on AdFlush
Why do you think everybody switched from IE to Chrome? Because their tech friends told them to or did it for them.

The day Chrome can't sufficiently block ads anymore is the day Chrome dies.

efdee··on AdFlush
And that will be the day Chrome dies.
