efa··on RFK Jr is wrong – there's a rich history of autistic poets
Thank you. Read the whole quote. He's just listing everyday things most people take for granted. Pointing out that these people won't be able to do them. Stupid to zero in on "write a poem". BTW, George Bernard Shaw did not have level 3 autism.
efa··on Schools reviving shop class
Yeah, I'm not sure why it's a hedge against AI. How about a hedge against the fact that we still need to build stuff, cool spaces, plumb buildings, provide electricity and fewer people are being trained for this stuff.
efa··on Bill prohibiting police from lying to children passes Virginia Senate
I guess no more Operation Flagship (well maybe since this is just lying to kids). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Flagship
efa··on German Navy still uses 8-inch floppy disks, working on emulating a replacement
Comedians should have no fear of AI taking their jobs.
efa··on It’s an age of marvels
There are butchers in the supermarkets (at least the one I go to)
efa··on Violent crime is dropping fast in the U.S. – even if Americans don't believe it
Finding out how great things are just before the election. Thanks!
efa··on California will begin backing intentional burns to control wildfire
>Prescribed burns are generally focused mainly on acreage and reducing the amount of fuel available for wildfires; cultural burns are focused on what needs burned to revitalize woodlands and promote biodiversity.

I wish they'd elaborate on how this is done. Focuses on what needs to be burned? Meaning a type of tree? Just the undergrowth? Curious how fire can be controlled to just specific elements in the landscape.

efa··on California will begin backing intentional burns to control wildfire
And what the hell are "cultural burns"??
efa··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
Aren't bars similar to dating sites? A forum for men to compete with other men for women. I would think they'd have better luck with group activities (rec sports, craft/hobby stuff) or online groups devoted to something (restaurant enthusiasts, etc).
efa··on Apple Rankings
Me too. And they last forever and are still good and crisp.
efa··on Banned in the USA: The Growing Movement to Censor Books in Schools
Fascism!? Do you believe any book is okay in a CHILDREN'S library?? Of course the books need to be reviewed and decided if they are appropriate.
efa··on Banned in the USA: The Growing Movement to Censor Books in Schools
Because it's for children. Surely you don't think anything goes in a children's library?
efa··on Banned in the USA: The Growing Movement to Censor Books in Schools
History curriculum is routinely modified to match the modern ethics. They don't call this banning, but it really is. Out with an old version, in with a new.
efa··on Poll: Contractors, what is your hourly rate
1.6 mil a year. That's not too shabby.
efa··on Solein – Protein out of thin air
It's is 2022! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soylent_Green#Plot
efa··on Coding as a greybeard
You're still too young. Wait til you've worked five years and you know everything. ;-)

That's what I've seen. Young folks learn latest language/framework/tool/etc and decide the old stuff the grey beards use is antiquated. Then you get real old and realize there is nothing new under the sun (usually) and there was a reason the gray beards were doing it the way they were.

efa··on Code doesn’t have to be a mess
>>People abstract before an abstraction is necessary.

This!

efa··on College Was the Biggest Mistake of My Life
I find it hard to believe his degree was a hinderance to him getting a shelf stocker job. Seems like a little exaggeration to make a more colorful story.
efa··on I'm tired of Google's business products
>>I struggle to make the connection between those kinds of business apps and advertising.

I'm starting a restaurant. I put together a doc about items I need. All the sudden I'm getting ads for restaurant equipment.

efa··on Google says employees flouting vaccination rules will eventually be fired
I assume he means the right to not have a substance injected into your body if you don't want it.
efa··on Daylight saving time is 'not helpful' and has 'no upsides,' experts say
I like the night you get an extra hour sleep!
efa··on Daylight saving time is 'not helpful' and has 'no upsides,' experts say
Wow, perfectly stated. Thank you.
efa··on Evidence for European presence in the Americas in AD 1021
I thought this has been known for awhile. I visited the site in Newfoundland like 15 years ago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L'Anse_aux_Meadows
efa··on Human Rights Are Not a Bug
Yep. Also a right can't be guaranteed if there is a limited resource needed to provide it. If healthcare is a human right, and half the country dies due to some plague, who will provide the healthcare that is guaranteed.

This is just a semantic argument over the exact meaning of "right". It's not a moral discussion. It's fine to say everyone should get healthcare, just don't call it a right because words have definitions (or should).

efa··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
I've heard of servers making so much they can't afford to move to a white collar job (or would have to take a pay cut).
efa··on F# is the best coding language today
>>Most coders are interested in learning how to code in a purely functional manner

I didn't realize that was true. Long time coders or newbies?

efa··on 43% of South African youths are not in employment, education or training
Curious, what metric would you use to determine if a group of people are lazy?
efa··on 43% of South African youths are not in employment, education or training
They keep bumping up the starting wage. $12/hr for fast food. You can get a nice one bedroom here for $800/month. No long commutes here.

I never said I had a definition of lazy. I just said that some people are lazy and some aren't. You can't make a blanket statement saying all young people are not lazy. Just pointing out that I've never seen so many help wanted signs as I do now.

efa··on 43% of South African youths are not in employment, education or training
Of course some young people are lazy. And some are not lazy. I have no idea about South Africa, but in the US I can hardly find a business in my town (especially restaurants) without a "help wanted" sign. This may be a short term issue related to the pandemic.
efa··on Bette Graham, inventor and founder of Liquid Paper
>>Today, she’s largely been forgotten.

I guess not on HN!
