edwinjm··on America.gov goes crazy on "play Minecraft"
One excerpt:

Let’s go back. The atoms of the constituent were scattered in the grass, in the rivers, in the air, in the ground. A woman gathered the atoms; she drank and ate and inhaled; and the woman assembled the constituent, in her body, which later required a birth certificate. And the constituent awoke, from the warm, dark world of its mother’s body, into the long dream, which issued a Social Security number. And the constituent was a new story, never told before, written in letters of DNA. And the constituent was a new program, never run before, generated by a sourcecode a billion years old. And the constituent was a new human, never alive before, made from nothing but milk and love and, eventually, a voter registration. You are the constituent. The story. The program. The human. Made from nothing but milk and love. Eligible, on paper, for several things you have not asked about yet.

edwinjm··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
That’s not a citation. Of course you want to have actual research to substantiate these statements.
edwinjm··on I said no and Apple said yes
See the other HN story https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49801939
edwinjm··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
The story’s not about blocking every possible malicious ad, it’s about making a report and still letting the ad through.

The ad probably looks at the IP address, sees its from Google and show a legitimate ad.

Google can easily solve this with using external IP addresses, but doesn’t. Because money.

There’s nothing to appreciate here.

edwinjm··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
That’s why we have laws

edwinjm··on App Store Rejection of the Week: Dark Hours
I am quite an Apple fan, but this dampens my enthusiasm considerably.

How many great apps are rejected, but build by people without reach?

edwinjm··on Decathlon Germany adds Wero payment option to decathlon.de website
The article is about Europe and the last time I checked, the Netherlands is in Europe.
edwinjm··on Decathlon Germany adds Wero payment option to decathlon.de website
What was the iDEAL payment option now says iDeal WERO. The Dutch are already using WERO for a couple of months now.
edwinjm··on My security camera shipped a GitHub admin token in its login page
The DoWD owns such a large chunk of the IP space, it can very easily be a coincidence
edwinjm··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
It should work for all people and not depend on these “tricks”.
edwinjm··on Interrail: 6,379Km and 13 Countries over 7 weeks
I did Interrail when I finished studying in 1993. It was a wonderful experience. Visiting foreign countries, meeting people, experiencing crazy things. I can recommend it to everyone (especially as a young adult).
edwinjm··on A graph that should be front-page news
No. The (standard) deviation is 3.5.
edwinjm··on IT administrators are "fed up" with Microsoft's "useless" apps and Windows 11
The sites breaks scrolling on the iPad. Their engineers are probably busy fixing Windows issues.
edwinjm··on The End of Code Review: Coding Agents Supersede Human Inspection
It seems they didn’t even do any research. This is not science, it’s just an opinion.

Is this a rip from https://github.com/NielsLeenheer/cssDOOM
edwinjm··on Teenagers Stayed Overnight at Their School and Found Hidden Ancient Roman Ruins
Surprised that Smithsonian magazine makes such an awful website. Every minute, new ads are loaded, shifting the text up and down, making it hard to read.

Apeldoorn is actually a very nice place, surrounded by nature.

Not to be confused with John von Neumann
edwinjm··on AI subscriptions are a ticking time bomb for enterprise
Does the writer understand that for every developer who burns all tokens, there are many people who subscribe just to join the AI revolution, but only ask a couple of questions a day?
edwinjm··on Dutch suicide prevention website shares data with tech companies without consent
Europe has laws against misuse of personal data. What circus?
edwinjm··on Dutch suicide prevention website shares data with tech companies without consent
In Europe, it’s not (and should not be) a “standard” thing.
edwinjm··on Dutch suicide prevention website shares data with tech companies without consent
> Perhaps you are right but what the duck does sales funnel mean in a suicide prevention website?

They’re not governmental, but an organization dependent on subsidies and to get them, they have to show they’re relevant.

edwinjm··on Dutch suicide prevention website shares data with tech companies without consent
In the EU, it’s illegal
edwinjm··on Dutch suicide prevention website shares data with tech companies without consent
It’s “just” a major corporation collecting very personal data.
edwinjm··on Dutch suicide prevention website shares data with tech companies without consent
Europe has laws against misuse of data from visitors, so it’s generally safe to visit such websites.

The fact that this is on hackernews means this case is the exception, not the rule.
