edwinjm··on Biggest German news site Bild.de blocks access to users with adblockers
The cat and mouse game has started!
edwinjm··on The Hitchhiker's Guide to Modern JavaScript Tooling
It's still not cross platform. Changes made to the Makefile under one OS might break easily under the other OS's.
edwinjm··on Procedurally generated HTML5 3D world with day/night cycle
Make sure you have the latest driver for your video card.
edwinjm··on Do we need browsers?
1) Almost every application uses technology that's build on older technology that's build on older technology. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

2) Nobody says browsers want to replace all applications. It's a false condition the whole article is based on.

And why is it anonymous? Does he/she know it's nonsense?

edwinjm··on Weyl points, first predicted in 1929, observed for the first time
For a moment, I confused Weyl points with Ley lines and was shocked by disbelief.

Ley lines: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ley_line

edwinjm··on Fallout 4
I hope it's meant ironic. It's just a movie and a link pointing to a non existing page which contains an image...

edwinjm··on Fractal Lab
He's the modern version of Bob Ross.
edwinjm··on The “Web Application” Myth
Christian Heilmann makes a lot of thinking errors here:

1) Because a technology fails in the hands of amateurs or learners, doesn't mean the technology is bad.

2) He assumes webdeverlopers don't think about the consequences of a JavaScript only website. In my experience, that's not the case.

3) The fact that there's a lot of talk about JavaScript frameworks does not mean webdevelopers are less interested in the end product. It means JavaScript and everything around it is in flux and improving every month. And the decision which framework to pick is very important. It can mean the difference between a stalled or thriving end product one year later.

edwinjm··on Vivaldi – A new browser for our friends
Hmm, so it's not Open Source? So it's not a community effort? So the developers are paid? Then how are these expenses earned back?
edwinjm··on What taking my daughter to a comic book store taught me
I looked in this online Belgian strip store and for the Dutch language market (quite small demographic), I could find 5 (five) titles for girls! And I'm pretty sure there's more (Noortje, Tina...)

edwinjm··on Junction design in the Netherlands [video]
As you can see in the video, all cyclists drive quite slow. In the Netherlands, cyclists who use their bike for sport, do wear helmets and go outside town.
edwinjm··on HexGL by BKcore
Nice JavaScript/WebGL demo. Unfortunately, it doesn't work well on the iPhone. The rendering is good, left/right works, but accelaration is broken.
edwinjm··on The Dutch Village Where Everyone Has Dementia
CNN World published their item on YouTube:

edwinjm··on Comparing file parsing in 8 different languages
Nice. I really like to see C, C++ and asm.js versions.
edwinjm··on HTML5 is done, but two groups still wrestle over Web's future
There actually is a project that wants to replace the html/css/javascript browsers: Adobe Air.

http://www.adobe.com/nl/products/air.html

For some reasons it's not really taking off.

edwinjm··on C++ has become a scripting language
The definition of a scripting language is that the source code (the script) is the program.
edwinjm··on Safari on iOS 7 and HTML5: problems, changes and new APIs
Worst thing is that serious bugs in Safari that surfaced during beta are not fixed for release.
edwinjm··on Timemaps - travel time estimation in the Netherlands
Too bad it's limited to the Netherlands.
edwinjm··on Php-ist: Istanbul PHP Conferance
I never would've thought PHP was popular in Turkey.

That's because one of the stupidest bugs I've heard of: if you select the Turkey language (tr_TR) as locale, your PHP-code breaks:

https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=18556

Fortunately, it will be fixed in the upcoming PHP 5.5.

edwinjm··on Ask HN: Which computer/laptop do you use?
15" MacBook Pro (early 2011) with 16GB and 512GB SSD. I'm satisfied :-)
edwinjm··on Teenager facing terrorism charges for something he posted on Facebook
"The land of the free" - Unfortunately that's more and more just a dream, in a world where more and more countries are more free than the USA.
edwinjm··on The JavaScript Guy
I much prefer to be the JavaScript guy than the PHP guy. JavaScript does have some pitfalls, but they're easy to avoid. JavaScript is way cleaner and better thought out than PHP. Python is still very small. The two big "enterprisey" languages C# and Java are ubiquitous and are hard to excel in.
edwinjm··on The JavaScript Guy
It's indeed not wise to use technologies only one employee knows. The best way is to chose technologies together and find developers who want to learn those. You have to motivate your colleagues to jump on board. And tell the senior developer websites will be more and more depending on JavaScript. It's not 2000 anymore.
edwinjm··on American airports do not rank in Top of the world
My experience with JFK airport (New York) is not so good, too. It's very chaotic, staff at the helpdesk doesn't listen to you questions but fill in what they think you want, everybody seems to be at their first day on the job, they can only do what their screen says, some places are dark (no lights), airline desks are/seem to be made from cardboard, etcetera.
edwinjm··on So I hit "TAB" and Google mail sends the partially composed message?
You are blamed just like you blame the interface designers. Don't be mad.

Fact is, most reported problems, in the end, are caused by the user him/herself, so his response is not that bad.

edwinjm··on Animation and the Uncanny Valley
Nice to see how the appearance of characters in games become more and more realistic.
edwinjm··on “My bank account's got robbed by European Commission. Over 700k is lost.”
The alternative is that the bank goes bankrupt and you lose everything. Be glad.
edwinjm··on Pi's Epic Journey
Beautiful example of parallax scrolling.
edwinjm··on USPS Discrimination Against Atheism?
This makes the migh moral standards claim of believers staggering.
