edgesrazor··on Wing Commander II
This was the game that taught me what system requirements were. My parents got it for me for my birthday or Christmas - went to install it and my Leading Edge purchased from Crutchfield just laughed at me.
edgesrazor··on Cancer ‘vaccine’ eliminates tumors in mice
Wishing you both all the best.
edgesrazor··on Humble Book Bundle: Bitcoin, Blockchain and Cryptocurrency
Mind posting the link to that comment? I purchased that bundle and would be curious to see where to start.
edgesrazor··on Equifax or Equiphish?
I'm just saying that just because you're willingly giving your DOB, doesn't mean it's not considered "sensitive information". An employer can use it to determine if you're old enough to work there (Arby's for example), but if it got out, someone could possibly use it against you, so it's considered sensitive.
edgesrazor··on Equifax or Equiphish?
Believe it or not, it really is. I was given this example by an attorney who specialized in HIPAA law: Say a chain store has a breach and the only thing that was stolen was a customer's name and their flu shot records - that wouldn't be that big of a deal, right? Well, say one of those customers was a fitness guru who built an empire on natural and holistic remedies. This changes the entire context of the breach.

The same thing would work for age. Look at that ridiculous California law they proposed to get IMDb to stop showing actors' and actresses' birthdays. There can always be a claim of age discrimination - especially in finance.

edgesrazor··on AWS is having widespread issues
After nearly 10 years working with AWS, I've learned to never trust that page.
edgesrazor··on AWS is having widespread issues
Interesting - I had no idea they did that. Well, I guess checking my instances in C won't be any help to you. Sorry!

Which AZ?
edgesrazor··on Waze for Android Auto
Don't feel too bad about this - Android Auto is nice, but it still has a lot of drawbacks and deficiencies. I just switched to a car without it and realized I don't miss it at all.
edgesrazor··on The most secure password

edgesrazor··on The Future of Privacy
It's by William Gibson, so it kind of does.
edgesrazor··on Many LASIK patients may wind up with glare, halos or other visual symptoms
I had it done nearly 10 years ago and ever since, my eyes are much more sensitive to light and I do see halos around lights at night. That said, I'd still have it done again without a second thought - the benefits for me far outweigh those drawbacks.
edgesrazor··on Google’s lawyers are asking to find Oracle’s lawyers in contempt of court
Off topic: I may be old and cranky, but I simply can't stand articles with animated gifs - it just seems ridiculously unprofessional.

> At Atlassian, one of our design principles is to gracefully reveal depth.

Did anyone let the Jira team know? I love Jira, but the UI can be horribly clunky at times.

edgesrazor··on What Kind of Name Is That? How to Name Fictional Characters
I can relate. I spent half of Player of Games just trying to internalize the pronunciation of Jernau Morat Gurgeh. That aside, great book.
edgesrazor··on Owner of Peet's to buy Keurig for almost $14B
Peet's bought out our Caribou and took quite a while to remodel it before re-opening. It was open as a Peet's for maybe 6 months and it closed for good. I just don't understand how they came to that decision.
edgesrazor··on How The Fast Times Of The Paparazzi Came to a Halt
Wow, chalk seeing a BuzzFeed article on HN as one of the last things I thought I'd ever see...
edgesrazor··on Shutdownify is shutting down
You just know there's a startup somewhere saying, "Dammit, that was our idea!".
edgesrazor··on How Google killed my startup
This reminds me of the story of Blizzard seeing Dominion Storm at E3 in 1996. After seeing the demo, they felt like they should kill Starcraft because of how much "better" Ion Storm's demo was than their own.

Turns out is was mostly smoke and mirrors, and Blizzard made an exceptional game because of it.

edgesrazor··on Cardinals Face F.B.I. Inquiry in Hacking of Astros’ Network
If I'm not mistaken, I would guess the only reason the FBI is involved is because it's interstate computer crime, which is their jurisdiction. I see what you mean though - if it's just a matter of someone stealing the old GM's password and using it to log in, let's not waste the taxpayer dollars.
edgesrazor··on McDonald's CEO promises better food
A point I can't even begin to argue - I used to work there when I was 16.
edgesrazor··on McDonald's CEO promises better food
A crazy idea might be to start with better evaluation of potential franchisees. The ones in my area are a comedy of poor management and apathetic employees.
edgesrazor··on iMessage purgatory
I ran into this issue 2 years ago when I dropped iPhone for Android - I seriously can't believe it's still a problem. Even following Apple's official KB article, it will still take a few days for all of your messages to start going through again.
edgesrazor··on What Happens When One of Your Coworkers Dies
I had something like this happen at a small software company I worked about 15 years ago. Our owner had written a specialized program for his wife to sell on the side, but under the company's name. One weekend, after a very big fight, she ended up committing suicide after he'd left the house. The next week, they had me going through her email to get a list of customers she had been working with. I can't begin to tell you the amount of discomfort you feel going through a recently deceased person's email - especially when it was mixed with personal messages. I got in, found all the work related messages, forwarded them to my manager and got out - I couldn't bear to be in there any longer than I had to. No one at the company was very close with her, but it was still a complete shock.
edgesrazor··on Briefly profitable alt-coin mining on Amazon through better code
That's what I assumed, but if you look at the history, the prices have been trending like this for over a month now.
edgesrazor··on Briefly profitable alt-coin mining on Amazon through better code
Funny you should mention that. There was a blog post I had read where they were discussing an unfortunate AWS customer who bid $999.00/hour for Spot instances thinking it would protect their running servers from shutting down. Little did this person realize, Amazon - unlike eBay - doesn't just accept the next highest bid, they accept THE highest bid. They were running a Spot instance for an entire month at $999/hour. Ouch.
edgesrazor··on Briefly profitable alt-coin mining on Amazon through better code
I'd been doing my own research on viability of mining on Amazon, and I posed a question on the AWS forums asking how it's possible the spot prices could be going so high. There's instances going anywhere from 5-20 times their On-Demand prices. At this time, no one's answered it, so if anyone here knows, I'd love to hear why someone would pay $10.00 per hour for an instance they can get On-Demand for $2.40.
edgesrazor··on The Right Way to Grant Equity to Your Employees
They were self-funded for about 3-4 years, then received a cash infusion from a private equity firm (the first trigger event), then were sold to a much larger VC a few years later. That's when the firings started taking place.
edgesrazor··on The Right Way to Grant Equity to Your Employees
It really does, but these founders end up only hurting themselves - people talk, morale dips, and no one will trust them again.
