edgarallenbro··on The Dark Web’s Top Drug Market, Evolution, Just Vanished
We're talking victimless, not harmless. With drugs, there is no victim, because the person making the purchase is making a conscious choice to buy something to put into their body. They are well aware of the effects and risks.

Contrarily, identity theft is clearly not victimless. A person's credit card or social security number is taken from them without their knowledge or consent so that it can be sold.

To go on an anti-drug tirade here when your pedantry isn't even correct does no one any good. All you're doing is parroting and reinforcing negative drug stereotypes. You wouldn't be doing so if those sentiments weren't pushed on you since before you could even comprehend them.

Google's way of handling accounts is infuriating.

I have multiple g-mail accounts. One of them is my primary personal one, and another one I use is a shared account that my band uses for business and soundcloud.

Google makes it hellish to sign out of one and into the other. For the longest time, I had them linked, and my band mates could see my personal e-mail. I don't know if they could get past a log in point, but the fact that its so hard to keep them un-linked and log into one or the other is infuriating.

edgarallenbro··on Nobody Knows What an iPad Is Good for Anymore
Looking at sales as an indicator of the success of a product is warped and silly. The fact that it is considered the right way is a shining example of the fundamentally flawed nature of our capitalist system.

Up until last year when he moved out, I continued to use my dad's first generation iPad while he used his new mini. The first generation iPad worked great, I used it all the time. I saw no reason to go and purchase one of the newer ones for myself other than the fact that I couldn't install iOS 7 on it. The software pushed obsolescence, not the hardware. My dad kept it when he moved out because it was still a great device.

A more accurate title would be "No one knows of any reason to buy the new generation iPads because their older ones are working just fine"

edgarallenbro··on Rovio lays off 110 people as Angry Birds hype fades
>Rovio's expansion into animation and merchandising continued to hit its profits hard, leading to today's 110 redundancies.

I wouldn't say they grew the company too fast. I can definitely see why merchandising would have been a huge hit on profits.

With the amount of angry birds garbage I saw in stores in my area, compared against the number of people that would possibly want said garbage, well...it was just a waste of money.

It's like some old executive thought it would be a great idea to expand into merchandising, as if this were still the 80s or 90s where people bought rooms full of that kind of useful shit.

Anyone who has looked at the income inequality mountain that has appeared since then knows that the people who would buy that kind of crap can't afford to. Though, it doesn't surprise me that the kind of executive who would be able to make a decision like expanding into merchandising would be upper class and completely out of touch with how little people want their garbage and would have seen it as a complete waste of money.

edgarallenbro··on The Life of a Pot Critic for the Denver Post
No, shit like this isn't helping. You are talking out of your ass about something you clearly know nothing about.

Marijuana is as addictive as potatoes. The fact that you even mention heroin in your post shows you clearly have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.

Alcohol is way more addictive and dangerous than pot and we have a huge craft brewing and tasting culture in this country.

If you know absolutely nothing about a subject, for the love of god, please stop and think before you hit reply. You're not contributing at all by posting when you know nothing about the subject.

Make your hand into a fist

Starting at the left, each knuckle and the space in between counts as one month.

Count all the way across and when you get to the end of your fist, start over (or carry over to the next fist)

Knuckle months have 31 days, months in between knuckles have 30 days (except for February)

edgarallenbro··on Google: Teach Girls Coding, Get $2,500; Teach Boys, Get $0
I am generally anti-feminist, but I support this.

There is a serious lack of women in the tech industry, and it isn't (as some in the slashdot comments suggest) solvable just by encouraging that companies hire more women. Companies can't hire more women if there simply aren't that many women applying because they don't exist in the field. Encouraging more women to get into the tech industry at a young age is the right approach, IMO.

Nope. At this point, people have either forgotten about Iraq or just come to accept it.

The gay marriage issue is a current one. It's a fight that's being fought right now. Protesting someone who is against gay rights has an actual impact in today's politics. Protesting against someone who supported going into Iraq over 10 years ago does not.

Yes, there will be public outcry, because many people view her as a deceiver, and others will think she is a tool of the NSA. But the outcry will not be the same as it was for Eich.

edgarallenbro··on OKCupid CEO Apologizes for Supporting Antigay Candidate
Those things are very far off from the point.

I intentionally avoid Chik-fil-a, The Salvation Army, etc. by choice. However, if someone was pro-LGBT and still chose to eat Chik-fil-a, I don't really care. The only time it would be comparable would be the people who intentionally started eating Chik-fil-a as a show of opposition to the people who were boycotting it.

edgarallenbro··on I don't want to be a Real Programmer
This.

Compare it to other things, say for example, musicians.

When a band goes on tour, it could be looked at like they're putting in 168 hours a week. Really though, they're doing maybe 8 hours a week of actually playing in front of people, maybe like 5-15 hours of practice, and that's all the solid "work" they're doing. That's not where the job ends though...100% of their life is their job because they are always potentially writing new material.

edgarallenbro··on How to be a sane programmer
As a dev who also sings for a cover band, this post so completely describes my life its scary.

But, I have a bit of a different philosophy.

I think that if you really love something, you'll not only do it for free, but pay to be able to do it.

There are some people who love coding so much that you can't get them to stop. I am not one of those people. I love it enough that I can stand being at my job for 40 hours a week, and I enjoy the time I spend there.

What I really love is Rock & Roll. When I was in high school, I footed the bill for all the tickets my band couldn't sell just for the chance to play on the same stage in Hollywood that a bunch of my idols had played on.

Now I play in a band that plays 90's prog metal covers, something that someone from an 80s/90s pop cover band said no one would ever care about and that we could never get paid for.

He was wrong. People actually love us because instead of just settling for doing what paid, we did what we love, and it just so happens that there was a need for what we love. We're doing our first paid gig in a few weeks.

edgarallenbro··on The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Why it pays to be kind
Its really, really not that bad.

I used to get mad about unwanted e-mails too. I used to keep a separate e-mail to sign up for websites because of all the crap they sent me.

Turns out, its actually really fucking easy to get around this. I just went through my recent unread e-mails and hit the unsubscribe button. At most it takes 5 seconds per list.

Now I use my real e-mail for my real sites and I only get e-mails that I want.

This "Stare at a wall for 2 minutes for every person who you had the balls to send an e-mail to" reeks of the kind of whiny first-world entitlement that I'm beginning to associate with the color orange.

edgarallenbro··on I am not an introvert. I am just busy
The problem is that you said you're an introvert, and the author explicitly said, in the title, that he is NOT an introvert.

Going to the social gathering wasn't the problem. The problem was him excusing himself from that social gathering.

In fact, going to the social gathering was the solution. He is an extrovert, who had been trying to solve a problem alone for two weeks. Being an extrovert, going to a place where there is a lot of people is gonna do a lot more than going for a walk alone.

edgarallenbro··on Maryland Lawmakers Push to Cut Water, Electricity to Spy Agency Headquarters
I'm pretty sure that wouldn't fly.

This is one of the rare ways in which the two-party system is actually beneficial. They disagree so much, that when they actually do agree, it's serious business.

Taking down the NSA is a move that has bipartisan support. Shutting down LGBT advocacy groups in the same way would cause massive backlash from the left.

edgarallenbro··on Psychologically trying PC game re-creates tension faced by soldiers
First off, there's no such thing as "teamkilling" because there are no teams. From what I understand, anyone can kill anyone.

Second, you start off with no resources. It would be pretty silly to play long enough to get enough resources (guns) to kill someone only to throw yourself at anyone and everyone you see, considering each attack would diminish your resources and they are likely to try pretty hard to fight back and kill you, at which point you'd have to start over.

It might be fun, but it would get tiring quickly I think

edgarallenbro··on Beats Music launches
Beats are EQ'd to increase the volume of the high and low end frequencies.

These frequencies sound good to human ears.

So, when someone compares Beats to non-Beats, they hear that those frequencies are louder and the very fact that there is a noticeable difference is enough to create the illusion in some gullible people that Beats 'sound better'

Of course, in the long run, they don't.

edgarallenbro··on Spotify Adds Led Zeppelin as It Focuses on Mobile Business
>If you appreciate music at all, you will appreciate it whether you can get it instantly or wait weeks for it, the latter being an inconvenience, though one filled with anticipation, stress, and excitement

Unfortunately, this just isn't true. Enjoyment of music is very dependent on context in most circumstances.

An easy example is metal drumming -- not necessarily impressive based on sound alone, but extremely impressive once you realize the physicality it requires.

The same goes for the way in which the user hears the music. Track 6 out of 10 on a physical CD or spotify CD may not get noticed as much as it would if it were track 1 on side B of a vinyl

edgarallenbro··on Why Mac users don’t rant about the OS
I think the bigger problem with Windows 8 was a broader problem that I saw articulated in a thread on reddit.

The thread was about how it seems like next-gen game companies seem to treat releases like they are beta releases. Many of the games for the PS4 and Xbox One are riddle with bugs. Companies seem to have gotten to comfortable with the fact that they can easily release updates post-release, and it's gotten to the point where they are releasing unfinished software to customers who expect it to be a finished.

Major problems with Windows 8 that should never have made it past QA/UAT:

1. Missing start menu button. Extremely confusing jump from 7. Fixed in 8.1

2. Confusing full screen start menu. Remedied in 8.1 with tutorials and better UI cues (down arrow for unpinned applications, embedded search bar on all applications page)

3. On Desktop, files should not open in metro apps by default. (still not fixed)

There should have been a longer beta testing period, and Windows 8.1 should have been Windows 8.

So really, I think the more important point is the mentality of the release cycle. Windows 8 was teased long before it was finally released, so there was a "why is this thing they promised us taking so long just release it already" effect. Apple, on the other hand, tends to hold off on announcing their products until shortly before they're released. There's a "it's been a while since Apple released something new, I wonder when they will release the next thing" effect, which allows them to wait until products are more releasable before actually announcing them
