edandersen··on Teens inundated with phone prompts day and night, research finds
Looks like another job for the EU!
edandersen··on iPhone 15: users of Pro and Pro Max models complain of overheating issues
You're holding it wrong.
edandersen··on Google Ending Support for Jamboard
Can they at least continue working as 55 inch monitors or is Google going to deliberately contribute to global warming?
edandersen··on How The iPhone 15 Pro camera works and why you’ll want to shoot 24MP photos
They should make the phone the same thickness as the lenses, have a nice 6000mAh battery size and a high powered headphone jack. Maybe then the phone will lie flat on a table.
edandersen··on How The iPhone 15 Pro camera works and why you’ll want to shoot 24MP photos
Apple should just use the words "sensor crop". The contortions they are going through not to use the words are getting very contrived.
edandersen··on UK Post Office: 700 Horizon software scandal victims to receive £600k each
Any prosecutions yet for the people behind the scandal?
edandersen··on iPhone 12 withdrawn from French market for non-compliance with EU regulation
You're absorbing the radiation wrong.
edandersen··on Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
USB-C supporting writing ProRes video and photo files directly to external storage is something I did not see coming.

That's Apple actually undercutting their own storage upgrades... what is going on?

edandersen··on Ask HN: What is the best way to build a desktop app in Windows in 2023?
They decoupled the UI framework from the OS in WinUI 3.0. The point of UWP was that it used controls and rendering capabilities built into the OS. This resulted in performance regressions and missing features for several versions compared to the 2.8 branch.
edandersen··on Ask HN: What is the best way to build a desktop app in Windows in 2023?
To make an app with the same "nativeness" as the "Settings" app, you need to use UWP, or WinUI 2.7+. But not 3.0+.
edandersen··on I used a Game Boy camera for Facetime video calls in iPadOS 17
I'm hoping USB-C on iPhone 15 unlocks UVC camera support on iOS 17 too - this will make iPhones decent portable camera monitors/basic recorders for proper digital cameras.

Sony's Xperia line has been able to do this for years, starting with an actual HDMI input port on the Xperia Pro and moving to supporting UVC over USB-C a bit later on.

edandersen··on UK pulls back from clash with Big Tech over private messaging
Maybe they'll get the nudge unit out for another round.
edandersen··on RyujinX – Open Source Nintendo Switch Emulator
RyujinX is now the poster-child for C#.
edandersen··on Third of Japan's 18-year-olds women may never have children: study
Now do the TFR numbers for the "native" populations and you'll notice something quite interesting - that Japan is actually doing quite well.
edandersen··on Microsoft is unbundling Teams from Office in Europe to address regulator concern
The only acceptable "remedy" would be to unbundle Teams from all existing subscriptions and have it as a separate add-on only, requiring an opt in, an extra charge and a chance for a competitor to make a sale. Unbundling at this stage doesn't reverse the damage to the market.
edandersen··on Apple Sep 2023 Event: “Wonderlust”
The sensor size for periscope lenses are so small that even the flagship Sony Xperia 1 V's periscope lens with a Sony sensor produces garbage pictures. How Apple solves this will be interesting.
edandersen··on macOS updates for Apple Silicon Macs are larger than reported
Well over 1GB for the Ventura 13.5.1 update and it takes 20 minutes to install on my M1 Pro MBP. "macOS Ventura 13.5.1 fixes an issue in System Settings that prevents location permissions from appearing."

I never thought I'd appreciate Windows Update but on there this would be less than 100MB and take 5 minutes to install...

edandersen··on Request: Re-open JPEG XL issue
If Google supported JPEG XL in Google Photos, they wouldn't be able to sell as many storage upgrades.
edandersen··on CloudFlare’s last Warrant Canary was published over a year ago
That's fine but the user has no way of knowing if a third party is party to the communications or not. Surely they should know?
edandersen··on CloudFlare’s last Warrant Canary was published over a year ago
It doesn't need to be a pop up. Just behave like a HTTP site ("not secure" warning) when you could be MITM'd between yourself and the entity you think you are communicating with.

If it turned out "End to end" encrypted chat went through a third party that even transiently had access to the plaintext version of the chat (like how Cloudflare works) you'd be apoplectic.

edandersen··on CloudFlare’s last Warrant Canary was published over a year ago
By MITMing traffic between you and the host. Maybe Firefox should display a warning when it detects intermediaries that could have decrypted the traffic between the host and you?
edandersen··on CloudFlare’s last Warrant Canary was published over a year ago
Okay, Firefox should start warning users.
edandersen··on CloudFlare’s last Warrant Canary was published over a year ago
Chrome should starting warning users if Cloudflare is used to protect a website, due to the risk of MITM.
edandersen··on Repeating yourself thrice doesn’t turn you into a 3x developer
Ah, the "homemade ORM" anti-pattern. My condolences.
edandersen··on Microsoft Owns the Trademark for “X”
So Microsoft sold the Mixer logo trademark to Meta? Cool.
edandersen··on US Citizens Will Need Visa to Travel to Europe in 2024
Europe the continent or the EU? Does this include the UK?
edandersen··on Apple says it'll remove iMessage and FaceTime in UK rather than break encryption
Are iMessage and Facetime disabled in China?
edandersen··on Tokyo Is the New Paris
> Currently, long term Japan life is best enjoyed by introverts (generally).

And long may it continue.

edandersen··on Discord is not documentation
Maybe some users of Discord want the satisfaction of answering a question raised by another community member, but don't want the answer to be publicly indexable and searchable forever? In this case, Discord is working perfectly.
edandersen··on Simpsons Hit and Run source code (2003)
It will be fun to now have Simpsons references show up when using Github Copilot!
