eco··on Google Workspace thinks my domain is an email provider (2025)
I was trying to activate Zelle with my bank and since Zelle is used for scams so often I had to do a bunch of identity verification steps while on the phone with my bank.

One of them was to submit a photo of my drivers license. After I did that it OCRed out some details and prepopulated a form with my information. Hitting submit gave me an error saying to use my full middle name, not an initial. My full middle name is a single letter though.

The person on the phone with my bank had no idea what to do and just kept asking me try again.

I busted out my elite hacker skills though and added a space to the end of the middle name field and was able to steal my own identity.

eco··on Great Salt Lake Tracker
Ok, but this isn't climate change driven problem. Climate change will keep making this problem harder to manage, but the problem is excessive diversions of water feeding the Great Salt Lake. If climate change were solved tomorrow, this would still be a problem.

I'm not saying we shouldn't be working on climate change, but the solution for this problem must be much sooner and more local than a giant worldwide effort.

eco··on Great Salt Lake Tracker
I always like the idea of megaprojects and several Utah legislators suggested this. It's kind of a dumb idea, though, when you think about it because the vast majority of Utah's diverted water is going towards farming alfalfa to feed livestock, so we could much more easily solve the problem by just importing these end products from a region that is better suited to their production than a desert.
eco··on Great Salt Lake Tracker – Grow the Flow
I'm trying to figure out how driving less and walking more would result in the Great Salt Lake getting an extra million acre feet of water into it per year.

One might argue that would accelerate the collapse of the Great Salt Lake because the vast majority of diverted water is used for agriculture and increasing everyone's caloric requirements would result in more agriculture.

eco··on Tesla tells HW3 owner to 'be patient' after 7 years of waiting for FSD
It's Sam Altman's HN username.
eco··on Tesla ending Models S and X production
Elon's $1T tranches are mostly based on market cap, right? Switching from just a carmaker to a "physical AI" company could be all he needs to convince the stock market to ignore Tesla's declining profits and raise the market cap even higher.
eco··on Z2 – Lithographically fabricated IC in a garage fab
He founded a company with Jim Keller called Atomic Semi since then.
eco··on Google flags Immich sites as dangerous
This kind of makes we wish CURSED.md was a standard file in projects. So much hard-earned knowledge could be shared.
eco··on Amazon to end commingling after years of complaints from brands and sellers
Google ngram viewer has vendor at two orders of magnitude more usage. Personally, I don't think I've ever seen "vender" before.
eco··on An untidy history of AI across four books
That's one of the things that drives me nuts about all the public discourse about AI and our future. The vast majority of words written/spoken on the subject are by generic "thought leaders" who really have no greater understanding of AI than anyone else who uses it regularly.
eco··on Ask HN: What's a good 3D Printer for sub $1000?
Prusa is going to use Bondtech's upcoming INDX system, which swaps out the entire filament path.

Bambu Vortek seems to just be swapping nozzles so, while that should cut down on waste, it's going to be much slower (XL is already much faster than AMS based printers but comes at a substantial price increase).

INDX tool changes are expected to be around 8-12 seconds. Vortek would be probably be around 30+ seconds.

eco··on Taco Bell AI Drive-Thru
I've had two interactions with Wendy's AI drive-through, and the first time I was pleasantly surprised, but the second time it would not stop suggesting add-ons after every single thing I said. It was comically pushy.

A human would have pretty quickly picked up on my increasingly exasperated "no, thanks" and stopped doing it, but the AI was completely blind to my growing frustration, following the upsell directive without any thought.

It reminded me of when I worked in retail as a kid and we were required to ask if they needed any batteries at checkout, even if they were just buying batteries. I learned pretty quickly to ignore that mandate in appropriate situations (unless the manager was around).

Makes me wonder how often employees are smart enough to ignore hard rules mandated by far-off management that would hurt the company's reputation if they were actually followed rigidly. AI isn't going to have that kind of sensitivity to subtle clues in human interaction for some time, I suspect.

eco··on OpenIPC: Open IP Camera Firmware
ipcamtalk feels completely captured by resellers and affiliates. I'd suggest taking any advice you see there with a grain of salt.
eco··on Long live American Science and Surplus
My understanding is that Ra-Elco essentially moved to Standard Supply after the building burned down. I haven't checked it out myself yet so I can't confirm.
eco··on GIMP 3.0
You can configure it to not be enabled by default, but you click a little blue circle next to the title and it will show you the community version.

Plenty of good content is forced to play the clickbait thumbnail/title game and it would be a shame to miss some of it because of YouTube's incentive problems.

eco··on GIMP 3.0
I think you maybe didn't see the "yet" in there. This is software written by unpaid volunteers. There is no user-hostility, only a lack of time and help at implementing things.
eco··on GIMP 3.0
It's not though. Even generally good YouTubers are forced to play the thumbnail game. Garbage content is typically revealed in the community title.
eco··on GIMP 3.0
Check out the DeArrow extension. Crowd sourced thumbnails and titles. It's great.
eco··on GIMP 3.0
GEGL is just a library created to modernize GIMP's image manipulation pipeline. It forms a DAG of image operations. It's what unlocked non-destructive edits and porting everything over to it was a pretty massive undertaking (though it probably didn't need to take 20 years...)

End users really don't need to know about it. Its exposure in the UI is likely just because a lot of stuff it can do isn't available yet in the traditional GIMP UI.

eco··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
The registry method is Ctrl2Cap by SysInternals.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/ctr...

It's the first thing I download whenever I'm setting up a new Windows machine.

eco··on Jellyfin: The Free Software Media System
Yeah, my collection isn't that big, but my friend's Jellyfin which I use all the time has 4000+ movies and 400+ shows (11,000+ episodes). Works just as well as my significantly smaller collection.
eco··on Jellyfin: The Free Software Media System
It does not always transcode. It transcodes if your client reports it doesn't support the format or if the bitrate cap on your client is lower than the source media. It says why transcoding is happening in the Administration Dashboard for any currently playing media.
eco··on TL;DW: Too Long; Didn't Watch Distill YouTube Videos to the Relevant Information
One of the best things in SponsorBlock is Highlight segments. If the video is 10 minutes of filler building up to a single interesting/exciting moment you can often see exactly on the timeline where to jump to.
eco··on TL;DW: Too Long; Didn't Watch Distill YouTube Videos to the Relevant Information
I love the DeArrow experience. The problem with clickbait on YouTube is that even good creators are compelled to use it because it works. Whether it's due to the algorithm or just human behaviour I don't know.

There's a little blue button next to the video titles to toggle it on and off and it's very interesting to compare the community title and thumbnail with the original. Good original titles are often left largely intact, maybe with some extra context. Betteridge law is no longer relevant. It's nice.

eco··on Island residents are still dealing with the fallout of exploded Starship
The steel on the fuel tanks of Starship is only four millimeters thick. The chance of it surviving are basically non-existent.

I imagine the journalist was just fishing for expert quotes that fit their predetermined narrative and leaving everything the expert said about the unlikelihood out.

eco··on Lorne Michaels Is the Real Star of "Saturday Night Live"
I think it was in an interview on Norm MacDonald Has A Show that Lorne was asked what the best era of SNL was, and he said the best era for SNL is just whatever one you grew up with. I think he's right about that.
eco··on Belgium will ban sales of disposable e-cigarettes
Someone in the reviews posted test results and found they only had a 253-333mAh capacity at 1.5v (so 0.5Wh). 10440 lithium-ion cells (which closely match AAA size) have 250-350mAh at 3.7v (say, 1.295Wh).

If they actually had the 1200mAh capacity they say they'd have 1.8Wh which is much higher than a straight lithium-ion cell without the charging and voltage regulation circuitry taking up space.

eco··on The transition from GIMP 2.x to GIMP 3.0 took two decades
I remember excitedly reading the announcement for gegl that was finally going to bring non-destructive editing to gimp. If I'd been told it was going to take at least 20 years to actually happen I would not have believed you.

But whatever, I'm glad it's finally here.

eco··on YubiKey still selling old stock with vulnerable firmware
BitWarden went this route against LastPass. They've had their own closed source component contoversies lately though.
eco··on Google CEO says more than a quarter of the company's new code is created by AI
I'd be terribly scared to use it in a language that isn't statically typed with many, many compile time error checks.

Unless you're the type of programmer that is writing sabots all day (connecting round pegs into square holes between two data sources) you've got to be very critical of what these things are spitting out.
