eckza··on The Case of a Curious SQL Query
I'm glad you posted this. I haven't seen it here (or anywhere else) before, and it was a fun read.
eckza··on Woman wins 12-year legal battle against Google
Oh, I'm not saying that she didn't do a great thing.

Have you ever spent years of your life tied up in litigation?

It's not fun. It's very frustrating, to feel as though a resolution will never happen. It feels indeterminate; indefinite.

It's a shame that she should have to spend twelve years of her life pursuing justice. What about the thousands or millions that simply won't try, because they can't rationalize the effort?

Read another way,

eckza··on Grindr Loses Almost Half Its Staff on 2-Day RTO Requirement
Jobs Georg, who has changed jobs 10,000 times in the last three years, is an outlier and should not have been counted.
eckza··on A $200 mini-laptop with a Intel 8088 chip and 640KB
> Unfortunately there’s no information on the battery capacity or battery life, but the little computer works with a 12V/1.5A power supply.

Let's be real for a moment; you wouldn't be getting a true vintage mobile computing experience if you weren't tethered to an electrical socket!

eckza··on Apple’s new headset meets reality
I just cannot imagine a future in which I ever want to strap a screen to my face.

I'm not speaking for anyone else here… But I simply cannot imagine an upside.

eckza··on I Still Use Windows 95 (2008)
I just picked up a Surface Laptop 5. Much like the Surface Laptop 3 and 2 that I had before it, it is a best-in-class piece of hardware.

I actually prefer its form factor to my M1 MBP; it's thinner, lighter, and I prefer a 3:2 display to 16:10. It runs 3x4k + 1x1080p over a single Thunderbolt cable into a dock (granted, I am using a USB 3.0 to dual DisplayPort adapter, but the SL5 is driving 2 of the 4k displays.)

I still use my M1 MBP for most things, and I have one for my job, as well; but the SL5 may be the nicest physical laptop hardware available today.

(Windows is another story. If I could run Linux on it with no compromises and no hassle, I'd likely ditch the Mac. So it goes.)

eckza··on Sounds emitted by plants under stress are airborne and informative
Okay but - and I can't believe that I actually have to say this - it is pretty clear that they _haven't_.
eckza··on Sounds emitted by plants under stress are airborne and informative
When you cut off a human's appendage, the screaming comes from a voice. The voice comes from a sort of... consciousness. Which while we haven't exactly nailed down what makes one up, we are reasonably certain that it involves a nervous system.
eckza··on Call yourself titles
In short: don't talk about it, be about it.
eckza··on You might not need an effect
It's unfortunate that the current state of affairs in software engineering is that if someone doesn't merge a bugfix PR immediately, rumors of its death begin to circle.

A quick glance at the Elm Discourse or Elm Slack will surface that our community and culture is alive, well, and growing.

Evan continues to quietly work on vnext, and is presenting at Goto Aarhus in May.

I'm not interested in changing your mind in particular, and I do not wish to argue; I am merely posting this for the benefit of anyone that should see your comment.

Sometimes, shipping fast and bouncing approaches all over the place is not, as it happens, the most sane and sustainable way to create lasting software. You and others can continue along doing that; we will continue to ship our hundreds-of-thousands-of-lines-of-code Elm frontend.

eckza··on You might not need an effect
Sometimes I Cmd+F "elm", but only on days where I feel like picking a fight.

eckza··on Mostly adequate guide to FP (in JavaScript)
You can learn Elm. All twelve of us will help you.

It's far from being "the standard language for the browser", but the browser doesn't know that.

eckza··on GOTOphobia considered harmful in C
Expressions that aren't required to return a value for all possible branches of execution that can also mutate state considered harmful.
eckza··on Online Lens/Optics Simulator
... I got excited when I saw this because I thought it might be an interactive tutorial about lenses and optics in Haskell.
eckza··on Mercedes-Benz previews its operating system MB.OS
My (admittedly-beloved) 2015 F-150 will reboot Sync if I'm listening to music (usually on Soundcloud) if the song title includes non-ASCII characters.
eckza··on Amazon employees express dismay, anger about sudden return-to-office policy
> Boy these employees are about to get what looks like a very expensive lesson in expectation / risk management.

Is that really the takeaway, here?

eckza··on Apple fires hundreds of contract workers, previously assured jobs were safe
So where does the blame lay: on the USA for not offering public healthcare, or on companies for "exploiting" what is quite clearly a bus-sized loophole in the system?

Discuss.

eckza··on Ask HN: What would it take for an AI to convince us it is conscious?
Not to handwave too hard here; but do we know, _for certain_, that the universe can be in total described mathematically?

Yes, I know that what I'm hinting at is not falsifiable, burden of proof, etc.

But I think it's a little arrogant of us as a species (nb, I'm not talking to you, sgillen, in particular) to think that since we've come as far as we have, that the mysteries of consciousness and life and the universe and everything are going to be laid bare Real Soon Now.

eckza··on Simple Modern JavaScript Using JavaScript Modules and Import Maps
Give Elm a shot.

We haven't had a breaking change to the current version since August 2018: https://github.com/elm/compiler/tags In fact, the single most frequent criticism of our community is, "Is Elm dead? It hasn't been updated in years". The truth of the matter is that it's not dead; it's just really stable.

Everything still works. You can use a bundler, like Vite or Parcel, but you don't really have to. You can use whatever Javascript library you like, through ports or web components, but again: you don't really have to, unless you need to do interop with another service (i.e., Google reCAPTCHA or Stripe) - and in that case, you're at their mercy regardless of whether you're building your application in Elm, or in something else.

Compared to the rest of the JS ecosystem, we have virtually zero dependencies on outside tools or infra, other than Github; but if Github "goes away", I'd be willing to bet that the rest of the Javascript ecosystem would be in a lot of trouble, too.

We are a small but passionate developer community. Enough of us - myself included - do this full time for it to feel like it's a safe bet and that it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Join us. https://elmlang.slack.com/

eckza··on Show HN: Docker rollout – Zero Downtime Deployment for Docker-compose
Woah, alright! This is what I've been waiting for. Thanks for building this... I can't wait to test it out!
eckza··on Electro Gyro-Cator
> Lift-off oversteer

was on the tip of my tongue. Thank you!

eckza··on Electro Gyro-Cator
Are you lifting right before you start to turn in? That'll do it, because lifting off the throttle abruptly will shift weight to the front, which will unweight the rear; and sometimes that little weight transfer is all it takes to break the back end out a bit. (Used to do this regularly in a Taurus that I had the pleasure of driving for a few months.)
eckza··on Electro Gyro-Cator
Probably not, as it was only optioned to the Accord and Vigor, which are FWD vehicles.

eckza··on Ask HN: Those making $0/month or less on side projects – Show and tell
https://gatesnaplabs.com

Idea: Make software for the Olympic sport of bicycle motocross.

Execution: Flawless. Built the app in Elm + Ionic Capacitor. It looks great and works perfectly. There's even a Web version at https://gearbag.bike

Marketing: lol

Result: I have spent five digits of money (paid my friends market wages for their help, particularly with UX and design) and made $6 from Google AdMob and have ~100 installs.

Worth it. Doubling down on the next project this year.

eckza··on Idris: A language for type-driven development
Thank you for this. That's exactly what I was getting at; you illustrated it far better.
eckza··on Show HN: I've built a C# IDE, Runtime, and AppStore inside Excel
I think that the problem is that:

- fsharp's big selling point is that it runs on dotnet - most FP ideologues run screaming from M$, and there are other, better (subjectively), more-active FP langs that do many of the same things, such as OCaml and Haskell - most dotnet shops are "csharp or die" and getting fsharp adoption is more or less an impossible task for cultural reasons

I support fsharp and generally like it, but I'm not reaching for it for net-new stuff that doesn't already have a dependency on dotnet. $0.02.
