eckyptang··on Ask HN: How much coffee do you drink?
Absolutely none at all.

I drink water, from a tap only, and nothing else at all.

I got rid of coffee and tea from my diet about 4 years ago. It was one of the best health improvements I have ever made. Instantly solved weight gain, insomnia, irritability, migranes, sickness, concentration problems and bowel problems. Felt like utter crap for about 2 months but it wore off eventually.

I could draw a direct comparison to when I broke my leg and was on large quantities of opiates. The withdrawal from this was horrible. The same with caffeine.

It's not good for you if it does this.

Now trying to get rid of sugar, which is MUCH harder.

eckyptang··on The “Lost” Steve Jobs Speech from 1983: Foreshadowing Wireless Networking & iPad
We had everything he said back then - it was just rather bulky. It's not a visionary statement - it's logic.

I wish everyone would stop harping on about Jobs - he was a marketing expert not a visionary.

eckyptang··on Entertainment Weekly puts smartphone in 1000 magazines
What is slightly more worrying is that if this based on the usual magazine distribution methods, 1/3 will be pulped without being sold.
eckyptang··on Lenovo Computers, Soon To Be Made In America
I'm in the UK.

The ones here tend to be broken.

eckyptang··on Lenovo Computers, Soon To Be Made In America
Agreed ten times over.

I've been trying to grab a 4:3 (1400x1050) T61 for a while off ebay as they're cheap and upgradeable to a reasonable spec.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find one :(

eckyptang··on Microsoft has their own Windows Phone in the works
Agreed. Got aa 710 and an 800 here. Nice phones for the money.
eckyptang··on Why I use Windows 8
Yes entirely. This is not marketing - this is experience.

If you pick decent host machines and decent hardware (read WHQL + decent brand) to plug in then you're sorted.

Buy some shitty B-grade clone crap and you will suffer.

eckyptang··on Why I use Windows 8
They don't. These machines are not connected to the Internet in any way shape or form.
eckyptang··on Why I use Windows 8
Thanks for this - very helpful :)
eckyptang··on Why I use Windows 8
It did suck a bit on XP. Vista pretty much fixed it all to be honest. It's pretty much perfect in Windows 7.
eckyptang··on Why I use Windows 8
I agree. It's one of the easiest wins as well and one I've campaigned about for years.
eckyptang··on Why I use Windows 8
My Lenovo T61 does the same and has done since I bought it a long time ago.

There is perceived quality and actual quality. OSX has perceived quality, but little actual quality. You'll experience that if you have to deal with projectors, other monitors and hotdesking regularly - it's utterly frustrating. Windows - seriously just plug it in and it works.

When you see a Windows "workstation class" machine (Dell Precision) with an uptime of over a year on a trading desk with 6x 1600x1200 monitors off the back of two Matrox cards, you'll understand what I mean. They just don't go wrong.

eckyptang··on Why I use Windows 8
Just hit start -> type connections.
eckyptang··on Why I use Windows 8
He's pretty much spot on.

My encounters with Windows 8 so far have lead to literally zero interaction with Metro other than for searching for stuff and starting programs for the first time which it's quite good at.

Win+X is my start menu.

eckyptang··on Ask Steve Wozniak Anything
I asked myself the same question and came to the following conclusions: Less turtleneck, less hipsters, more user satisfaction, hardware that actually worked properly, more than a 7% market share, less hype, not another unix clone.

More Sony in the 80's and 90's than Lady Gaga meat hat.

eckyptang··on John Callaham: Don’t be a goat murderer*
Yes we'll see how principled Notch is when they wave a fat cheque in front of him...

Money is the divider between words and actions.

eckyptang··on Can programmers without CS degrees find jobs?
Yes. Half of our guys have no qualifications at all or even dubious ones. What matters is that they can prove themselves and deliver stuff.

People who are self taught and self motivated tend to go futher than CS graduates. Reputation is the key thing - get a good one :)

eckyptang··on Service Oriented Problems
The point is really that SOA is probably for larger established organisations, not simple web apps etc.

Your experience suggests that the organisations were not quite ready for SOA or chose the wrong tooling. I'm only making this point because I work on a successful SOA architecture which exhibits none of these problems. The difference is that we moved to this architecure when the product was 10 years old and used AppFabric+WCF to build it. The product and skill set were very mature then. We also had enough resources and cash to pull it off.

eckyptang··on Peak Chrome? Google's browser falls as Firefox, Internet Explorer stay flat
Indeed. As a point to back this up, 97% of our 80,000,000 daily hits are internet explorer 7-10.

This confirms is that browser statistics are rubbish!

eckyptang··on libimobiledevice - Teaching Penguins to Talk to Fruit
The sad thing is we probably shouldn't need this.

Good work though.

eckyptang··on Japan introduces piracy penalties for illegal downloads
Unfortunately they say little about who they are...
eckyptang··on Let me guess: You sleep with your iPad, don't you?
Technology is banned from my bedroom. Books and a Casio watch - that is all that is allowed.

Much healthier for the mind from experience!

eckyptang··on The PC is Over
I live in London, UK. They are literally everywhere.

A tablet is not a universal computing device: it's a portal for consuming stuff from a content producer. If it stood alone, then it would be, but they don't - none of them!

eckyptang··on Warning over shortage of engineering graduates - UK
We had no training in place. I was expected to catch up in my own time, which I did but it was hard. This was a NASDAQ/FTSE listed defence contractor.

Main things for me were by the time I left, we were in FPGA and microcontroller territory and mixed mode simulation rather than basic SPICE models etc. You need to look out for major industry trends and get on a community like Element14 [1]. Things have changed since when I graduated with respect to what gaps there will be but there will be gaps.

Looking at some colleagues and their complaints about graduates recently, people seem to want analogue, microwave, transmission line and network experts. I wouldn't know one end of a waveguide from another (I did digital mainly) so I'm not the person to ask :)

eckyptang··on The PC is Over
Sorry but bollocks. And I'm fed up with this utter crap being spewed at every available moment.

The day the local pc repair shops shut, the day the local electronics store shuts and the day that people pry my universal computing device out of my hands and the 3-4 billion other people let it go, I'll believe it.

Until then, this is a fad.

eckyptang··on Minecraft creator attacks Microsoft's Windows 8 plan
I've seen that before. To be honest, most of it is crap. It's cherry picking. They're always splurging over Ubuntu and raspberry pi.

the only bias I see is pro war and pro current government And the occasional shoddy piece of journalism.

eckyptang··on Minecraft creator attacks Microsoft's Windows 8 plan
Hmm like?

eckyptang··on Minecraft creator attacks Microsoft's Windows 8 plan
It definitely hasn't. They've been terribly critical over the years.

I think the issue is that they are not as biased against them as the rest of the industry who know how to get clicks for Microsoft bashing.

eckyptang··on Warning over shortage of engineering graduates - UK
This. I did an ee degree. When I hit industry I quickly realised that I knew nothing. The company expected otherwise.
eckyptang··on Minecraft creator attacks Microsoft's Windows 8 plan
I still think he's being a sensationalist. Even the BBC are less biased here. There is no requirement to get it certified and you can just use minecraft how it is now without having to go near an app store.

This is all hot air.
