Hi! I graduated college and now have a job doing computery stuff (.NET! AWS! Buzzword-of-the-week!)

I'm always interested in cool stuff! e-mail me at easton (at) planeteaston.com

easton··on ECScape: Understanding IAM Privilege Boundaries in Amazon ECS
Expected, yes, but it’s not something you’d necessarily think about I guess. I never thought about the containers being able to access the EC2 metadata endpoint since ECS exposes a container specific one (although they obviously could, in hindsight).
easton··on Amtrak NextGen Acela Debuts on August 28
I don't know if these trains are supposed to be much faster than the existing train sets, which do it in like 3 hours?

(My understanding is that the speed limits is more to do with the railways than the actual trainsets, but maybe that's wrong. Apparently they go 160mph at max vs 150 on the old ones, but I don't know if that speed can be sustained between DC and NYC)

(takes less memory than Miro, at least in Firefox :D)

Is there another source that says what exactly happened in that executive order? I can't find one signed on june 6th that had anything to do with payments.

[0] was from March, and demanded treasury modernization (like paperless and stuff), but didn't really say anything about crypto or FedNow. And FedNow's website mentions nothing about the program being slowed down (just announcements about new things happening in Q3 and a bunch of new signed on banks).

easton··on ChatGPT chats were indexed then removed from search but still remain online
Feels like they could just change the URL to the chat when you disable the discoverable thing. Guess that’d break links you explicitly shared, but who’s going and referencing someone else’s ChatGPT search so often they can’t take a updated link?

On the other hand, I think they had a dev or two on TC39. I remember it being mentioned in one of Andreas’ videos (years ago)

easton··on .NET 10 Preview 6 brings JIT improvements, one-shot tool execution
The docs are terrible right now (prerelease and all that), but to get started:

1. Install the dotnet sdk preview

2. Make a .CS file with top level statements.

3. dotnet run <file>

> Certainly, and this technology won't help or hinder them any more than a good old fashioned textbook.

Except that the textbook was probably QA’d by a human for accuracy (at least any intro college textbook, more specialized texts may not have).

Matters less when you have background in the subject (which is why it’s often okay to use LLMs as a search replacement) but it’s nice not having a voice in the back of your head saying “yeah, but what if this is all nonsense”.

easton··on Jqfmt like gofmt, but for jq
uv has a feature where you can put a magic comment at the top of a script and it will pull all the dependencies into its central store when you do “uv run …”. And then it makes a special venv too I think? That part’s cloudier.

https://docs.astral.sh/uv/guides/scripts/

Makes it a snap to have a one file python script without having to explicitly pip install requests or whatever into a venv.

easton··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
Getting the battery replaced fixed mine (and seemed to mildly improve system performance, although maybe that’s placebo), might be worth a shot if you like the form factor.
easton··on MacPaint Art from the Mid-80s Still Looks Great Today
The Switch 2 update seems to have resolved every performance complaint I had with TotK, if you're willing to pay the price of admission.

I know what you mean, I’m not being pedantic, but I just realized it’s been 19 years. I wonder when we’ll start calling them “Office files”.

easton··on NSF getting kicked out of headquarters by HUD
I'd assume (?) this effect is minimized by so much of the workforce living outside the district (600k people live in the district, ~6 million in the DC/Maryland/Virginia statistical area).

The Maryland and Virginia sides have representation (which is very pro-government jobs, as they should be considering their constituency).

easton··on Microsoft Edit
disclaimer: I used to commit to winget a lot and now I don’t.

…but is it really less secure than brew or choco? The installers are coming from reasonably trusted sources and are scanned for malware by MS, a community contributor has to approve the manifest changes, and the manifests themselves can’t contain arbitrary code outside of the linked executable. Feels about as good as you can get without requiring the ISVs themselves to maintain repos.

easton··on ChatGPT's enterprise success against Copilot fuels OpenAI/Microsoft rivalry
That's GitHub Copilot, not "microsoft copilot", the bot built into the Microsoft 365 landing site. it doesn't give you model options, for example.
easton··on Ask HN: How to get rid of Gemini?
It's the same as going to the "more" tab on the results page, then selecting "Web" which only gives you the traditional 10 blue links results.
easton··on Using Microsoft's New CLI Text Editor on Ubuntu
Guessing it’s because it needs to go everywhere Windows is and they didn’t want to have a target on their back from pulling in a bunch of dependencies that they’d have to prove were safe. (Especially since Windows installs where this editor works may not get frequently updated, like embedded)

It might have been faster to just write the code they needed vs consult a lawyer and local security person for every crate they wanted to pull in.

easton··on No Hello
Wave emoji reaction, then I go back to what I was doing until the rest of the question lands. It's quicker!

although these days I sometimes respond "how was your weekend" to continue the pleasantries :D

easton··on Show HN: S3mini – Tiny and fast S3-compatible client, no-deps, edge-ready
AWS has a video about it somewhere, but in general, it’s because S3 was designed in a world where not all browsers/clients had HTTPS and it was a reasonably expensive operation to do the encryption (like, IE6 world). SigV4 (and its predecessors) are cheap and easy once you understand the code.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=tPr1AgGkvc4, about 10 minutes in I think.

easton··on My AI skeptic friends are all nuts
on the other hand, if AWS or Microsoft was caught taking customer data out of their clouds their business would be over. I don't know if AI has anything to do with it, inference is just another app they sell.
easton··on Can Open Source Projects Exit Foundations?
Yes. Wikivoyage is actively being edited (although a lot of it is from wikitravel ~10 years ago)
easton··on Microsoft is starting to open Windows Update up to any third-party app
They 'stole' (brainraped?) the idea and some of the implementation ideas, but the code is entirely separate. winget is implemented in very windows-y C++, appget was C#.
easton··on OpenAI to buy AI startup from Jony Ive
What is it about that picture that's so icky? I had the exact same reaction.
easton··on Java at 30: Interview with James Gosling
They intentionally chose to not have checked exceptions though, and people have different opinions on it. They believed that people would just catch Exception most of the time anyway instead of selecting on a very specific type (which is often how it works, in web apps anyway.)

easton··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
Pretty much everywhere except for the area inside the 495 beltway (right next to DC), where public transit is good. But even then, housing prices near metro stations are higher.

You probably want a car in most places, just like almost everywhere in the US.

easton··on Like cursor, but for blogging: a weekend project
It's not that my comments are infallible, but if I write something wrong/silly it'll be caught during code review. similarly if there's a comment missing before some arcane nonsense nobody will remember in 3 years, then i'd expect a PR reviewer to tell the dev to add one.

Copilot just likes to puke very useless comments whenever I type "//", especially in autocomplete mode (I don't really use the chat mode).

easton··on Like cursor, but for blogging: a weekend project
The reason I barely use copilot is because it tries to write comments for me. I don’t get why they don’t have a button that says “disable autocomplete within comment blocks” (since the IDE knows which things are comments), but it’s so yucky feeling when it tries to write something I wouldn’t say.
easton··on Determining IaC ownership – a tag-based approach
NHI => Non-human identity, something I had never heard before reading this (even though i was familiar with the concept of identities for services, like service accounts or iam roles or whatever). I wonder if that's a common acronym.
