earnestinger··on Self-reported race, ethnicity don't match genetic ancestry in the U.S.: study
There is no “the science”.

There are bunch of unrelated people that do research with vastly different opinions and methods. (Thing in common: scientific method and review, publications)

When it comes down to layperson, research results are averaged out and de-nuanced by jounalists.

earnestinger··on Self-reported race, ethnicity don't match genetic ancestry in the U.S.: study
Could you elaborate?

I assume you imply that humans evolved not in Africa. Where?

earnestinger··on Self-reported race, ethnicity don't match genetic ancestry in the U.S.: study
If data would include both, one could check which of them is a signal signal and which is noise
earnestinger··on A manager is not your best friend
Acting emphatically without invoked feeling, sounds “dry”or high-functioning-sociopath-like (not a killer, but as “doing it only because you know it’s expected/required”).
earnestinger··on A manager is not your best friend
Empathy implies not only the knowledge of the feeling, but also some level of share in that feeling.
earnestinger··on Builder.ai Collapses: $1.5B 'AI' Startup Exposed as 'Indians'?
Technically you are wrong. The best kind of wrong.
earnestinger··on Finland announces migration of its rail network to international gauge
> Russia never went on an extermination drive in order to create an ethnically pure ethnostate.

Technically correct is the best kind of correct.

earnestinger··on Finland announces migration of its rail network to international gauge
Hate? No.

Wary? Yes.

Seems Necessary given current circumstances.

(After peace comes, and enough time passes, someday, we will be friends again)

earnestinger··on Finland announces migration of its rail network to international gauge
Logical explanation, there are better alternative targets. (Supply of deep strike is finite, one must prioritise)
earnestinger··on Finland announces migration of its rail network to international gauge
Does it imply that, Toronto finally is one of United States cities with broad gauge rail tracks?
earnestinger··on Dilbert creator Scott Adams says he will die soon from same cancer as Joe Biden

earnestinger··on My quest to make motorcycle riding that tad bit safer
If only somebody would make motorcycles less noisy.. I dream of the day where there are neither mosquitos nor motorcycle noise. Two most annoying things during the summer.
earnestinger··on Expanding on what we missed with sycophancy
Parent is not alone in that line of thinking. (Some rudiments of reasoning do show, but result is dominated by excellent compression of humongous amount of data)
earnestinger··on Expanding on what we missed with sycophancy
What kind of hard coding do you have in mind? How the technique would look like?
earnestinger··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
Americans go big. They use plenty more water during enhanced interrogation.
earnestinger··on The coming knowledge-work supply-chain crisis
Interesting point.

You got me thinking (less about llms, more about humans), that adults do have many contradictory truths, some require nuance, some require completely different mental compartment.

Now I feel more flexible about what truth is, as a teen and child I was more stuborn, sturdy.

earnestinger··on The effect of deactivating Facebook and Instagram on users' emotional state
> don’t try to win arguments if you know you’re right

Caveats:

- I can be wrong (sometimes need some pointing out)

- it is ok to post for the benefit of lurkers (inform others of fake news and such)

earnestinger··on The effect of deactivating Facebook and Instagram on users' emotional state
You probably mean the visible cooky thing.

But behind the scenes companies did start to think about customer data gathering, retention and deletion in terms of maximal fine of 4% of turnover.

earnestinger··on Python's new t-strings
It’s custom .format implementation. (You access the placeholder and value and produce the string)
earnestinger··on Show HN: JuryNow – Get an anonymous instant verdict from 12 real people
Unsolicited feedback: I felt that some questions (what do you think of new Indian government) require “I have no idea about the topic”, and some (do I have moral duty to visit family member in prison) require “much more nuance nuance exist here”
earnestinger··on Leaked data reveals Israeli govt campaign to remove pro-Palestine posts on Meta
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspiracy_theory

> A conspiracy theory is an explanation for an event or situation that asserts the existence of a conspiracy (generally by powerful sinister groups, often political in motivation),[3][4][5] when other explanations are more probable.

Evidently, different people assign different probability to security chief thinking “while real bombings are actually exploding each week and whole cities sleep outside to avoid death, let’s plant a fake bomb and see what happens”

earnestinger··on Leaked data reveals Israeli govt campaign to remove pro-Palestine posts on Meta
Parent poster is not saying it should be ignored, parent poster is saying that people should not give-up and repeat “courts can be ignore”.

Because if enough people chant that, then it will become a real possibility.

earnestinger··on Leaked data reveals Israeli govt campaign to remove pro-Palestine posts on Meta
> Russian opposition

Do you mean the guy who died relatively recently in Russian prison? Or his colleague who was part of prisoner exchange

earnestinger··on Leaked data reveals Israeli govt campaign to remove pro-Palestine posts on Meta
Technically, they are the same. As in: people with power want to control the narrative.

This was so, is so and will always be so, everywhere.

But but but… details matter. A lot.

The west has traditions how and when to apply power, which is distinctly different from Russia.

I hand-pick two illustrations of Russia:

1. https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2022/09/27/moscow-police-accu...

> Officers “beat up Kamardin very badly and stuck a dumbbell in his anus,” according to Novaya Gazeta Europe.

2. Bald man claim to power was accompanies with mysterious explosions of apartment buildings after which Chechens were declared enemies and war started.

Some interesting bits from wikipedia:

> Three Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) agents who had planted the devices at Ryazan were arrested by the local police.[6] The next day, FSB director Nikolai Patrushev announced that the incident in Ryazan had been an anti-terror drill and the device found there contained only sugar, and freed the FSB agents involved.[7]

And

> 13 September 1999: Russian Duma speaker Gennadiy Seleznyov makes an announcement about the bombing of an apartment building in the city of Volgodonsk that only takes place three days later

> 16 September 1999: Bombing in Volgodonsk, 17 are killed, 69 injured

earnestinger··on The case against conversational interfaces
It can ask, but how much time do you want to spend answering stuff?

Such dialog is probably nice for first time user, it is a nightmare for repeated user.

earnestinger··on Testing Without Mocks: A Pattern Language (2023)
the benefits I see:

- nullable (test double/mock) updates would be more natural, easier, since it is located right there in prod code. (One level of indirection removed)

- with authoritative location of test double, it reduces the risk of test double proliferation/duplication

(I doubt I will use it in the proposed form though, saving test double code in prod is not for me probably)

earnestinger··on Just Write a Test for It
It bugs me that article never qualifies the sql in parser.

Postgre sql parser, mysql sql parser, …

(Solid advise though)

earnestinger··on Testing Without Mocks: A Pattern Language (2023)
If I’m reading it right, proposal is to hand-roll the mocks/test-doubles and store them in production code. (In addition to how to structure the app)

While article is interesting and idea workable, the title seems a bit misleading.

(Including the “pattern language” part. I bet 90%of readers were expecting to see some kind of DSL)
