earnestinger··on Is the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS alien technology? [pdf]
It’s unknown.

It can equally be possible, impossible or not worth it.

Interstellar rocks crashing at you with velocity of 0.1c might hurt a lot.

I would not like my government spending 99% of everybodies income for 100 generations, just to send one human to proxima centauri.

Growth and efficiency gains are not guaranteed, and will eventually stop. (If you take the mass of universe, put it into mc^2, and assume 5% energy consumption increase per year you get 2k years to consume whole universe worth of energy)

We can’t just assume that humans will reach Proxima Centauri.

To solve the issue we must answer several questions: What’s the alternative? How much it would cost for whole class and members of classmate families?
earnestinger··on PHP: The Toyota Corolla of programming
Yup. Java 1.8 is humongous leap to the right direction.
earnestinger··on Twenty Eighth International Obfuscated C Code Contest
I’m stll waiting for the revival of the cousin, underhanded c contest.
earnestinger··on The Dollar Is Dead
Why court system is relevant for the currency?

I assume British courts can enforce contracts that deal in dollars.

earnestinger··on AI is killing the web – can anything save it?
Eg. Some brand used in a movie.

Usually brands pay for that screen time, but it’s not very obvious that it’s payed advertising.

Real men would dig Route 66 canal instead of Panama.
earnestinger··on Ask HN: Is it time to fork HN into AI/LLM and "Everything else/other?"
No idea. Read only is good enough.
earnestinger··on Code and Trust: Vibrators to Pacemakers
Reasons why:

Corporation does not care about life per se, it looks at impact on profit.

Corporation has option to sue offender into oblivion (by thoroughly writing contracts)

Parent is perfectly right.

I enjoy ice cream so damn all other opinions :)

earnestinger··on Private sector lost 33k jobs, badly missing expectations of 100k increase
Or more education.
earnestinger··on G7 agrees to exempt U.S. multinationals from global minimum tax
I think you are missing the forest for the trees.
earnestinger··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
I do understand that it was not the first first salvo.

And that blockading policy and financing of anything but fatah and bunch of other stuff influenced today situation.

But you must admit that oct 7 was unusual escalation. Which now are used as the reason for current idf actions.

If there is a lot of malnutrition, population numbers will change without migration.

> Once one side of a war becomes dominant, it just ends.

Sorry for being pedanto, but other side must stop resisting for war to end. Guerrilla warfare is quite usual when there is great power imbalance.

earnestinger··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
I think the parent meant there were no shooting before the genocide started. Jewish resistances were reactive to nazi actions.

I.e. there was not even a possibility that nazis were defending. While somebody from Palestine side did fire the opening salvo on oct7.

earnestinger··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
Not sure I get your point.

Try the same, but opposite argument.

Something like: Would you wear a t-shirt saying “Palestine is treated unfairly” to oct7 memorial or airport/border crossing?

earnestinger··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
> and that many people who express that sentiment wouldn't be expressing it if the powers were flipped

That is definitely not true.

Are you really of this opinion or are you trying to incite replies? :)
earnestinger··on Object personification in autism: This paper will be sad if you don't read (2018)
Link was used to establish that this concept is usually called “gender”. (I felt there was a dispute on that; might be my projection)

Regarding anecdotes:

In my native language all objects have grammatical gender (feminine and masculine).

If I would write a children book natively, about objects that come to life, I would automatically assign their social gender based on grammatical gender.

Because language hints it that way. Pronouns, adjectives, participles, all must be adjusted based on objects gender (exactly like it would be done when talking about a person).

earnestinger··on Object personification in autism: This paper will be sad if you don't read (2018)
Except for all the languages that actually call the grammatical concept: gender

Edit: see German example: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammatical_gender_in_German

earnestinger··on Object personification in autism: This paper will be sad if you don't read (2018)
Lot of languages assign gender to objects.

One should control for foreign language knowledge.

earnestinger··on It’s nearly impossible to buy an original Bob Ross painting (2021)
People who hold them, sued Bob Ross’s son for using “Ross” i.e. his last name.

Slimy people.

earnestinger··on Reflections on Sudoku, or the Impossibility of Systematizing Thought
My view of Uncle Bob is that his advise is attempt improve the average situation, even if taken literally as a gospell.

It’s better that everybody do route tdd, than no tests at all. It’s better to have all methods exactly 3 lines of code, than all methods being 3 pages long.

Uncle bob preaches better baseline, experience will teach all the nuance.

Disclaimer: I dont do tdd. But it’s nice method of work to know.

earnestinger··on The Illusion of Thinking: Strengths and limitations of reasoning models [pdf]
Let’s do that. Still, this hash table, would be doing reasoning?
earnestinger··on Curate your shell history
I bet it was “bash” (with sed and rsync)
earnestinger··on The Illusion of Thinking: Strengths and limitations of reasoning models [pdf]
Hypothetically.

Imagine a simple, but humongous hash table, that maps every possible prompt of 20000 letters to the most appropriate answer in current time.

(How? Let’s say outsourcing to east asia or aliens…)

Would you say such mechanism is doing reasoning?

earnestinger··on The Illusion of Thinking: Strengths and limitations of reasoning models [pdf]
On the other hand: nobody can formally refute that a stone is reasoning/thinking.

Lack of definition seems to be ideal substrate for marketing and hype.
