e2021··on Living Like It's 99, No Social Media, No Smartphone
he problem I have with getting rid of the smartphone is the camera - its so much better than a dedicated camera for its size, and once you have the camera its hard to resist using the apps.
e2021··on Is Apple Banning Free Analytics SDKs?
collecting the data isn't the problem, its the analysis thats annoying. ie. this only gets you so far:

> Small bootstrapped HTML page to view the stats, no pretty graphs or anything, just numbers.

Maybe I want to see the number of some custom event per week, ok, now show me number per session, then break it down by country etc etc. I guess you could export the data to some BI tool and create a bunch of reports, but that is a bit of a hassle, especially since in anything but a very small company the people who most want to do this analysis are going to be non-technical. Are you going to assign engineering resources to sit around making reports full time? Much easier to just use google which 1) has all this built in 2) people already know how to use

e2021··on Gallup: 81% of Black Americans Want Police to Retain Local Presence
From further down in the thread:

> Today I watched a police officer in kenosha wisconsin get knocked unconscious with a brick. The fellow police officers picked him up and dragged him away - while the crowd changed "Fuck the police" and recorded it.

The idea that the worst the protesters have done is throw apples at the police is so crazy I don't even know how you could be that deep in a bubble

e2021··on New academic journal only publishes 'unsurprising' research rejected by others
But isn't the reason they don't want to write it up because they know they won't get any credit for it? That is exactly what this is trying to remedy
e2021··on Remote work is reshaping San Francisco, as tech workers flee and rents fall
But the asking rent is down ~15% y/y all through peninsula, so I don't think this argument really holds up.
e2021··on How Did the Casio F91W Become a Terrorist Icon?
The watch never breaks, but the strap will break after 1-2 years of continuous wear, and its cheaper to get a whole new watch than a new strap.
e2021··on Wiki.js
The point isn’t to be cynical and say nothing works, it’s to look at what works over the long term (at least >2 years).

The only thing I’ve ever heard of working on this time scale is plain text files. Maybe with some tool over the top to make it easier to manage than just with an editor, but in the end just plain text.

e2021··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
They could have make >$10m With Elon’s account alone by manipulating the share price. A few 100k is nothing
e2021··on App suddenly crashing on startup due to FBSDKRestrictiveDataFilterManager.m
The android/iPhone thing isn’t on purpose, it’s an artifact of the organizational structure at WhatsApp
e2021··on Facebook fires employee for publicly scolding a colleague
Don’t see how this is relevant to an employee getting fired for harassment
e2021··on [dead]
> one of the things I'm doing is not calling the police on any black person I see committing a crime

Black people are not more likely to be killed in an arrest than white people. I understand that you can now be fired and kicked out of polite society for saying that, but that doesn't means its not true.

e2021··on What Facebook doesn’t understand about the Facebook walkout
But where does the contrary position go, if you follow it through to the end? Say you delete the presidents post, so he goes and says the same thing at a press conference, do you now delete all the posts from news networks carrying his remarks? Deplatforming the president of the united states is just not a thing that is physically possible.
e2021··on What Facebook doesn’t understand about the Facebook walkout
I wish twitter hadn't opened this whole can of worms. I thought their previous policy of basically saying 'yes, different rules do apply to the president, so we're just not going to delete his posts' was pretty good.
e2021··on Folding-markdown: Adds header folding for Markdown files in Atom
Atom is already effectively discontinued, no more eng happening from what I heard.
e2021··on SpaceX NASA returning human spaceflight to United States today (canceled)
> it's going to be an order of magnitude cheaper

Soyuz is $60m per passenger I think? Are they saying dragon would be $6m per passenger per launch? I find that hard to believe...

e2021··on Economic Growth Is Incompatible with Biodiversity Conservation
That literally is the premise of the article though - economic growth is impossible without environmental damage
e2021··on YouTube bans coronavirus-related content that directly contradicts WHO advice
"The WHO is just as trustworthy as Trump" doesn't really seem like a big vote of confidence for the organization. This comeback only makes sense if everything is a purely partisan divide and anyone who is against WHO must be pro-trump.
e2021··on YouTube bans coronavirus-related content that directly contradicts WHO advice
> They were urging nations to act for months before they actually did.

No, they were telling governments for months not to put in place travel bans and not to recommend facemasks. The countries that had the most effective responses are the ones that ignored or literally did the opposite of WHO recommendations.

e2021··on YouTube bans coronavirus-related content that directly contradicts WHO advice
It also comes from the Absurdly laudatory praise that WHO was giving China in January about how they were setting standards for transparency and how their quick behavior had saved the world.
e2021··on Coronavirus and Credibility
De Blasio was telling people you couldn't get the virus on the subway and other nonsense well into March.
e2021··on Coronavirus and Credibility
WHO was saying almost until the point that China locked down that there was no evidence of human to human transmission, even though Taiwan has warned them that had strong evidence of this on December 31st 2019.
e2021··on Mozilla’s 18-month effort to market without Facebook
Yes, but the point op seemed to be making was that FB inc was in trouble because now instagram is the #1 choice instead of Facebook. This makes no sense - it all goes to the same bank account
e2021··on Mozilla’s 18-month effort to market without Facebook
You know FB owns Instagram though right? Why do they care if you spend money there or on FB proper?
e2021··on Amazon LightSail: Simple Virtual Private Servers on AWS
Digital ocean have servers in Singapore for the same price as all their other ones. The latency from Perth is about 40ms from memory.
e2021··on Decades-Old Mystery Put to Rest: Why Are There X's in the Desert?
Looks like a tailings dam to me, containing waste materials from the mine after processing. The solution has partially evaporated leaving a salt residue.

At least thats what it looks like to me. I don't think its a raised pyramid like the other reply says, pretty sure it is a hole.

If you do a google image search for 'tailings dam' you see some things that look pretty similar...
