Metaverse was a flop maybe, but meta makes something like $1 billion a week from its mobile apps, it'd be crazy to say that is not successful.

I don't think thats true. If you'd only ever played Doom, I think you could play, say, counterstrike or half-life and be pretty good at it, and i think Carmack is right that its pretty interesting that this doesn't seem to be the case for ai models

We actually released an app for WP7 and then just as the platform was starting to get traction, they released WP8, made it backwards incompatible and told everyone to rewrite their apps. It killed the platform overnight. Maybe you can get companies to take a chance on a new platform once, but you can't then deprecate every device and app a year later and expect everyone to do the same thing again

Fogbugz just got outcompeted by JIRA imo, and without the cross compiling that allowed it to run on linux (instead of just windows server) it would have been dead long long before.

You can run stable diffusion on a MBP and produce images in under a minute. It's training these models that takes the crazy GPU power - running them is quite reasonable.

Here is a rule of thumb for this type of thing:

Good question, and I don't know the answer, because I've never seen the alternatives. In WP anyone can create a group, and make it private, so you can just make a private group for a bunch of engineers to work on some project with no pressure to be 'performative' for the rest of the company. Basically its a replacement for email distribution lists, but with many advantages over plain email.

One of the things I miss working at Facebook is the internal FB (called Workplace). It basically replaced email for the whole company, and worked really well for long form posts where maybe you would write some proposal up or make an announcement and get a bunch of comments. I now work at a slack centric company, and it just doesn't compare - there is no 'newsfeed', so unless you remember to check all the channels, you end up missing stuff. You can send out a group email, but people are reluctant to reply-all, so this doesn't get good discussion either.

As others have said, I don't find these arguments very convincing - if castles were mainly residences, then why have crenelations, or arrow slits or a moat, doesn't that argument apply equally to those? The argument that if such a defensive feature was needed, then its already too late, and so it was probably never used is also not a good one imo. Has the CWIS gun on aircraft carriers ever actually been used in combat? Am I to conclude that CWIS has no defensive use and is purely architectural ornamentation?

The only good point is that it wasn't mentioned by contemporary sources, but I don't think this proves anything unless you can show that other defensive features on castles were mentioned. Otherwise maybe we just have bad sources about castle design. But if you can show me some documents about why eg. moats are designed they way they are, then I think you have a point.

Only about a 30 - 40% are actually false (eg. "No EU plan to ban Union Flag from British meat packs"), the majority are true, and the "debunking" takes the form of explaining why it's a good thing (eg. "EC plan to ban noisy toys", " EU to ban powerful vaccuum cleaners"), or there are no facts involved at all and they try to debunk someones opinion ("EU does not favour criminals over victims").

Also popular is distinction without a difference. The classic banana myth is one of these - No they don't ban vegetables with the wrong dimensions, they just put them in a lower quality class that no supermarkets will buy.

I did this in 2012 from Australia to South Korea - theres a bunch of specialized travel agencies you can book through. From memory it took about 10 days.

The cost was about $100 / day, but this was almost 10 years ago, so I guess it went up by now. This isn't really competitive as travel, but if you consider the experience of being on a container ship a holiday in itself, the cost was quite reasonable IMO.

There was one other passenger on board, and we could go anywhere on the ship without an escort except the engine room. I really enjoyed it, but its not for everyone as there is no communication / internet access available so you have to be the sort of person who can entertain yourself.

Also wouldn't go if you get seasick easily. Unlike say cruise ships, the crew isn't too worried about passenger comfort, and wil just plow straight through storms.
