I do all world updates overnight for this very reason. But on my R5 3600, the longest emerge is, by far, qtwebengine, which takes just under 1.5 hours. Plus, Gentoo provides -bin versions of many packages notorious for protracted build times, such as Rust, Chromium, Firefox, etc...

I would imagine that automation plays a role. And maybe car manufacturers can exercise more control over assembly lines, and don't have to worry about unforeseen environmental factors. Of course, that is just a guess, I don't know enough about construction or car manufacturing to really say.

I have always used Pass [1], and while it is certainly less convenient, it doesn't really take too much extra effort to self host your passwords in a PGP encrypted git repo. Self hosting has drawbacks of its own, of course.

That this was the work of an otherwise uninvolved opportunist is always a possibility (it came to mind while considering that the document was from Feb 10, unmarked, and had been stapled), but I am almost certain it was not done for financial gain. Maybe I am naive, but I do not think news organizations pay their confidential sources very much for their trouble. So it just seems unlikely in this case.

Maybe some kind of grace period could be implemented that would allow changes like this to be undone within 24 hours or something.

I use qutebrowser[0] which is built on qtwebengine, which is based on Chromium but comes with the caveat that it will likely be blacklisted by Google since it does not follow upstream's release schedule. But it is trivial to get around this by setting the user agent to something not blacklisted.

Gmail [0] ignores dots in your email handle and so you could use a different pattern of dots for each website you register at and record it in a spreadsheet or something. The first and last characters cannot be dots, and I do not think you can have two or more dots in a row, but there is no limit to how many "legal" dots you can use. Not as elegant, but definitely doable.

I can't access the article to read it, but according to the USDC[0] page on the Coinbase website:

I can't imagine that the family of the victim would experience any "justice" from the mass consumption of their grief and pain for entertainment.

I am not sure if it is that simple, and I think companies have little choice but to be greedy, because if they choose not to be greedy, another greedier company is all but guaranteed to prevail. I suppose it could be argued that companies the size of Apple and Google are not bound by the same constraints as smaller companies. But if they choose to stop doing business in Pakistan, what would become of all of their existing customers? What about all the people who would be deprived of Apple and Google products/services?

When you discover something like this on a nationally syndicated talk show, it is probably too late for you to get in on the action.

You might be able to find some advice/inspiration on the r/DataHoarder subreddit [0]. They also have an IRC channel (#DataHoarder on freenode [1]). The IRC channel is a little more informal, but the subreddit has tons of great info and discussions on not just storing data, but also digitization and organizing/cataloguing data.

Maybe the private keys were behind an encryption scheme that took roughly seven years to be cracked with brute force. I can't say I envy the owner(s) of these coins. Maybe a billion dollars worth of closely watched bitcoins it is a good problem though. Who knows? I certainly don't.

In that respect the Time Minders from the computer game Anachronox are like photons. If you've never played the game, Time Minders were creatures that experienced all time simultaneously. As such, they were found scattered around the levels and could be used by the player to "freeze" a moment in time. In other words, they were the mechanism by which the player could save her game. If I recall correctly, playing with an easier difficulty setting allowed the player to save the game at any time via the menu.

I wonder why Google didn't include a "cleanup" routine that empties the shopping cart after the data is collected. It seems like it would be a trivial thing to do, unless I am missing something. I guess the answer is because it would not benefit them in any way.

Even if you do compile your kernel, it really doesn't take that long on modern hardware. I just set up Gentoo on my main computer and the kernel literally took five minutes to compile on an 8 core AMD FX-8300 with 12GB of RAM. I spent much more time configuring it, of course :-)

The library function is my biggest gripe about calibre. It makes you copy all of your ebooks into a new directory if you want to use it.
