dylanz··on Show HN: Text a photo to send as a postcard
I’m assuming it’s so once you have that number in your contacts, you can just text photos to that number anytime without having to go to a website.
dylanz··on Palantir CEO Rejects Calls to Pause AI Development
"Comments should get more thoughtful and substantive, not less, as a topic gets more divisive." and "Please don't post shallow dismissals, especially of other people's work. A good critical comment teaches us something."
dylanz··on Show HN: HelpHub – GPT chatbot for any site
Congrats on the launch! How does this differ from something like Fin from Intercom? https://www.intercom.com/fin
dylanz··on Eggspensive
I read somewhere that you can manipulate the yolk color through different types of feed, but I'm not sure if that's true or not. I used to raise a bunch of hens and yeah... nothing beats eggs from healthy ones. I "did" however get sick of eggs for a while... they're almost too productive! I finally built a network of neighbors who were gladly willing to take them off my hands.

dylanz··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
I’m pretty sure it has to do with genetics. I asked my dentist friend and he confirmed. The only reason I was interested in this is because a friend of mine in his 40’s has absolutely perfect teeth and has never flossed once. His teeth are insanely white and clean. I’m extremely envious! I have to floss twice daily. I assume it’s a bacteria thing? I have no idea.
dylanz··on Rails on Docker
If you could share your configurations that would be great! (see email in my profile). I used Capistrano for many, many, years but haven't kept up with it in quite a while. I've had to tackle HIPAA deployments in k8s and it's quite the ordeal for a small team. I miss the days of "cap deploy".
dylanz··on Ask HN: What Recession?
A recession is complicated and may not be highly coupled to a specific field of employment.
dylanz··on iOS Ships Dvorak, Finally
This is great for people who use an external keyboard with an iOS device.

dylanz··on A History of Salt Cod (2019)
I highly recommend the book “Cod” by Mark Kurlansky. It’s a very easy read. “Salt” by the same author is also fantastic.
dylanz··on Oracle Suspended My Account
I pay $50/mo for basic GCP support and they’ve been fantastic thus far. That’s just my experience using it in the last few months.
dylanz··on Why Ruby Is More Readable Than Python
“ I didn't work hard to make Ruby perfect for everyone, because you feel differently from me. No language can be perfect for everyone. I tried to make Ruby perfect for me, but maybe it's not perfect for you. The perfect language for Guido van Rossum is probably Python.”

…

“I hope to see Ruby help every programmer in the world to be productive, and to enjoy programming, and to be happy. That is the primary purpose of Ruby language.”

- Yukihiro Matsimuto

dylanz··on Permaculture Magazine: Seeds (2014) [pdf]
He has some great videos and has done some very cool projects. I had the opportunity to study under him at his farm, and also under Bill in Melbourne.

dylanz··on “Cell Tower” Word Game
Can letters just exist by themselves? In todays game there was a lingering “A” and an “E”.
dylanz··on The state finally letting teens sleep in
Lights off at 9pm? That’s not how most teenagers work. I used to read until midnight most nights.
dylanz··on Acoustic Keyboard Eavesdropping
It's somewhat similar to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Eck_phreaking that's featured in Cryptonomicon.
dylanz··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
I've done periods of time on OMAD throughout my life and one thing that would always get me is sleep. I'd wake up (not necessarily hungry) much too early, regardless of the time of my one meal. One trick that helped me was to break OMAD, and have a little bit of a slow releasing protein in the evenings before bed. My go to was low fat cottage cheese. Once I added that I was able to sleep through the night again.
dylanz··on Postgres Auditing in 150 lines of SQL
I’d +1 the usage of pgAudit when higher throughput is needed. If you’re on AWS, RDS can automatically ship these logs to S3 where you can then run Athena queries against them.
dylanz··on J. Kenji López-Alt says you’re cooking just fine
This list is awesome. Thanks for posting it!
dylanz··on J. Kenji López-Alt says you’re cooking just fine
I’ve been watching Kenji’s YouTube channel for quite a while and it’s one of my favorite channels. One of his favorite chefs is Jacque Pepin (and mine!) and it shows. He’s not pretentious, mellow, substitutes ingredients the recipe calls for with ingredients he actually has in his house, and geeks out on history and science. Lastly his dogs are pretty darn cute and get to taste some great dishes.
dylanz··on White hat hacker awarded $2M for fixing ETH-creation bug
I remember walking down the main street in my hometown on my way to drink at a bar and seeing saurik and some friends at a bars all with their laptops out and hacking on something. What caught my eye was a terminal open and a Vim session. I walked up and we all chatted for a bit. Back in the day you didn't run into that very often where we lived so it was pretty cool to see. That boosted my conviction for my choice of IDE and I started bringing my laptop out to the bars in the evenings as well. Years later my friend and I built a business and pretty much all the code was written in the evenings at one of those bars. You can be social and code at the same time it turns out, and coding prevented me from drinking too much while I was out. No real morale to the story, just an anecdote I wanted to share. That said, congrats on the bounty saurik!

dylanz··on US Special Operations Command picks Anduril to lead counter-drone in $1B deal
Karp would love that. He’s a huge back country skier.
dylanz··on How big was the Tonga eruption?
Takaka or Motueka? I used to live in that area. Golden Bay has a pretty unique geographical layout!
dylanz··on Examining the covidtests.gov architecture
It definitely looks like USWDS, which happens to have accessibility well baked in.
dylanz··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage

dylanz··on Kintsugi – Art of Repair
Those are both great tips! I bought a trash can (a Nordic brand) recently and it did have holes in the bottom. I actually noticed how easy it was to pull the bag out. No suction. In regard to salt, I recommend getting a salt pig! I just got one recently. If you cook a lot the ease of access is great.
dylanz··on Ikea Vindriktning Air Quality Sensor Review and Accuracy
Someone referred me to https://oransi.com/ and I purchased one of the large EJ120 models. I've had it running for a few days and my place no longer has a smell and the air just feels clean. It's bizarre.
